Thanks for the links! There was one specifically for Overload as well, right? I think I remember seeing that during the Kickstarter campaign, but I never actually checked it out.

Relatively-centralized Discord server for Descent fans you say?

https://discord.gg/Wx3jpRH - I believe it’s called “r/Descent”

https://discord.gg/pYJGjHBRwY - called “6Hang - 6Dof Fun - D1, D2, D3, OL, Sol”

Both let you immediately join.  Both appear to have active users.

….. There ya go

*pokes head up out of the grave*

Still alive, though I'd all but forgotten this place was. With how the homepage looks I'm pleasantly surprised to see the forum still kicking. Looking back at my posts from when this place started around the demise of the original PD.com, and I genuinely don't remember most of the details. Getting old sucks.

If anyone stumbles across this, is there one relatively-centralized Discord server for the community, or are people spread out across a few different ones? It'd be nice to pop in and see who's still around.

I have been running this and … I am VERY impressed!!!

Smooth transitions (because it allows you to use your system’s resolution), and it does widescreen!!

Almost like playing a new game!  ; :D :D

Mess Hall / PiccuEngine for Descent 3

Following the source code release, an enterprising individual took it upon himself to modify and improve the game engine. PiccuEngine supports native high resolution including widescreen with proper scaling and correct cockpit display at higher frame rates. It also includes a new mouse mode and many bug fixes.

There's a few minor issues but it's enjoyable enough that I played through the entire Retribution campaign with no complaints, except that Squids don't render properly at certain angles, turning almost invisible.

Long time no post, I wound up here by a chance encounter with Kaiaatzal on a totally unrelated guitar-gear YouTube comment. It's a small world  ;D

This is awesome news! Would love to see widescreen support and controller support come out of this, particularly.

Actually booted up D3 the other day just to see if it would even start on Windows 11, and I was surprised to find that it not only worked but seemed rock solid for the hour or so that I played. But 1024x768 is a little long in the tooth, especially those of us with ultrawides  :P

You'll be happy to know someone developed a new game engine called PiccuEngine. Natively supports high resolution and improves mouse controls a bit. No controller support yet, and there's some minor texture/rendering issues, most notably on Squids, but it's enough of an improvement that I dusted off D3 and played through Retribution in the past couple weeks.

I'm still working at the same place I've been working for nearly 32 years ... which kind of sounds boring and redundant but thankfully the job seems to always be changing.  Getting to the point where retirement is coming into view.

I'll take boring. I got kicked to the curb last September after I turned 65. I was with that company for 13 years. It took me 6 months to land another job at half the pay, but I'm thankful I have one now.

I'm mostly just surviving at this point. Last year, I was hired as a full-time employee at the place I've been a contractor at for years, so that's definitely a plus (and the good health insurance came in handy when I got hospitalized for a little bit last May...paid 95% of that cost).

I'm in a few Descent based Discords (such as the one linked earlier in this thread), though I don't talk much in any of em. Shouldn't be hard to find me though :P.
