Title: So I made a little dark ambient...
Post by: Chaplain5 on November 05, 2017, 10:32:39 AM
Hey all!

I decided to try my hand at "jamming" a bit with Audacity, and generated some kinda sorta creepy sounding noises. I thought someone else might like to use it, so I put it up on Bandcamp for free (https://atenindustries.bandcamp.com/track/dark-ambient-01). It's not much, but it's something. I'll probably use it for a Freespace modding project sometime in the future.

I put it under the CC license as Attribution only, so people can use it for good clean stuff.

This is the first time I've done anything like this, so please let me know what you think!

Pretty nice music. Reminds me of the ambient music from Frictional Games "Penumbra Overture".

Seems a bit quiet, I had to raise my speakers almost to max to hear it, but otherwise, a nice piece!

If you had fun making that in Audicity, you might find LMMS interesting: LMMS (https://lmms.io/)

Thanks, super glad that you liked it!  :) I understand that it was a bit quiet, I raised the amplitude as much as I could without clipping.

Thanks, I'm going to check it out!

Hey guys! I made some more! (https://atenindustries.bandcamp.com/track/dark-ambient-02)

Very proud of this one. :) Again it's really just a snippet, not much, but it was fun to come up with.

Would really like to take a look at these.  Maybe my internet issues will clear up enough tonight to stream two minutes of audio...

I like it! It reminds me of my dabbling at making music between 1999~2003. You might like the ambient music used in Basewars (streamable below):

Oh, that's cool! Thanks! Beyond the Black and Dreamscapes are my favorites. I'd love to make music like that, the flowing ambient that subtly changes. I'm racking my brains for a way to synthesize something like that in Audacity, because (ok, call me lazy) I don't have the time and energy to learn a "real" DAW.

Time for something a little different! (https://atenindustries.bandcamp.com/track/woods-ambient-01)

I don't want to be depressing, so I figured some upbeat ambient was in order.

Does anyone know if there are plugins for Audacity that allow you to synthesize instruments, i.e., plugins that add functionality to the "Generate" menu?

I haven't ever really looked, but I'd be surprised if there were. It's been my understanding that Audacity wasn't really built with that in mind.

Right, that's what I supposed as well...
