Questions on OOF editor...
« on: November 16, 2010, 01:19:54 AM »
Hello there,

I have a problem with OOFeditor, it doesn't seem to work under Windows 7. Everytime I start the app, it returns an error message. (Attachment)

It's not a major problem for now, but I prefer to have it on in a complex project, so I'm searching for suggestions...

Any ideas?

Did you try to start OOF Editor as admin too?

Yeah, no effect...

EDIT: By the way, I forgot to add, I'm running on Windows-7 Home Premium-64Bit.

Also, I've tried several times to uninstal-reinstall, and received an error message about some *.dll files missing/unable to register. I've downloaded them thru the net, and placed them in system32 folder, AND the installation folder; yet no response again...

When a .dll doesn't register, it's typically a permissions issue during installation.  I'd bet that's the source of the issue.

Try this:

Uninstall, then run the installer as administrator.  Let us know if that works.

I'm sorry, but neither running the installer nor the OOFeditor itself as admin worked... It's still negative.

Yet thanks anyways, Foil and Atan...

I've backed up my OOF editor from my previous computer (WinXP) and transfered it to my current and I had no problems (by running as admin), so your best bet is to use VirtualBox (or any Virtual Machines) and if you still have the WinXP disk, it's your lucky day to install it within Virtual Box.
You can find it here:
http://www.virtualbox.org/

as for transfering it to Win7 from XP, try installing OOF editor within the VirtualBox (winXP), then put the OOF editor folder (e.g. C:\Program Files\OOF Editor) into a USB drive (if you have it) and close Virtual Box and open your USB drive directory and copy the OOF Editor folder into like C:\
then run it as Admin and there, you're good to go.

(I did the same on Haxmedit (but I installed it to my Laptop (winXP) and transfer the DMTOOLS folder to my desktop via USB drive)

Well thanks but there is a slight problem here... As I understand, I need a LEGAL Guest OS to use VirtualBox? My system came with Vista 64bit, and I recently uppgraded it to 7. I never had an XP disc for the whole time, and I don't have my old ones anymore... :( And if I had used Vista instead, the problem with OOFEditor would not be corrected either...

Are there any alternatives to OOFEditor? I had the Dateiliste's package, and it included something called "D3Tool". It looks like it can Import ORF's and Export them as OOF's, but there is no animation sequence in it... Or not that I knew... Also I once heard something called "alOOf", which may be a little more close to OOFEditor...

I've been using OOFEditor, and it felt more easy-to-use... yet its not working now and I need an alternative, if all else fails...

I made a test running OOFEditor under W7-64. I couldn't start it at all too.
I tried some 'tricks' I found about registering that ocx on this system but none did work for me.
for example: I copied the ocx file into C:\Windows\system32 and tried ->
regserv32 C:\Windows\system32\COMCTL32.OCX (sure as admin) but it gave me an error message.

Maybe you should ask SuperSheep about that problem.

If you search an other tool try the one from this site:
http://descent.aldel.com

It's not that handy as OOFEdit and it's not really finished. So you must find out if this works.
May be there are other tools outside, but I don't know.

Thanks Atan!

I got alOOF from there, and I'll check it tomorrow...

If all else fails, I can simply ask someone with a working converter to convert my ORF's to OOF's right? :D

I'll go digging some mines for you guys, I see not much new stuff?
See ya in mines,

A single-player&co-op, for starters... I'll let you know after some development, I'm playing with masses right now :D

I've checked the alOOF. It works, but I can't seem to have it read the table.gam... even I input the file location in settings... But whatever, it WORKS, nuff' said!

@Shroudeye (or maybe some others)

It's late, but I found a workaround to see the textures inside alOOF now.
I extracted all textures from the D3hog (mn3) and all my custom textures too into a new folder
and pointed inside Gloabal Settings -> General the file Path to that folder.
Hope this helps.

Sorry for late posting as well, my school just entered a break after a hectic term...

Thanks  a lot Atan, I'll check it out and let you guys know shortly...

EDIT: Sorry, it didn't worked on me somehow... I'm writing the file path I used below for you to check:

"E:\Program Files (x86)\Descent 3\Editor\extracted\"

I extracted everything into the "extracted" folder...

Hard to say what's wrong.
Did you close aloof and tried again?
Are you sure that your ogf/oaf files are extracted?
Possible you do not own the rights to let aloof handle with your folder. Did you get any error messages?
My path is -> D:\Descent3\D3_alles_entpackt\OGF which is outside any 'system folder' like Program Files.
As you could see by that smart missile example, it's working.
