Title: What's the right way to patch up the dual 1.4 patch?
Post by: VANGUARD on December 16, 2010, 02:20:48 PM
I received a Windows copy of Descent 3 that comes bundled with Mercenary. I forgot the order to patch it up. Was it 1, Install Descent 3 (that was too easy), 2, use the bundle patch, 3, install mercenary, 4, use the stanard 1.4 patch?

You're making it too complex.  It's simple:

1. Install D3
2. Install Mercenary
3. Install the appropriate 1.4 patch (sounds like the Dual-Jewel patch from what you said)

Thanks. I thought I heard to use the bundled patch BEFORE installing Mercenary. I could be wrong. I'm not even sure why some suggested one over another to tell you the truth.
anyways, thanks again!

There's a good reason to install Merc before the 1.4 patch:

The Merc installer is only v1.2, and the 1.4 patch will update some Merc items, including a few level bugs as I recall.

I must have heard wrong then a while back. For all I know, I read that someone installed the patches, then mercenary, and something didn't work, and I forgot the "didn't work" part.  :-[

That is simple. thanks.

Yep.  If you install Merc after the patch, you're pulling some things back to v1.2.  :P

Thomas has a D3 installer that does all this for you so that you don't have to remember it, also D3 won't need a CD.

And Thomas' installer includes a bunch of other stuff, too.

Download the full version of Descent 3 (http://www.dateiliste.com/en/descent-3/32-download-descent-3/527-download-the-full-version-of-descent-3.html)

Is it just me or does this seem like this is some under the table thing. If Descent is freeware, you should just go to a website, and download it. But I'm being told to send a message to "descent" and say I have a copy of *cough* descent.

Maybe it's just me. As far as Descent is concerned, I have Descent 3 (windows edition), bought that at Amazon. I did a work around with disc 2. All I did was copy all of the data of disc 2 onto a harddrive, and when installing the game, it asks for disc 2, I just went to that folder, clicked "ok" or whatever, and it worked.

And I also bought from amazon, the definitive collection of D1 and D2 :)

Tons of Descent!

That's because it's not freeware.  Thomas just has an installer to make the installation/patching automatic.

Sorry for not participating here a lot recently. I was busy doing D3 stuff. ;)

Yes, our Descent 3 installer is some sort of an "under the table" item, but I have no problem publishing and defending it in public, if required. ;)

It's not illegal as long as you have your own Descent 3. That's why we ask for a statement that you have your own version before you can download it. The FAQ actually explains that.

"Descent" is a team of admins at Dateiliste that can give you access. The idea with the team was to cover most of the 24 hours each day has, as requests are coming in whenever someone's asleep or down the pub. ;)

Is it descent 1 and Descent 2 that is freeware? I wish I could get Descent 3 for linux, but right now, that's pricey over at amazon.

No, D1 and D2 are not freeware.  The source code was released, but that is not the same as saying the whole game is freeware.   You still need the data files.

The Linux version of Descent 3 is terribly buggy. The same actually applies to the Windows version, but just with fewer bugs. ;)
Better run the Windows version under Wine on Linux.

thanks for the clarification guys. I only played the linux version online, so I have no idea what it's like throughout the game.
But I have the windows copy (also the D1 and D2 definitive collection :) ), and found a way to get the game to install using "playonlinux".
