Welcome to PD!

There's a minimum post count of 5 posts required  (http://www.planetdescent.net/index.php?topic=8.0#msg14)before you can upload an avatar, this is a security measure. But you can still have an avatar, if you have somewhere to host it.

I can also install Avatar packs if you don't have one. Pick a pack from the SMF site. (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?action=search;type=4)

I find the reply, etc. buttons at the bottom on the default skin are somewhat small.

Fortunately, the default skin isn't the one you're stuck with. I'm personally not fond of it either.  ::)
