Title: Minecraft
Post by: SaladBadger on August 21, 2010, 11:03:47 AM
Anyone else here play minecraft (http://minecraft.net)? The free version offered on the website is just a basic creative construction game, while the paid-for alpha is a survival game in development. I've bought the alpha and it's quite a fun and addicting game.

Looks a lot like a game my kids play called 'RoBlox'.

Or Shores of Hazeron! :D

really? did they adopt a cubism mode behind my back?

:P

Looks nothing like Shores of Hazeron!

In any case, the gameplay might be comparable, but not entirely. Shores of Hazeron is more inline with a RTS where you basically have to rise up as an empire, while Minecraft is just a basic survival game (more gamemodes are planned for later though)

EDIT: (http://basementnet.us/ryan/breadaddict.png)
the joys of farming...

I am guilty of having palyed this game not that long ago. I gave it up when I realized how futile finding a good game was.

Also, what kind of cheapskate has a pay-to-play alpha?

It's actually an offer. Buy it now for cheap and you get all future releases including the final product

Ok, that sounds a little better!  ;)

Most beta tests allow free access to the final release of the game as well though...

this one does too. Provided you pay in alpha, you'll get everything without ever having to pay again.
Title: MINECRAFT
Post by: X-ray on November 25, 2010, 08:51:14 AM
minecraft is a great game but i can't really play it and there is a crap load of enemies like creepers, zombies, spiders, and skeletons.

Why can't you play it?

this thread has already been covered (http://www.planetdescent.net/index.php?topic=463.0). Merge perhaps?

Also minecraft is addicting. I've been playing for months now and have finally gotten pretty good at combat.

Agreed. Done.

Even as inexpensive as Minecraft is, I'm still too cheap to buy access to it, even if it is good for the entire lifetime of the game.

It's only going to get more expensive jake ;)
Title: Re: Minecraft

Right, but it falls in line with the idea that I don't need an account. Although it would be fun, I can just troll around until I find someone generous\bored enough to spend the ~$10 on an account, or get the account of someone who doesn't want to play anymore.

*Spazes and has a seizure*
You fool! You must get it NOW!

This is a game about fear, isolation, adventure, exploration, defeats and small rewards.

You make your own story. Literally, prepare for Descent.

it's also a game about the epic results of your broken level generator (http://basementnet.us/ryan/cubeland.png)

If you're going by the free version, don't form an opinion on it. The free version is less than 5% of what the actual game offers.

But nothing is better than running blindly into a dark cave with an armful of torches while constantly watching your back to ensure that the creeper isn't there! (And if he is there, stabbing his face with an iron sword never gets old)

@ Matt: No, I'm going off the fact that I just don't think it's the kind of game I would be interested in. :)

From what I've seen, it's very much a "Make whatever you want" type of game. There's even someone who created a model of the simple calculatio part thingie of a CPU. It worked, and was freaking large...
Over all, its a sandbox game that puts many other sandbox games to shame. The gameplay more than makes up for the basic geometry that everything is built out of.

People like making sprites from various video games like Metroid, Megaman, etc.

You can even get different looking avatars rather than your default. Mine is a poorly done Zero from Megaman X (which I am slowly modifying to look better) and Matt looks like the Borg.

Yes, NUMBERZero has been assimiliated.

PD users, are you malfunctioning?

Internal Diagnostics do not detect any malfunctioning.  Perhaps there is a problem with your systems?  ;)

Not yay, currently.

The servers are messed up, and it seems to be slower on my PC. Im sure it'll be fixed though.

Post by: SaladBadger on December 20, 2010, 08:47:50 PM
Uh, meh? It's only really just a normal update so far. It's been a while since I've played, though from the sounds of things when I make my return most of the glaring bugs should be fixed. And who knows, more features might make it in.

Notch said he might add a new mob, too.  :)

Snow fixed yet?
Title: Re: Minecraft
Post by: SaladBadger on December 21, 2010, 08:30:55 PM
Not really a "fix" more or less a "feature that needs adding". Given the way development seems to be going, it's probably going to be a bit before biome downfall is implemented.
Title: Re: Minecraft
Post by: NUMBERZero on December 22, 2010, 07:07:35 AM
It was implemented before. "Feature needs fixing to work again."
Title: Re: Minecraft
Post by: SaladBadger on December 22, 2010, 08:10:02 AM
Maybe, but I'd imagine that the implemention is going to have to be much different to work with biomes.

Oh well, meh.

My kids each got Minecraft for Christmas, early.  It's still beta. Now they are gonna play that forever.
Title: Re: Minecraft
Post by: Matthew on December 23, 2010, 07:04:33 AM
WillyP tell me you know that when you buy beta you don't get future updates?

Snow is a feature that's already added that needs fixing.

Multiplayer is essentially dead right now, because the person who makes the primary server mod that everyone uses has said he won't update it until christmas. Apparently notch dealt it out pretty rough for modders this time.

Post by: -<WillyP>- on December 23, 2010, 08:50:18 AM
I didn't buy anything, my wife did, I have no idea what the deal is. If you are going to sell a beta, it should include updates.  She doesn't know.
Title: Re: Minecraft
Post by: SaladBadger on December 23, 2010, 09:20:55 AM
Oddly enough, http://minecraft.net/copyright.jsp (http://minecraft.net/copyright.jsp) hasn't changed but it probably will sometime. The idea is that you will get future updates for free but possibly not the final game. (there's been way too many rumors about what the change actually means)

Do you seriously think that someone would be insane enough to make updates paid for a game that updates even this often?
Title: Re: Minecraft
Post by: -<WillyP>- on December 23, 2010, 02:16:09 PM
Thanks for posting that link, it sounds pretty clear to me.  They are going to include any updates to the game, but there is no guarantee the game will ever be finished.  Fair enough, since the kids are happy with the game as it is.  ;)

Nope.

craft.minestick.com

Join it. And be amazed. (Yes the spawn is a bit messed up, but walk for about 5 minutes in one direction and you'll be fine.)  ;) And the best part is, I play there!  :o
