Title: Gallery, Files, and Attachments
Post by: -<WillyP>- on June 25, 2011, 02:42:11 PM
Some files in the gallery have very long file names. The Gallery script then adds a bunch of letters and numbers to that. Unfortunately, I can't back up these files via ftp. So please keep the file names short! This would apply to any file you upload, though I haven't seen any excessively long file names except in the gallery.

How long can they be? I don't know! But this one is too long:
10 Industrial Accident Game10 Correlation Mix 2 by Random_McWinky.mp3
Which becomes:
1227_10_Industrial_Accident_Game10_Correlation_Mix_2_by_Random_McWinky_mp358881094adad1a7a4081c62eae56342d_extmp3

That is good information to know.

Can a banner or notice be placed to remind people to keep the names short?

I am going to ask for help coding a restriction on the length of the file name. So if you upload a file with a long name it will be rejected. Also SMF 2 is out and as soon as TP is ready we will upgrade, so this will do for now.

Can the banner or notice be moved to where you upload files instead of above the recent posts?

Later. After we upgrade to SMF 2.

Anyway, I have learned the restriction is in Windows, so for now I'll just move my back-up folder to a shorter path.

there's still spelling mistakes, like right below your username and above the 'home/forum/reactor'.... and secondly, I think in the forum page, on top of the categories.

when you log in, look above that menu, I see: "News: Before uploading files, please read this: Galley, Files, Attatchments"

Ok, I had that there in some themes and removed it, I guess I missed your theme.

it varies depending on theme?  ???

Yes at first I used the in-built news fader, it has to be activated for each theme, and some themes did not have it at all. Which is why I switched to this version.

/me is lacking ambition to fix code or themes seeing we are close to upgrading to SMF 2.0.

It's still there for me on Dusky 2

It is above the 'Recent' block. He is talking about the news fader, which appears above this section in Dusky 2.

Oops I just noticed this thread. As for my "correlation remix" files, just delete them when the update takes place. I'll re-upload them later with shorter file names.

I shouldn't need to delete them, but I use ftp to make a backup now and then. Then the ftp software chokes and I have to restart the backup.

I did find out it is a limitation of Windows, on my machine, and includes the full path. So I moved my back up folder to root and renamed it 'pd' so that gives me extra characters.

Hey, does the file uploader have a moderation queue? XMPlay just uploaded, but looks like it's still stuck in the queue.

There is nothing in the moderation queue, and you should not have to have items approved. I would suggest deleting it and trying again.

Edit:
What is the file extension?
'zip, rar, doc, jpg, gif, png, rpm,gz,bin, hqx, pdf' are allowed in the files section.
'txt, rtf, pdf, xls, doc, ppt, docx, xlsx, pptx, xml, html, htm, php, css, js, zip, rar, ace, arj, 7z, gz, tar, tgz, bz, bzip2, sit' are allowed in the media gallery.

Are you sure the file is not infected with anything?  When I downloaded it from the link you gave me Firefox deleted it after scanning for viruses.  Either it was mistaken for a virus, or maybe it got a virus from your system?

If the file system here scans for viruses it may have quarantined it for the same reason.  Try to get a fresh copy of the file and then re-upload that -- before doing anything to it on your computer.  (And if it works you may want to do a complete antivirus scan).

Wait, you mean firefox's virus scan actually works?
Title: Re: Gallery, Files, and Attachments
Post by: Sidhe Priest on November 09, 2011, 10:33:17 AM
Firefox doesn't have a virus scanner. It lies about "checking for viruses", in reality it's just renaming the file from filename.ext.part. The file must be clean, an antivirus could've gone crazy about a packer or somesuch.

Here on PD it was uploaded as XMPlay.zip.

According to my quick googling, firefox is actually trying to get interface with your installed AV to have it check the file.

Which is moot when there isn't any... Might as well not show the message.

I don't know about you but I always run an antivirus, making it not moot... My point is it's doing more than just renaming the file.
Title: Re: Gallery, Files, and Attachments

When there's no antivirus, it only renames the file.

NOD32 says the file is clean. It's just XMPlay from Un4seen packed with Inno Setup. There's nothing there that could be infected.

When I downloaded it from the link you gave me Firefox deleted it after scanning for viruses.  Either it was mistaken for a virus, or maybe it got a virus from your system?

...or it was a Firefox or antivirus quirk, which is more likely.

Here it is: XMPlay 3.6 Player (http://www.planetdescent.net/index.php?action=tpmod;dl=item207)

Anyway, XMPlay is a nice little player that works with Ogg files. Bucketloads of features and multiple format support in a 2-MB package. It's also packed with BASSMIDI plugin, so it should work "out of the box" for playing MIDI files (with a Soundfont bank, of course).

When there's no antivirus, it only renames the file.
Technically, it attempts to find an antivirus, then renames the file.

When there's no antivirus, it just lies about "scanning for viruses". And only renames the file. It doesn't say "trying to connect with an antivirus". It only lies about scanning.

OK guys.  Let's move on.  10 posts about the "scanning for viruses" message that Firefox displays when it completes downloading a file ... is sufficient.

I think it's pretty well established that Firefox displays the "scanning for viruses" even when your Firefox doesn't have a plug-in for virus scanning.  (perhaps the programmer was lazy)  ???

There.  Let's move on.

Sidhe Priest has successfully uploaded the file to PD.net and it is available  right here (http://www.planetdescent.net/index.php/topic,916.msg13344.html#msg13344).  Enjoy!

Try it out, it's a very nice player. There're Ogg files, but there was no Ogg player. Now there it is.

Seems pretty nice.

Ah, I should mention that Foobar (http://www.foobar2000.org/) (which has been around for some time) also plays Ogg files (it's what I've used for years).

However, this XMPlay installer is specially setup specifically for PD.  Can't beat that.  :D

Yes, I am a Foobar loyalist too.
But I am checking this out.  I like the midi player.  Now if only I could figure out how to get soundfonts to work reliably.

It's the very same BASSMIDI lib. It loads instruments on demand, instead of preloading them. Hence the delay and lost notes. Works OK in render mode though, with wave writer output.

I believe you have to reach a certain number of posts before you can upload.  That is a security measure to protect all of us.
