Title: Descent 3 movies (Dateiliste)
Post by: Jayman on May 19, 2010, 12:19:13 PM
I have a win 7 64 bit PC (processor: Pentium(R) dual-core CPU E6300 @ 2.80 GHz 2.80 GHz RAM: 8.00 GB) and I use the
Dateiliste version d3 to play. But when I play the only movie that plays is the dolby ad. and just to be clear I'm not talking about the ones where it show something happening live in the game from a different angle.

Do you have the files in your \Descent3\Movies folder?

The Descent 3 version from Dateiliste turns the movies off by default because most players don't want them (after having seen them often enough).

Start Descent 3, click on Setup, then the Misc page. Remove the text "-nointro" from the command line switches.

Remember to put that switch back in after you've watches it 100 + times.  ;D

All it says is United States. Oh and I have a new problem the mouse response is choppy but not in the briefings :'(

All it says is United States.

You're not looking in the right place.

Again: In the D3 Launcher, go to the "Misc" tab, and look in the text field toward the bottom.  There will be a number of options, including "-nointro".  Take that option out.  [If it's not there, you're missing some movie files from your installation.]

Oh and I have a new problem the mouse response is choppy but not in the briefings :'(

That means you have an extra Descent3 process still running on your machine.  Go to Task Manager and stop any processes called 'main.exe'.

No, he's looking in the right place. My command line says United States too. I've ever touched it because I have the original Descent and I just use Vortex for my cmd line swithces. His problem must be imbedded somewhere in some file.

Weird.

In any case, there are two things to check to ensure the movies play:

1.  Make sure the movie files are in the \Descent3\Movies folder.
2.  Make sure the "-nointro" command line option is not being used (whereever it happens to be set).

What if you put in "-yesintro"?  :D

Adding some seriousness, what about "-nointro_0"? By puttin a 0 or a 1 after a command, it usually means off and on, respectively.

I think Thomas needs to shed some light as to why it doesn't work if the command isn't there.

There's a field called "Optional D3 Command Line Switches". That's the one I was talking about. Remove the "-nointro" from there if you want to see the movies.

This command line switch is a D3 command line switch (or parameter). Nothing will happen if you make that something else, or the game would refuse to start, I don't know. That depends on the software.

The D3 version from Dateiliste puts the "-nointro" parameter in by default. That's all.  :D Normally, this concerns the dolby intro, not the game movies.

If the movie files don't exist, then something or someone must have deleted them.

Just tested that. I compared the files with the files from the original CDs.

I can confirm that the Descent 3 version from Dateiliste doesn't contain the complete movies for Descent 3: Retribution. It only contains the file for Mercenary. That's a bug.

The next version will fix that.

Excuse my typical ignorance, but what is the "Dateiliste D3 version"?

Dang.  That's what I thought.  I finally completed D3 retribution and there was no movie at the end.  Luckily I saved after I beat the end boss (out of habit).

I'm using the Dateiliste version so I don't need my CDs.  Good thing too, because my CD drive stopped working a few months ago.

Well assuming that everyone's meant to own a copy anyhow - can those files not simply be transferred across from the CD-ROM into the appropriate directory?

I already answered that, Jayman.

Again, it happens when you have an extra Descent3 process running (usually left after a crash).  Just go to Task Manager, stop any process called 'main.exe'.

No. They're compressed in the original installer too.

Its a version made for new pc's. Read about it hear http://www.dateiliste.com/descent-3/26-descent-3-installation-updates-and-modifications/120-download-the-full-version-of-descent-3.html (http://www.dateiliste.com/descent-3/26-descent-3-installation-updates-and-modifications/120-download-the-full-version-of-descent-3.html)

No no no I mean why dose it run an extra Descent3 process. Sorry

Ah, understood.  The extra D3 process is usually left behind after a crash, or if D3 didn't exit correctly (often caused by video or sound driver issues).

-------

Jayman, you already own Descent3, correct?

rawr. He's just trying to help. Be nice.

You could install D3 somewhere off the disks, then grab the movies from there and put them where they need to be in the datieliste version.

Also:

Quote
The complete installation of Descent 3 takes at least a few days, and novice computer users have no chance at all.
Where did you get that from? I've never had problems installing D3, and it certainly didn't take days.

Also again:

I just noticed a mention of OG3... Any chance of a working stand-alone installer for that? I got it working for about a month on my old PC and haven't been able to get it working since. It was awesome and I'd love to be able to get it working without downloading and installing all the other stuff I already have.

He's talking about Dateiliste's D3. That has just about EVERYTHING there is for D3. Loads of missions and other things.

That's the wrong advice in this case, because the files are there. They've only got a filesize of 1 kB. That's why it wasn't noticed before.

Post by: Crash on May 21, 2010, 05:46:00 AM
That must be some good compression they're using there.  :D
Title: Re: Descent 3 movies (Dateiliste)
Post by: Kaiaatzl on May 21, 2010, 06:35:18 AM
I believe the 1 kb file size is because the movies don't contain anything.  The files just need to be there for the game to run (no idea why Outrage made it that way).  On "medium" install, the movies are read from the CD.  (I believe it works the same way in D2.)

My problem is I can't get them off the CD because my CD drive doesn't work.  (Even when it did, the installer would crash when I tried to do the full install).

It takes you a maximum of 2 hours to download "the rest", including OG3, ready to be played, if you have DSL, maybe another 15 minutes to install it. You can have a coffee, some snack, or a beer in the meantime.

I'd take me 10 hours (or more) to create your OG3 stand-alone installer, without coffee, snack, or a beer.

So far, almost 200 others were happy with "the rest", including OG3.

You're right, that's a "No". ;)

But you're the one who can install Descent 3 in less than 2 days full-time and never had any problems. ;)

I can assure you, you are really funny. ;)

I don't considering downloading and installing 3gb of extras to be part of installing D3. I also already have a nearly 5-gb D3 folder, why would I want to use your installer and end up with less in the end? Nobody even plays OG3 anyway so it would be a waste to install the entire game again just to use one mod that nobody plays anyway that requires other players to play with.

Am I doing something wrong when installing OG3 or does it just not work period? And how did you get it to work in your installer when the one it comes with doesn't?

It worked for you.

It's what's called a session URI (or URL). It also disappears after some time.

I'm not sure what OG3 is to be honest but this installer is pretty good.
It certainly opened my eyes to all the mods out there. I can understand why people would want to use the discs at the same time.
I understand that not everyone believes in things that they haven't done/installed themselves but this package Thomas has released works great for me.

Olympia Gold is a racing mod for D3. And tyhe reason nobody ever plays it, is it never worked 100%.

Seems like a fun concept though, if Tomas got it working maybe someone will host it, once word gets out some more and people get it installed.

Well, I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels that reinstalling several gigabytes of stuff just to get OG3 working isn't worth it.
