I think things are stable enough that I can get another build out tomorrow or so. I haven't done many formal builds, for the most part I've just given people them when they asked, but having some new nice formal ones would be nice.

Just curious where to get the builds... the memory stick where I was keeping the working builds I had before has apparently vanished off the face of the Earth, and the build in the OP doesn't seem to have been updated since last year.
Github links are well and good but I don't have the ability or the know-how to compile a build myself -- and if you tried to guide me through it I'd definitely and repeatedly get it wrong XD  I can apparently never understand simple instructions :P

FS2 has a Linux build in the form of FSOPEN. You can get it by using the Knossos tool. If you can't compile it, you could always use the fall back FSO Installer which uses Java.

And yes, all the Descent games have Linux builds... even D3, though to be honest it's too buggy at the moment.

Descent 3 online was the best gaming experience I had. To my knowledge (which isn't much), Overload is the closest to Descent I can get my hands on. I don't have Windows, so that leaves out Freespace 2 on steam, and most other Descent games. Although, I think they may be on linux.

I have Overload because I have a PS4. Manticore - Galaxy on Fire is the best I can get with the FreeSpace feel, as yet, not really. It's better than Strike Vector in my opinion, but it still lacks wingmen, commands, attacking capital ships, defending, etc..
There is a little of it, but not on a grand scale.

Life definitely does get in the way at times. I went awol for a number of years from the community, mainly due to other interests and real life stuff. But I came back, a little late perhaps, and finished up some big projects in recent years. I'm glad I did, because they were gnawing at me for a long time, even if they diverged from original ideas. I love Descent (and Overload, Freespace etc) as a whole but D3 in particular is important to me because it helped me get through tough times when I was a teen. I hope it gets a decent source port one of these days, even a basic one to improve system support would be welcome. The Linux port is a start, but things are moving too slowly.

Huh. Looks like they were intended to be used as some sort of screen graphic, like maybe on a wall nearby to the hostage room. Hmm. Wonder why it didn't make the cut.

Well that was a mess, but it works now. For data files (mostly PIGs, HAMs, HOGs, MVLs, SXXs, and the like that are external), the game will now attempt to load the upper case filename, and failing that, will try a fully lowercased filename again. Things that are generated by the game are not affected by this ATM and must be named with the correct casing generated by the game (usually lowercase). I might look into imprvoing that later down the line.

I've done a lot of work on the PC TCRF pages, but I'm always interested to hear if there's anything I've missed.

At the moment I still have some sound related things I need to get to and trying to dig out the unused textures, but they're a bit annoying to do. I'd do more Descent 3 stuff, but tbh I really have no means to go about the data collection.

Edit: not long after, I discovered two unused "hostage" faces the source alluded to are present in the Descent 1 Mac PIG file. Woah. Check them out here
Descent Levels/ Mods / Re: Descent 3 Singleplayer Missions - LIST
« Last post by TechPro on April 19, 2020, 03:52:21 PM »
After being basically... "AWOL" from updating the list... I've added 4 (yes, four) single player levels to the Descent 3 Single player Missions List!

  • Basewars Redux (by Hunter)
  • Hyperspace: Silent Fury (by Hunter)
  • Omens: PTMC Vesta Covert Facility (by Hunter)
  • Omens: Resurgence (by Hunter)

I highly recommend all four.

whether you believe in the coronavirus or not

I was basically getting to is that people are affected one way or another.

There are those who deny it, but are angry because businesses are closed or (strongly) restricted due to a lie.
And there are those who go by it, have a lock down and not see friends and family.

No matter where one stands, it's rough. And to respect both sides. If people want to go for a walk, great. Get some fresh air. Some want to wear masks, no harm there.

And as for friends and family, at least we have phones, some have facebook, online chat/videos, etc..
And I think the worst is over. Again, whether we agree or even like Trump, he may be turning things around soon. It doesn't really make a lot of sense to just turn things around unless it's because summer is close, and a virus can't survive the summer heat. Maybe hospitals are getting quieter, less patients?

Anyway, I have some games on a few consoles, but for the past year or so, I too have been getting bored of games. I miss space battles SO MUCH.
Manticore Galaxy on Fire (Think that's it), isn't too bad. But it's still no Descent FreeSpace.
