Title: Where have all the good posters gone?
Post by: TechPro on January 17, 2011, 09:51:19 AM
Today, when I flipped on my computer before I rolled out of bed or had opened my eyes ... I was expecting to see the wonderful plethora of new postings that had become common place on PD.net just after everyone was asked to change their display names... only to find there hadn't been a single post for (dare I imagine it) two whole days!  :o

Had something gone wrong?  Had PD.net suffered some sort of error like what DescentBB.net (http://www.descentbb.net) had recently seen?  Was there something (heaven forbid) wrong with 'my precious' (my computer)? What had happened?

Puzzled (and a bit concerned), I decided it was best to wake up my brain before proceeding (it was, after all, morning now).  Three hours later, I sat down to investigate and found WillyP had been on and had posted.  Whew!  What a relief, PD.net was a-OK and life is good.

So I'm wondering.  What have all of you been doing this weekend?

Here in the States (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States), to (Jan. 17, 2011) is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martin_Luther_King,_Jr._Day) which is also called Civil Rights Day.  Observed on the Monday nearest Jan. 15 (b-day for Martin Luther King, Jr.), this particular Monday is a national holiday for us which means government offices are closed, no postal mail delivery, many city services are closed, schools are closed (including the school where I work), and a number of businesses are closed. Meanwhile there are sales, activities, travel, visits, etc that people participate in over this extra long weekend.

We had a bunch of snow arrive on Thursday and Friday which made for a lot of shoveling, but was well enjoyed by my daughter and one of her friends on Saturday, while one of her brothers was on a campout at a cabin where they enjoyed a bunch of cross-country skiing.  I enjoyed my 4x4 truck Thursday and Friday because I could go anywhere while everyone else was getting stuck.  I even had to pull my Wife's van out of a snow bank.  So naturally, I was all about staying inside on Saturday where I spent most of my time working on a friend's ailing computer, then spent some time upgrading the video in one of our computers (which, of course, required a couple hours 'testing' afterward).

Our Sunday was constant haze and drizzle trying (vainly) to melt the snow which only succeeded in making the roads 'soupy' and aided in melting the small amount of snow not already cleared off the walks ... which was actually kind of nice because the sky has cleared this morning, and despite a bit of winter breeze, is actually quite nice ... and the walks don't need clearing.  With a few feet of snow everywhere ... there may be some fun to have.  ;)

I have this sad sinking feeling it's a personal thing with me. I posted in some places with no replies  :'(

Okay, I'm sort of being sarcastic, but in all honesty, I was thinking about the same, no one posting or replying to anything for a good day or two.

well, since "no one" was replying to my posts  ;D, I thought I'd just keep busy over the weekend and get some music on my cell phone, and burn some songs on a CD, get more paper, etc..

I don't know where you reside, but I imagine almost every state got some snow. I love 4x4 trucks. I have a F250 Ford myself. It was my fathers, but as you know, he passed away. He wanted me to have it while he was in the hospital.

Eh, sorry. I've been fairly busy myself, even on this long weekend; Saturday was a long work day for me, 8AM to 4PM, so you can imagine that after an 8 hour day on a busy Saturday, i was pretty tired. Yesterday was spent with my girlfriend, and it was a lovely day. Today though, I've got a chance to post, so here it is!

I can bet you guys know that I don't really post that often as it is, so I'm sorry about that. I'm content with reading, and I don't always have an opinion to voice over some subjects. :P

/me flies in for a fly-by posting ...

I've actually been out of contact for a while.  Just back to the sites.

I heard that every state (including Hawaii) had snow ... except Florida.

about not posting much, either your avatar means something different than what I think it is, or you're being sarcastic somewhere :)

I didn't post much of anything on here for a little while. months have gone by, but now work is slow, and i tend to check here and other sites from time to time.

Y'all can keep your snow. I'm juuust fine! I live in Houston and it's a FRIDGID 53 degrees. It needs to hurry up and be 105 already. This is ridiculous!  :P

No... seriously.

ROFL. I love hearing others, like down south complain about the cold. 53? wow. I wish it was that warm.
This past week, in the morning, it's been around 15 or so degrees. I'm waiting for the following week or so. They say it will be around 25 more often, which is that temperature now, but I hear it will drop soon again before it goes up.
a week or two ago, it was -3 degrees at 7:00 am.

I'm just having fun with you. I hear this on the weather channel as well.

"And down in Florida, oh my, is it cold, roughly 50 degrees. and up here in Minnesota (reason I say Minnesota is because I am in Minnesota), it's around 20 degrees, may get a little closer tomorrow, 15 possibly."

I understand why they say it. Cold to them is not cold to us. But still, it's funny to hear.

LOL! It's all good man. But hey when summer comes, and it hits the upper 90s, y'all are probably the ones complaining then huh? hehehe

20 degrees? Try 10.

Try ten below. I think we hit that here a few days back, if not colder. I'm not one hundred percent sure on that, but it was pretty dang cold, so it was definitely way below zero.

To me, though, it's all just cold, so I dress warmly and that solves the issue. :P

I love it when people from down in the warmer south find their way up here in time for the winter (which, with a college nearby, happens fairly frequently) and listening to them gripe about the cold while the rest of us natives are just "eh, another cold day, live with it." What's even more entertaining is the reactions some of these people give me when they find out that I like to walk everywhere, regardless of the weather. Not even some of the other locals can quite fathom that. :P

yeah, and I'm sure moving south, we'd complain about hot summers.

I think the coldest I saw anyway, was -3 at around 7 am

This morning was about -30 (-22 if you're American :P), come February it's usually -40 to -50 celsius (-40 to -58 Farenheit) with windchill.  This is the time of year when the radio starts to broadcast warnings about exposed skin freezing in minutes.
The cold here could probably kill someone... but no-one is idiotic enough to let it.
Title: Re: Where have all the good posters gone?
Post by: VANGUARD on January 18, 2011, 09:29:59 AM
where approx are you from? I would hope no one is dumb enough to expose themselves and freeze to death. There are days I can't believe how cold it is, 10 or 15, maybe colder, and some don't wear hats, some don't wear jackets, some with skirts or a dress on. shorts.

I don't get people. I prefer bundling up than to just wear shorts. That's what I don't like about winter is the cold. I prefer the warmth over the  "I have to put this on. dang it."

I'm in Winnipeg.  One of the coldest cities on the prairie (though I would imagine pretty much anywhere in Saskatchewan would be colder... not many cities there though :P).
Once you get up to this latitude temperatures don't change too much the farther north you go until you get to the high arctic, the main difference will be the length of the seasons. I think Churchill is basically the same but has shorter summers.  It might get a little colder (maybe -40 without windchill).
That said, winter here starts in late October/early November and lasts until late April.  Often we'll still have snow melting in May.

I don't know, I think it's been pretty busy... 17 replies before I even notice the thread!  Well, usually I check PD first thing after checking e-mail in the morning, but for some reason not today.  I don't know why.

And yeah we are sure getting some more snow!

I'm not going to have more snow. I canceled my subscription. Snow banks are taller than the cars itself. So, no more snow here  ;D

!!!MINUS 40!!!

!!!DOUBLE-YOU---TEE---EFF!!!

HOW CAN YOU EVEN:
- start a car?
- go to the store?
- smoke a cigarette?
- LIVE??

I came to the conclusion about a couple of years ago that HELL is truly a FREEZING environment. With those temperatures, there isn't the warmth of love... only... cold... hell... despair... hate... abandonment... D2 Level 16... ahhhh...

Lol, well I don't have that option (I work outside once or twice a week).  But taking the bus removes the problem of car-starting (I take transit everywhere, I have most of the city bus routes memorized -- bus passes are cheaper too) :P.

Seriously though, it's not that bad... as long as you're used to it.
Temperature is a form of perception (no different from any other sense).  What I can't stand is 15 - 30 degree (celsius) temperatures.  Way too hot for me.  (Writing temperatures on a mostly American forum can be confusing).

@Omega I'm curious why you don't like Florida.  Your winter is like my summer.
Title: Re: Where have all the good posters gone?

Yeah, it is a tad confusing. I only know 0 C is 32 F. that's about the only conversion I know.

Coldest I was in, -10 I think, maybe colder. It's not fun.

Temperature is a form of perception (no different from any other sense).  What I can't stand is 15 - 30 degree (celsius) temperatures.  Way too hot for me.

Celsius is so simple; 0 is freezing and 100 is boiling. In Fahrenheit, it's 32 is freezing and 212 is boiling... Not logical!

I understand what you mean. I'm used to it on the other extreme end. I work at a grocery store as a supervisor, and everyday when I'm on my thirty minute break, I sit in my car, smoke and listen to music. I have an interior thermometer just for curiosity's sake in my car because my A/C is broken and I'd like to know how hot it is. (No, I'm not ever going to get the A/C fixed.)

Anyways, it can be in the middle of summer and I'll still go sit in my car while it's, say, 102 outside (38 Celsius). But when I get in my car to sit inside and "chill" for 30 minutes, my thermometer reads 162 degrees (72 Celsius). Now, of course I roll down a window so I don't smoke up the car. It probably cools off to about 135 degrees (57 Celsius) by the time I'm done with my break. But, I could sit there the whole 30 minutes and not crack one bead of sweat... and this is Houston, TX... 90%+ humidity. I love the warmth of 135-140 degrees and find it extremely relaxing with a nice smoke and a chill audio track to go with it. Paradise!

It's all in the mind... I just wish I knew how to make it all in the mind in the winter! lol

@ wazzazzle: I like the sound of your summers, sounds like around late spring or early fall for me, just when the temperatures are just right.  :D Dunno if I could live with those cold winters, though.

You're right though. If you're adjusted to it, you can live in just about any climate. :)

I had Descent I and II playing on my mp3 last night. That's Descent related.
Of course as we speak right now, I am listening to "Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2" music.

Ah, call of Duty; Descents' competition.  ;D in my books anyway.

Descent and Call of Duty, great series!

Sadly, COD is easier to play and releases new titles. oh.....wait, just came to me, Descent for Wii, that's new. so that's cool :)
I wonder how that will play on the wii, but there's only one way, and that is to buy it!

edit/update: someone at my job said that it could get to -18 degrees tonight. Lovely.  ::)

Too bad it isn't Friday now. I can just stay home over the weekend, but there's still one more day.

Yesterday (or was it the day before?), a low of -16, today I didn't see the low for last night bu this morning it was -5.

Every where I have looked, weather sites show current and future, often with a little bit of 'coldest day on record' type of history, never a recent history of local temps in the last few days.  I would like to know thing like how cold did it get last night or how much snow we got in the last storm but don't see that anywhere unless it breaks some record.

My ideal temperature is -10 to 0 celsius... 14 to 32 farenheit.

Some people would say that's "cold", but I personally don't mind those temps at all.

I'm personally most comfortable at about 30°-50° F (0°-10° C).

YIKES. 40 messages on a Soupe I missed. I suppose I've been gone over a week. I've swapped to night clinicals, working 12 hours a night about twice a week, plus class, plus a day clinical, plus work, plus church, plus band, plus girlfriend.... But I managed to squeeze in a little singleplayer D1 last week. And I've recently been going through the new Sonic Colors in whatever spare time I can find.... Very good Sonic the Hedgehog game, actually, if anyone here cares about the blue guy anymore (considering his troubled past).

And in keeping with the current topic of temperature, it got down to about 15 degrees F here in Birmingham last week. That's pretty intense for us Alabamians. First time I've had to wear a long-sleeve shirt, full coat, knee-high socks, boots, cap, and ski gloves in a while. It was also the first time I remember seeing 6 inches of snow on our lawn, over a layer of ice from freezing rain. Fortunately, we're back up to around 40 or 50 now.  ;)

Well, we're getting the tip of your Northern iceberg here in Houston. My complaints about how the upper 40s was unbearable has now reached an ungodly 19 degree overnight low, and we've got 3 inches of snow predicted for Friday... I do not know how you Northerners stand this crap! This is complete and utter rip-your-hair-out TORTURE for me! I keep warm by jumping up and down and screaming at the top of my lungs, "I HATE WINTER!!!"  >:(

It needs to be 105 already!  8)
