"Related" shows link to own thread
« on: February 05, 2012, 04:34:47 PM »
For some threads, there is a "Related" box above them with a link to the exact same thread you're already reading. There's no other links usually, although "Where to get descent missions" has multiple links to other topics.

Personally I find it rather unneeded and would've mind being able to turn it off, but at least it would be nice for it to not randomly show a link to the same thread. I think it's fairly obvious a thread is related to itself.

That's a good point.

Example 1: Where to get Descent Missions thread

Example 2:  Desktops 2012 thread

Example 1 shows a thread with multiple 'related' links cluttering the top of the thread while Example 2 shows a thread with only one 'related' link and it's to the same thread.

What I wish for:
1. 'related' links didn't include a link to the same thread.
2. 'related' links portion of the thread to be collapsible in the same way the "Recent" post and Shout Box side apps are.

Kind of a necro, but this thread shows an obnoxious 18 related threads:

Wow, imagine how annoying that will get in a few years when some threads rack up thousands of 'related' topics?

So what do you guys think... Is it worth investing some time into trying to refine this into a less obtusive way of categorizing topics, or should I can the whole idea?

If it can be less obtrusive, I say keep it.

Otherwise can it.

Maybe put it at the bottom and only show like 4, restricted to 1 line each (no multi-liners for long titles) with a link to "show all". I'd be just as happy without it though, tbh, it's really not very useful to me.

I just disabled it, there is no option to move it, and I don't feel ambitious enough to pursue a custom coded solution.

There is no option to remove the 'Related' section. I deleted all the tags, still doesn't remove it from the threads. So I guess any old topics that were tagged, are still tagged. Any new topics and any that haven't been tagged won't have the 'Related' section.
