It's an awesome discovery. With that, they can build a dome, extract breathable air and fuel from the water and  grow food. All we need is money.

So let me get this straight ...

1. They have detected the presence of water (in the form of ice?) at the Moon.

We also know that ... (I'm extrapolating a little)

2. Many of the objects drifting around in space (rocks, debris, comets, asteroids, etc.) have ice (and/or water) on or in them due partly to where they came from and/or things they've encountered in their travels.

3. The Moon experiences a lot of impacts with space going objects and has done so for a very, very long time.

So ...
Shouldn't it be almost expected for us to detect the presence of water or ice at the Moon?

Am I putting too much thought into this?

Should I see if MegaVolt can shock me with something?

No, but read the article, your questions are answered. Keep in mind, the scientists involved have put a lot of thought into this, but also remember the person who wrote the article is likely a journalist, not a scientist.

As I understand it, the scientists were fully expecting to find water on the moon, they just didn't expect how much they found. ;)

And of course, WillyP's got a point, too. The journalist who wrote it probably missed a few details. :)

Finding water on the moon doesn't surprise me, If they found Jimmy Hoffa, that would be a different story.  ::)

I have no clue who the heck Jimmy Hoffa is, but I'd be surprised to find him on the moon too. :P
