Need me some good Descent 2 missions...right now the best single player missions i have on rebirth are Project mandrill and Phobos....anyone else got some old goodies?
-
There are a lot of great missions for D2 you should try.
I would highly recommend 'Obsidian', 'Entropy Experiment' and its sequel, 'Krillidian Krusade', 'Konflict at Karon', and 'The Enemy Within'.
Those are great and very high-quality missions.

The Phobos Encounter is my personal favorite, but I see you already have that.
Y'know, it may be my favorite, but I haven't played it recently...I should change that. :P
-
One I'd recommend is Project Hydro. Similar design to phobos encounter (but the custom robots look a lot better imo). Starts off slow and the first few levels aren't so much to look at but around level 4 or level 5 it starts to get really nice really fast.
There are 18 regular levels + 5 secret levels (one of the secret levels is mandatory), so it'll probably take a while to beat. Also, not to spoil the story but there's an anticlimax instead of a climax.

One thing to note is you don't face any custom robots until level 2.

NEVER mention Enemy Within in my presence xD
That has got to be one of the most frustrating, infuriating, monitor-smashing, joystick-through-the-wall mission sets Ive ever played, i quit after i ran into the player mega/homing flash missile armed boss robot. (that was so kind as to have the "back shots only" weakness also)
The only available earth shakers are in that room, and if you so much as fart funny in that room, even cloaked your greeted by a literall WALL of flashes and megas from the boss and the ridiculous numbers of omega/flash bots in the room
The rest of those ive never heard of....gotta give em a look...but if they are made by the same author as Enemy Within ill just pass....I don't mind challenging maps, but putting one shot kill mechs behind blind corners and arming your bosses with player weps gets just a LITTLE infuriating after a while
edit: Wait a minute..did i accidentally just start a new topic????

... and if you so much as fart funny in that room ...
Guess that Boss doesn't have much of a sense of humor. ;)
-
xD I remember my first time venturing in that room, i accidentally bumped into a wall and immediately was flashed and mega missiled to hell before i could say "Holy overkill batman!"
-
There is a toned down version of EW available, if you want to give it a try. Check the news section.

No it was intentional. ;) Actually it looked like a good topic so I moved your post.

If you'll ever try D2X-XL, take a look at Anthology (by Sirius), The Kartsal Motivation (3 level demo by Pumo), The Sphere and Dimensional Intersect (by Yokelassence) and Warp Shockwave, Boiling Point and Lunar Outpost Reloaded (by me).
-
...But I should also point out that some of those can be processor heavy for some lower-end computers, just so you are forewarned.
Other than that, they ARE good levels, though. ;)
-
Lunar Outpost reloaded is amazing though.
-
Oh, absolutely. Although I think the version I've got is bugged...Deidel told me once to download a newer version of it, but I can't remember if I ever did...:P
There are so many things these days that I never get around to. :P x2
-
It's mostly effects (particle fx, lightning) that are too much for older computers and/or weak graphics hardware. The missions I have listed can be played w/o these as well.
-
Yeah, but...it's a lot of those effects that makes it cool. :P
BTW, since I was unfamiliar with it, I downloaded and played Project HYDRO yesterday. At first I wasn't too impressed with it, particularly with it's level design, but it definitely got better in later levels, so I double Alter-Fox's recommendation for it. :)
-
Oops! Sorry! ::) Fixed it. :)
-
The effects are only a small part of a good D2X-XL level. It's the level design and the gameplay that make it. Most levels do not use that many effects. You already have the increased size and level of detail, skyboxes, colored light, advanced trigger mechanisms, better models, etc. etc. All these do not depend on effects (some of which aren't very demanding - people should be able to use smoke and light trails on all but the lowliest computers).
-
True, the same is true of any Descent level.
But then you get to computers like my own laptop, and then it can't even handle that much. :P
-
I third the Project Hydro mission, that is a nice mission. I also recommend Legacy of Chaos if you want a nice, hard 3 level mission with new robots by Darkhorse/Sirius.
There is indeed a toned down version of the Enemy Within level set. The boss still has those weapons and that weakness but his reaction time should be insanely slower on Trainee and Rookie and slightly decreased for Hotshot and Ace. Insane is still Insane though.
-
I guess my boss was particularly evil on hotshot then...he would kept blindfiring megas into the spawn area if i was anywhere near the door when it opened...even when i flared it open and hid xD
