Title: September 2009 Desktops
Post by: Sapphirus on August 30, 2009, 03:01:43 PM

I know, I'm 2 days early for September, but this is a jumpstart for desktops of September 2009.
Here's mine-

Your Connections icon is the Wolf's Dragoons symbol ;).

I have no idea what Desktops of September 2009 is so I'll just post mine anyway! :P

What I like doing is turning off the icons and stare into it. Pretty cool. It's one of BUBBALOU's artwork pieces. It's just amazing, to say the least.

Upgraded a bit... Now running XP over Vista. Scene is from Descent II, Quartzon ending. I might re-rip it so that the stars aren't "moving" down

Man you guys don't have anything on your desktops. Fill 'er up!

I put high priority things in the top right corner. Try finding XL on my desktop. It is purpously put somewhere where it will blend in and I can't notice it. :P

P.S. I don't play Dofus or Second Life. A couple of my friends installed them to show me what they are like. Dofus definately is not for me. Turn based whatchyamajig RPR wut?

why I don't need desktop icons (http://basementnet.dyndns.org/ryan/Kwikstrip.PNG)

Ignore those dual skulls in the first row -- that's something silly from the old days

I tend to use the desktop as a work folder... I drag everything off the internet to it then clean it up later.

For me, it's not so much the icons, but the sticky notes (the yellow boxes that sit all over my desktop). They're the only thing that's changed with my desktop, anyway, and not all that significantly.  ::)

I really like that XP theme Scyphi (though I've probably already told you that).  ;)

As for mine, the background is a Dreamscene for Vista Ultimate (though it uses a third party tool since there are a just a few Vista standard Dreamscenes), so it moves (and therefore looks really cool).

Come late october though, I should have my copy of Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit shipped to me. Windows 7 FTW!  :)

For Windows 7, you need to get this N64 game desktop. It changes game screenshots every 10 seconds or so. :D

A selection of my desktops ... in order to keep this in one post, and to keep it from going clear off the screen, I provided just links.  Enjoy!

Howdy Zantor! Good to see you dropped by! How'd you find us here?

INSERT: Some great desktops, TechPro. Good to see a fellow Linux Mint 7 user... It's one of the finest Linux distros I've seen (a free operating system that's almost as intuitive as Macintosh and three times as customizable). And that Scrat/Ubuntu wallpaper is classic! So an off-topic question: if you had to choose between Ubuntu "Jaunty" and Linux Mint 7, which would you pick?  ;)

[begin off-topic reply]

Choose between Ubuntu 9.04 "Jaunty Jackalope" or Linux Mint 7 "Gloria"?  Tough choice actually.  I only just got Linux Mint 7 and have never had the Mint flavor before.  It's actually pretty yummy.  (yes, puns intended)

Over the past several days (over a week?) in my spare time at home I've been installing different flavors and styles of Linux on a low-end "test" system.  I've played around with Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Edubuntu, Arch, Debian, Mandriva, OpenSUSE, and Mint.  Usually trying both the Gnome and KDE variations of each when available.  I don't recall having heard of Linux Mint until someone mentioned in a thread I was browsing.  Most of the things I require in a Linux box to do at the least ... Mint setup to do easily.  As for Ubuntu, there's no denying the huge communities for the different flavors which means you can usually find good answers easily.  Also, Ubuntu seems to work really well and is very stable for me.  I've had Ubuntu alongside XP on my laptop for quite a while and I can do nearly everything I need except for some Microsoft Office 2007 specific document file types ... and a number of Windows specific games (as if games were important, pffft!) because I haven't played with that area in Linux yet (if I wanna play a game, I just reboot to Windows).   Both Linux styles work well.

Alex, I'll take both OS versions for Free.

D2Junkie had a nice post here on the Linux subject ... and since this is a thread about Desktop backgrounds (and not Linux) ... I split the thread and moved the Linux conversation over to Technical.

Here's the one from my brand-spanking-new install of Ubuntu: Jaunty Jackalope. I like keeping things simple, yet unique.  ;)

It's a lot better than the industrial orange colors they give you by default (http://basementnet.dyndns.org/ryan/phpbbsmilies/icon_razz.gif)

And just for kicks here's my ubuntu virtual machine's desktop:
(http://basementnet.dyndns.org/ryan/ubuntu.PNG) (http://basementnet.dyndns.org/ryan/ubuntu.PNG)

It's still using 8.04. For the very little I use this VM it's not worth going through the download and update process

Lol. I downloaded a green GNOME theme and a cool wallpaper to get rid of the ugly diarrhea brown color of the normal theme.  ;D

I just tried out Puppy Linux (super small OS, loads entirely into a 64mb RAMDISK, super fast (because it's loaded into RAM).  Pretty cool.  I talk a bit more about it in Technical...

Anyway ... here's a screenshot.

Ah yes, Puppy. Its size is one its main selling points. My brother has taken a liking to it, mostly because of its small size and its versatility for graphic design. He had more of a liking to GrafPup, but it's not supported, and the CD images available for download are corrupt.

I still haven't changed my wallpaper. It may be the wallpaper I've had up longest this year since my reformat after trying Windows 7.

Here's a screenie from my Pentium 4 Desktop. Had Fedora KDE, but I ran into just a couple of usability issues that made it not worth my time, so I moved to CrunchBang. I'm using roughly 150MB of RAM out of 3GB to power an OS that looks rather spiffy - how cool is that?  ;)

See, that's what a clean Desktop should look like.

I'm with TechPro.  Clean/uncluttered desktops are best.  :)

I view a desktop as just that: a desktop. If you put junk all over your desktop, there's no room for work. In Windows, I hate having to click "view desktop" everytime I want to open something else. In Crunchbang, it's actually impossible to put icons on the desktop, since everything is instantly available at a simple right-click menu on the desktop. That's how much I disdain clutter.  ;D
