Title: New D1 level set WIP: Nefarious Assault
Post by: Sapphirus on August 30, 2010, 01:40:58 PM
I'm currently working on a 16+3 level set for Descent 1 called 'Nefarious Assault', It'll feature robot sound replacements (mostly from Descent 2), custom textures for each level (within each .DTX files for Rebirth, and within the 'mods\nefarius\textures\levelxx' directory for XL), and perhaps new soundtrack.
(NOTE for the Rebirth Users: Before loading this level in D1X-Rebirth, play a level, turn the cockpit off before jumping into this one)

Okay, I've decided to release a 8+1 levels demo version of Nefarious Assault
Here's the file:
http://www.enspiar.com/dmdb/viewMission.php?id=359

(I've also implemented Xeria Base Dreena (now named in Nefarious Assault, Base Dreena), Seraph Mine, and Dragon Pit Outpost into the set, I'll implement Mount Dawn into the final version)
And here are the screenshots of each level (in order ending with the secret level screenshot):

So far, interesting.

One problem (and it might be my system) ... the sounds in your mods didn't playback on my system very well.  It was... very bad.  I had to disable to Sounds in the Mod on my system.

Nice levels.  I did them all on Hotshot (which for me is like cold starting on insane :P).

I especially liked level 6, with destroying the Hell Falcon.

Would you take level contributions?  I might want to contribute maybe four or so levels (I have some D1 ideas and I don't know what to use them for).

Since there's no activity on the Descent mods board anyway... and this is a particularly good levelset...
I have an idea for how to make the skies look a little more realistic.
It kind of ruins the immersion when you shoot your lasers at the sky and they hit it as though it's a wall, doesn't it?
My idea is to make the sky an illusion wall.

Also, I'm curious what your soundtrack for this mission will be.  Feel free to use some of the songs I made for Project Ragnarok for this mission as well... (you seem to be into re-using music between missions, like I am).  In particular it seems one of the levels in this mission is... connected... to one of the Project Ragnarok levels :P.

Darn it...I've forgotten (again) whether or not I actually downloaded this or not... I just know that I still haven't played it yet.  ::)

Well, at least I've got Rebirth on my new laptop now...it's just D1 Rebirth is a little glitchy enough that playing it is...well...impractical. Not sure what the issue is, but this version is also out of date, so I'm hoping that an update will fix the issue...whatever it is.

I just have to remember to update it.

...

Darn it! I've got too many darn things to remember. :P

Well, you need the latest version of Rebirth to play Nefarius Assault past level 1 anyway :P.
At least on my computer.

It works fine in D2X-XL too, but the sheer volume of robots means there will be massive slowdowns if you have fx enabled and your PC is not super-high-end.

EDIT: I just noticed that all the levels past level 10 have no names.  It seems someone forgot to add them in the editor :P.

I forgot about D2X-XL, I suppose I could use that, although I've had some problems with it too...it RUNS okay, except it's ridiculously slow and jumpy, even with all the effects off and the renderer turned way down.

Depends on the fx and their settings, I suppose.

If this was turned into a D2X-XL level set, you could create a skybox instead, and shots and missiles would just enter the skybox when leaving the regular level, and vanish at the borders of the skybox. If the skybox is sufficiently large that would look like they simply got to small to be recognized anymore.

I think Sapphirewolf is going for the D1 feel though.
Also, I am privy to the knowledge that he is working on yet another D2X-XL mission, which does seem to have some story connection to this one (even though I have no knowledge of what the story is, one of the level names tipped me off :P).
And that D2X-XL mission is bigger than this (bigger levels and more levels).

I will remove this post if Sapphirewolf asks me to.

What is it please that makes up the "D1" feeling? Textures? Sounds? Weapons? Robots? You can use only those from D1 in any D2X-XL mission. Btw, I wasn't saying he had to convert the mission (in a sense of trying to force him into it).
Title: Re: New D1 level set WIP: Nefarious Assault
Post by: Scyphi on July 10, 2011, 03:30:15 PM
I dunno what makes up the D1 feeling Karx, I really wish I could tell you so you could use you're almighty programming skills to apply it. But just something about D2 taints the D1 feel. Not that this is a bad thing. It just means that D2 has it's own feel that's different from D1.

Also, building things within the limitations of the original D1 adds to the challenge for the level builder, and if successful, adds to the charm for the player of the level. Some of my favorite D1 levels are my favorites simply because of what the builder was creative enough to accomplish within D1 that made you stop and wonder how they did it, whereas in D2 on up, the mystery is lessened somewhat.

Again, not that there's anything wrong with that. It's just...some days you want to do it the hard way. :)

I'm sure Sapphire Wolf has his own reasons as well.

Post by: SaladBadger on July 10, 2011, 03:47:25 PM
I am willing to bet that half of the reason why D1 levels feel so different in D2 is because of the palettes -- many of the D1 textures did not transfer over to the D2 palettes very well, and this just kinda kills them in several cases (see that door with the four rectangular panels? I'm talking about that.) Naturally, since D2X-XL already supports high-color textures and DXX-Rebirth, in theroy, after the .PIG addon system is complete, could possibly support high-color textures, this part of the issue could be solved.

I'd also cite robot sounds and the crippling of the D1 bosses as part of the problem

I agree with Scyphi -- Nefarius Assault is D1 but it looks like D3 and that's the main reason I like it.  Only problem is it's way too hard for me :/.

Insanity's also probably onto something on the more technical aspect. Now that I think about it, the D1 bots AI always did seem a little off in D2, even in D2X-XL (no offense, Karx).

I was recently fiddling around with the custom exit terrain with PaintShopPro 7 and a little of Photoshop CS  Here are the results of the custom exit terrain (and textures) (taken via D1x Rebirth):
Level 1's custom exit texture-
(http://s1.postimage.org/p4avoeh0/nefar_level01_exit.jpg) (http://postimage.org/image/p4avoeh0/)
Level 10's custom exit texture and terrain-
(http://s1.postimage.org/p4mgftxg/nefar_level10_exit.jpg) (http://postimage.org/image/p4mgftxg/)
Level 14's custom exit texture and terrain-
(http://s1.postimage.org/p4y179dw/nefar_level14_exit.jpg) (http://postimage.org/image/p4y179dw/)
(I kinda gave the last 4 levels industrial looking terrain bumpings since the final world is an industrial world).

Anyways, I'm currently toning things down slightly in the mission set, several touch ups, and working on the briefing (NO suggestions or ideas, please.  I'll handle this one, trust me. :) )

Oh yeah for those who were gonna wonder what 4 worlds that this mission will take place, here are the following planets and their environment-

Planet 1 - Xeria
Environment: Jungle/Rainforest, Water

Planet 2 - Dru'on
Environment: Fire and Lava

Planet 3 - Vorauth
Environment: Ice Plains

Planet 4 - Titanius VII
Environment: Industrial

Secret level worlds (either a moon or planet):
Secret level 1 - Rehulni (the moon of Dru'on)
Environment: Rocky Vaccum
Inner Environment: Toxic waste tunnels

Secret Level 2 - Planet Hynren
Environment: Rocky Plains
Inner Environment: Varies

Secret Level 3 - Tyur' kalinx (moon of Titanius VII)
Environment: Alien
Inner Environment: Alien Caves

I'll include the files containing 16 levels+3 secret levels at some point

Don't worry, Micro Machines (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Micro_Machines) have kind of been phased out, especially in the US, since Hasbro bought them out. Pity, too, I used to collect their Star Trek models.  :-\

Finally sat down and played this, got as far as level seven before my laptop's battery ran low and I figured that'd be a good place to stop.

All in all, pretty good, though I was kind of upset that Dreena base had been toned down a little, and I did notice a number of unaligned textures that probably should be fixed before the final release. And there was one level (I forget which) that had it's exit tunnel glitch (the camera suddenly slid out of the tunnel and out into the emptiness of cyberspace, and seemed to keep going until I hit escape, which made it jump to the next level) but I'm not sure if that was a fault of the level set or D2X-XL. Wouldn't be surprised if it was D2X-XL, I'm still working on getting the bugs out of my installment. One issue I'm facing, for example, is the fact that when a lot of sounds are playing at once, they kind of blip out into silence until things calm down again, and they start playing again. I suspect it's due to how I've got D2X-XL set up in the sounds department, but I haven't found the right setting to fix it yet.

But the level set, as much as I've seen, has been pretty good. Architecture isn't overly complicated, but not too simple either. Difficultly started out easy, but slowly getting more and more difficult, which is good. So yeah, all's good save what I've already mentioned. :)
