Title: Playing ogg files in the gallery with Firefox.
Post by: -<WillyP>- on January 23, 2011, 12:46:04 PM
In the gallery, there are a number of .ogg files uploaded, for example: 33 Revelation (http://www.planetdescent.net/index.php?action=mgallery;sa=item;id=356).

I cannot use the player in Firefox.  I can download them and play them in VLC, or I can use the player in Chrome. But for some reason they will not play in Firefox.  It seems to be loading, but never loads or plays.

I have looked at Mozilla plug-ins site but there does not seem to anthying related to playing .ogg.

Also, I never installed Microsoft Media Player 11 after the last time I formatted and re-installed Windows XP.  I have Foobar 2000 and VLC players.  I don't want to install MS Media player, do I need to?

Foobar2000 should be able to play them, it's what I use.
And I need to get Revelation onto my D3 Anarchy playlist :D.
They won't play with Firefox (same problem), and I doubt IE will play them either, seeing as microsoft does not support ogg format... as such microsoft media player would likely be a waste of time too.
In any case, these files are there so that they can be downloaded, I think Alieo posted most of them as mp3 in another album to be listened to.

Ok, I would have liked to play them without downloading them, as I wouldn't likely play them again.  Guess I could always just use Chrome, though.  Thanks for confirming FF won't play them.  Seems odd there is not a plug-in for it.

Check if any of your media players provide a browser plugin, some might. WMP can play OGGs, just not by default. You need to get a codec for it, xiph.org provides them and some codec packs will provide them.

thats odd. I can play that track just fine using Firefox. I'm on linux, not sure if that is the reason or not. I have firefox 3.0.8.

Linux (compared to Windows) may be the reason... as I said microsoft doesn't support ogg format by default... I'm not sure how Firefox installs but if it takes the codecs from the operating system then that may be the reason.  It seems likely that linux would support it (being free it would be likely to support other free stuff... I guess).

This is just what came to mind, I have no idea if I'm correct.

it could be. I got a tom tom for Christmas, and each OS I tried it with, to get the maps back on (somehow it got deleted during the "install a voice on tom tom", reacted differently.

Linux, no go.
Mac, detected, got the voice on the tom tom, but the map got removed
windows, recovered map.

I think each is just slightly different.

Come to think of it, there was something about a Firefox plugin when I installed the VLC player... but I don't see anything applicable in FF.

As far a s windows being compatible with ogg, I can play ogg with Chrome, and VLC.  So I do have the right codecs, FF is not finding them, or maybe not even looking, I don't know.
