Title: No more Good Old Games?
Post by: -<WillyP>- on September 19, 2010, 02:04:03 PM
Today when I went to visit gog.com (http://gog.com), I was suprised to see the website had been replace by a single page with this message:

Quote from: gog.com
  Dear GOG users,

We have recently had to give serious thought to whether we could really keep GOG.com the way it is. We've debated on it for quite some time and, unfortunately, we've decided that GOG.com simply cannot remain in its current form.

We're very grateful for all support we've received from all of you in the past two years. Working on GOG.com was a great adventure for all of us and an unforgettable journey to the past, through the long and wonderful history of PC gaming.

This doesn't mean the idea behind GOG.com is gone forever. We're closing down the service and putting this era behind us as new challenges await.

On a technical note, this week we'll put in place a solution to allow everyone to re-download their games. Stay tuned to this page and follow us on Twitter and Facebook for updates.

All the best,
GOG.com Team

And posted on their Facebook page, about an hour ago:

The official
statement from GOG.com's management about the whole situation will be announced
soon. We'll have more details about this tomorrow.

I can only assume sales weren't meeting expectations, but that of course is pure speculation.   I hope they return soon!

That is sad, good thing I just downloaded Descent from them. Shame they couldn't get Shadow Warrior up and running on their site before they went down. Sad...

That sucks!  :(
Too bad they didn't put up Mechwarrior 2 before they went down.

It's a hoax for going out of beta. Supposedly the CEO posted on some financial board for investors to ignore today.

Scared the crap out of me too. Very poor marketing move by GOG. It's not a good idea to cause an uproar on the Internet.

Doing unusual things in order to draw attention is a two sided sword.  It can both succeed fabulously, or spell doom... and on the Internet the results are magnified many times over.

There is a lot of speculation on GoG's Facebook page that this is just a prelude to ending beta status.  If it is then the page at GoG.com is misleading.
