This post is going to cover the updates that have been going on over at our Sol Contingency forums and I'll do a better job to keep you guys in the loop as things happen.
First, there are some preliminary screenshots (https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.628052480673960.1073741836.246328898846322&type=3) of a map that I'm working on called Ice Breaker. The back story I have for this map is this:
Planet Phendrana was devastated when a meteor hit the surface, diverting it off of its normal orbit. Now that it is further away from its Sun, the whole planet has frozen over. There are massive blizzards that cover the planet as a result of the the change in orbit. All human installations were abandoned prior to the catastrophic event, but some of the machinery survived the climate change. Still performing maintenance, the robots of ISB-0215 have cleared upper levels of the facility, but were frozen in place when an insulated water reservoir was breached when the ceiling of the main atrium gave out. I chose the name Ice Breaker because of 1, the ice (duh lol) and 2, because I designed this map to be a balance of vertical and horizontal action to "break the ice" for non-6DoF players.
In addition to the map, Max also posted (https://www.facebook.com/preparefordescent/posts/640508302761711) the soundtrack for Ice Breaker, which is Martin's Isolation (https://soundcloud.com/martin-britz/isolation#t=0:00)
I hope you guys enjoy playing the map when it comes out!
Next, we announced our main ship for our Proving Grounds release: the Eclipse (http://forum.preparefordescent.com/download/file.php?id=933&mode=view).
There has also been a released screenshot of our missiles (http://forum.preparefordescent.com/download/file.php?id=984&mode=view) of choice for Proving Grounds: The Dumbfire Missile and the Seeker Missile (names are WIP of course). There was also a screenshot (http://forum.preparefordescent.com/download/file.php?id=995&mode=view) of a bot that DuderSeb came up with (tentatively the "Stealth Hulk)
1/2 Hawk is an absolute badass when it come to UDK and UE4 and he designed this (http://forum.preparefordescent.com/download/file.php?id=996&mode=view) for use in his recreation of Neptune in Sol Contingency. It's like the classic screens in D1 and D2 with rotating bots, but in 3D! Fear not, the classic rotating bot screens are still around ;)
Keep your eyes peeled for more info! Feel free to hit us up at our forums (http://forum.preparefordescent.com/index.php) or just PM me. We want to keep the Descent community involved with this game because we first and foremost want to make a game that we can be playing with you guys as a community. As fans. 1/2Hawk said it best when someone from the DU forums came over (http://forum.preparefordescent.com/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=470) with some questions about microtransactions and other things.
...right or wrong we're not in it for the money - would rather be playing with y'all.
The concern for community involvement has also reached within our Dev forums:
I really want us to get more intimate with the community. I'm worried about this a lot.
Not only do I want to be a project that gets the community involved, but also I would love to be able to take all levels of feedback into account in order to try and make something that appeals to all just like Descent did.
Same here. There's several reasons I, personally, haven't brought up and pressed this as an issue:
A tangible, working game is far more valuable than any talk: true feedback will come post-release
PG is a demo, so almost everything can be considered temporary (UE4 after PG?)
Sol C has limited development time & resources
For now, that's all, but we will be releasing some videos soon. I'll leave you with Verran's video (https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B9ZIpGE43I9RelhFWnZsT3NOWDA/view) of flying around our first announced map, Vertigo, using a Sidewinder Pro and trichording everywhere.

Just one word: Awesome 8)
-
I agree!!! Very very nice video :)
Sure made me miss the old mines
-
Thanks for that! We're planning on having some good video footage coming soon after the KS for DU ends (we don't want anyone to think we stole DU's thunder last minute), so keep an eye out for that!

Here's an awesome teaser that we put out on our FB page XD
"Soon..."

Haha don't worry, you'll have your hands on it soon enough! we've been putting overtime to get this thing shipped out sooner. I feel bad for the devs in other time zones because some of them are up until 3-4 in the morning working or testing stuff when it's barely like 1 or 2 for me. We're gonna deliver this on a very strong note.
-
Can this run on Linux? I only have Linux Mint.
-
Unfortunately, UE3 (what we're making the Proving Grounds demo with) doesn't support Linux. After PG, however, we are going to use UE4, which does support it. With that said, our PG demo won't support Linux, but our full game will definitely support it. Sorry about that :/
-
New update on our player ship concepts!
Check out the ship designs that we created before finally choosing the Eclipse! Also visible is the Talon, our current placeholder, featured in our recent team cast.
Cheers!

as long as I get a crack at it at some point :)

Don't worry, you definitely will!
Until then, we're looking into adding additional weapons to what we've shown so far. I won't say any more ;)

I like the Talon. It actually looks like a fighter ship. The others look more like Descent robot rejects...which isn't necessarily a bad thing, either. :P

Lol don't sweat it. A few comments were made in the dev forums like how most of them looked like kabuto helmets. I think the Umbra looks cool, but not for the main ship. Maybe for a neat stealth mission or a enemy stealth bot...which we already have in the Stealth Hulk. There was another ship they showed that I liked, but no one else really seemed to care for. It looked a lot like the Anubis from Freespace.
-
I read a word or two, and thought "Ultrabots" which has NOTHING to do with Descent.
That's a game I wish I could load up again.
I'm busy with a baby son, so I may not always have to look up stuff, but hopefully will have time to play these games once they're available.
-
ok it's fine. Attached are a Kabuto helmet and the PVF Anubis from Freespace.

Umbra for a stealth mission definitely, but that's kind of a go-figure since it clearly resembles a real-life stealth jet. ::)
You know, upon thinking about it, the Anubis may look cool, but it's design doesn't strike me as very logical... ???
-
Well it is meant for space missions, not planetary missions. Logical or not, it looks pretty cool :P haha
-
almost looks like a star wars ship from one of the newer episodes
-
Yeah I bet. But nah, the other devs said that the concept art for the Pulsar (the ship I liked) looked too much like a guide bot
-
I like the Talon myself, though not so much the tail.
-
I personally think the weapons are too far apart. In-game, the positioning of the laser cannons are quite noticeable and different from the Pyro. The other cannons are normal though.
-
Hey guys, I know that we devs have been quiet, but I assure you that we're working hardcore to get you guys a bunch of cool new (and maybe old) stuff. Keep an eye out for new updates!
-
This is, like, the only place where you could say "we're going to bring you some old stuff!" and people will actually be excited about it... ;D
-
Lol right? That's what we're all about, bringing back the good stuff XD
-
I like old stuff. Heck, I am old stuff!
;D
-
Lol I'm sure you're not. But at any rate, be ready for some good stuff soon! The Descent community is in for some awesome stuff!
-
Hey guys...guess what we've got! You know what it is, we know what it is...here's our take on number 9, the "Cerberus Missile"!
-
Nice!
-
Rather like the oblong and rigid shape. 8)
-
Indeed. You guys are gonna love what's next too XD
-
What are these? Any guesses what they do?
-
Rockets? Explode?
-
Well yeah haha but dumbfire rockets do that too lol what do these do that's different? Lol
-
Mercury missiles? Flash missiles? Missiles that steal the opponent's girlfriend and leave underwear on his coffee table when company comes over? ;)
-
Max already posted the answer on Facebook...I can't say they're Merc's, but they have the same effect ;)
