Title: "Judging by your age, I didn't think you knew."
Post by: VANGUARD on September 19, 2011, 09:02:24 AM
I'm going to try something different here. Someone at my job has used the reference "Cone of Silence" and didn't think I knew it. Well, I did, from "Get Smart". And I'm under 30.

This may be pointless, this may be fun. Just don't screw this up and get my topic locked like before (mad look; followed by some grin)

Anyways. Is there anything about you that may shock the average person, or just maybe have them say, "that's different."

I'm 29; (sorry Alieo) and here are some examples.

Talk to me about old shows, and I can tell you some of the episodes that I loved and hated. Honeymooners, Dick Van Dyke, Mary Tyler Moore, Get Smart, Hogans Heroes, Mash, Columbo, Quincy, list goes on.
Talk to me about new shows and I will be like, "..........what?" newest sitcom I saw was Monk, and older yet, Home Improvement. Know nothing about Mad about you, Seinfeild (spelling), Friends, Fraiser, etc..

I also like more classical music than I do new pop music.

I apologize if this is STUPID. It's Monday, I am TIRED, and feeling weird.

Have a nice day.

Rockford Files, Get Smart, MASH, Hogan's Heroes, All In The Family, Barney, Mayberry, and of course Star Trek. What was the cop show Barney was a spin off of? Welcome Back Cotter,

What was the name of the one with Darell and his brother Darell? Took place at the main characters house wich was a hotel or B&B, and the name of the actor was the name of the show. Oh I hate that it's on the tip of my ... nvm, got it, The Dick Van Dyke Show. Well, that one was more my Dad watching it and me being there. Back then kids would choose what to watch, except on Saturday morning.

Monty Python's Flying Circus, The Return Of Reginald Perrin, Faulty Towers, Benny Hill. And Doctor Who!

I think it's Welcome Back Kotter.

Oh yeah, Newhart. remember some of those, and even the Bob Newhart Show. Flying Circus, thought of them a day or two ago. Just saw Mr. Bean, but that's newer I think.
There was Barney Miller.

Barney Miller, right! And Fish was the spin-off. And you are right about the spelling of Kotter, too, and Bob Newhart was the one with the brothers who were all named Darell.

Oh wow!  That line-up brings back so many memories.  Thanks for the reminder (sometimes I forget we're not far apart in age).

Later on (in the 80's, after I graduated) there was Magnum P.I., A-Team, Airwolf, the Fall Guy, Hardcastle And McCormick, Growing Pains, Knight Rider, Quantum Leap, The Young Riders ...

After High school, and moving out on my own, I hardly watched TV at all, but I do remember watching Magnum PI. That Rockford files, was about it.

We used to turn on the TV with the sound off and listen to music and laugh about the TV, with a little help from some other stuff I won't mention  :o here.

Anyone know what movie this is from? Best line in the movie.

"Hai man."
"What are you doing?"
"I'm drinking wine and eating cheese n catching some rays, you know."
"What's happening?"
"Well the tank's broke and they're tryin ta fix it."
"Then why the hell aren't you up there helping them!?"
"Oh-ho man. I only ride em, I don't know what makes em work."
".......Oh cripes...." *walks away*
"Definitely an antisocial type. Woof, woof, woof, woof! That's my other dog imitation."

Kelly's Heroes (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0065938/) which starred Clint Eastwood, Telly Savalas, Don Rickles, Carroll O'Connor, Donald Sutherland and several others.  Great flick.

Kinda related: Most Emmy-winning shows of each decade, in delicious pie chart form - Robert David Sullivan (http://robertdavidsullivan.typepad.com/my_weblog/2011/09/most-emmy-winning-shows-of-each-decade-in-delicious-pie-chart-form.html)

Reading through some of the names of shows brings back a lot of memories. Can't beleive I missed 'I Love Lucy' and 'The Honeymooners'!

I think the only reason I can't really watch "I love Lucy" anymore is because it was played at our house A LOT; either on tv, or well, lol, on tv, but a VHS tape.

A lot of the old shows I watched as a kid, if I watch them now I just can't take it. I wonder why I watched them in the first place. Like Beverly Hillbillies. Or Gilligan's Island.

sometimes I wonder the same. some may still have some humor, but not like other shows I still see.

'insert thinking emoticon'
maybe that's why. I wasn't smart enough to know what really was funny at the time I guess.

You probably had a different concept of what was funny then.

I know I had a different concept of what was funny when I was a kid.

I remember watching Gilligan's Island and wondering where they sat the audience While filming the scenes because I could hear them laughing at the jokes. (canned laughter, who could tell?) LOL

Hey don't be hatin' on Gilligan's island...

No, it is pretty hard to hate Gilligan's Island.  ::) Just hard to relate to it today. TP, I know what you mean, sometimes my kids will laugh at stuff I can only shake my head at, and then not get some hilarious joke they should have easily understood. Life's experiences have a profound influence on one's sense of humor.

Oh, I'm a fraction of the age of some of you, but even I can relate to that. My siblings will be sitting around watching some cartoon that airs today and be rolling in laughter at their weak jokes while I'm just grimacing and thinking about how the cartoons I grew up with were ten times more entertaining all around.  ::)

I use to like Full House, years ago. A while back, I saw it and found 0 humor in it.
