D2X-XL Updating
« on: August 02, 2011, 08:37:51 PM »
I updated to 1.15.248, or so I thought, by downloading the 7z file "d2x-xl-src-1.15.248.7z"  by extracting it in 7-Zip to my Descent2 folder where ALL my other data is, yet when I go play, menu still reads 1.15.124... Am I doing something wrong?

The "...src..." file contains the source code. You want the executable installer. The best way to update on MS Windows is to use D2X-XL's built-in updater (see the main menu).

When I do the one in the main menu, it says "download failed" every time. It did it in January, it did it last night, and it did it 6 sec. ago.

Go to http://www.descent2.de/, go to "downloads" in the sidemenu, and download the "32 and 64 bit self-extracting archive" from the page.  Then run the exe and follow the instructions.

This is if you're on Windows.  If you're not, I think the updating is a little more complicated and I'm not exactly sure about it.

Apparently, on Linux curl wasn't fast enough to actually close the download's destination file when D2X-XL tried to read it, so you always got a download failure. I have added a download progress bar now and in the course of that have stumbled over that problem too and have fixed it.

If you're on Windows (Vista or 7) and the download fails, you may have installed D2X-XL in the program files or program files (x86) folder, where D2X-XL may not have write access.

So what was it - access rights or curl problem?

This is basically a "note to self" since I keep forgetting how to update D2X-XL...

Okay, dummy! click HERE: http://www.descent2.de/d2x.html#downloads and scroll down until you see where it says "D2X-XL Releases." Then click the link that says: "32 & 64 Bits (self extracting archive)."

Edit: THE ONE NEXT TO THE WINDOWS LOGO!!!
