Title: The Ascent Project - Highpoly Descent Models
Post by: TheAscentProject on July 05, 2012, 12:57:45 PM
Valhalla tower docking control to unidentified approaching vessel...

I have been a die-hard Descent'r since my childhood and, to make a long story short, thanks to projects like D2X/ReBirth I was able to relive those awesome memories. After beating both Descent I and II, I was so overtaken with nostalgia that I wanted... heck, needed to pay some form homage to these awesome games.

As a 3D artist I decided to put my skills to work and hence The Ascent Project was born as a complete remake of every single character model of the series.

It should be noted that despite having taken artistic liberties I make a point to preserve both the concept and “soul” of the original in-game models.

This project has become quite dear to me and I hope you enjoy my recreations as much as I have enjoyed making them.

I decided to start with the models from Descent II in order of appearance per the briefing screens of the campaign.

Without further ado,

Awesome! Always great to see some Descent love on dA, even more so when it's so nicely done. Really looking forward to what else you'll have to present later on. :D

Hey, me (fox) again!  Good to have you here, too.
Just a little bit curious, does the name "A Hungry Griffin" mean anything to you?  I know it's kind of an odd question...

Thank you :D - I was actually a bit hesitant to post in dA - I was an active member YEARS ago (s2f.deviantart.com) but I lost interest on the site after I started hearing about art theft and became an eventual victim of it. Seems they've done their work to address the issue though, so I took my chance. I'm still curious though - how's dA nowadays?

Hello again! No that name doesn't ring any bells... Why?

Oh, dunno, sounds like I haven't been on it as long as you have, so I don't know what things were like back then. I still hear about art theft happening occasionally, but from what I've heard, people quickly get on top of it and put and end to it sufficiently enough that the user who had their art stolen can stick around afterwards.

Hasn't happened to me as of yet, but then again, I'm not real sure my art's really worth stealing.

Well, that is good to hear. Thanks for the info.
Title: NEW MODEL UP
Post by: TheAscentProject on July 07, 2012, 01:47:08 PM
Hello everyone! New model is up - the PEST.

Hmm...not bad, but I have to admit that for the PEST, I think I like the more polygonial rigidness the original had. Yours feels just a touch too sleeked over.

But other than that, I like. :)

Hmm... That P.E.S.T. reminds me of this...

Heh, that explains why it seemed familiar in other, non-Descent, related ways. :P

Still, pretty good. :)

Nooooo, I hate pork, ham and...
Not bacon.
I definitely love bacon.
 ;D
Strange, that.
But I guess robot bacon just wouldn't be the same anyway.

 ;)

Hypocrisy! Ham is the nectar of the Gods!

Oh, and the model is pretty darn cool, too. :P

Oh my god these designs are so cool! The multiple eye lights in the PIG rustle my jimmies, I swear! That was a brilliant design choice, as well as the rest of the body. The PIG is definitely my favorite so far.

That P.I.G. looks good.

Kinda reminds me of this experimental craft, but without wings.

First things first, thank you everyone for your support! Secondly, everyone's favorite enemy: the Bandit is up!

Hmm...admittedly, I'm not sure about the Bandit...

You mean he looks a bit... off?  With the long thin arms and stuff?
I think the look makes sense, because this is thiefbot.  But we all know I'm... differently sane.
Title: Re: The Ascent Project - Highpoly Descent Models

Maybe if the arms weren't straight down.
Title: Re: The Ascent Project - Highpoly Descent Models
Post by: TechPro on July 30, 2012, 03:06:38 PM
I don't know.  At first glance I thought it was the theifbot with a surprised expression (you know, jaw dropped...).
Title: Re: The Ascent Project - Highpoly Descent Models
Post by: Scyphi on July 31, 2012, 07:04:08 AM
Heh, yeah, it kinda does... :D

But to me it just doesn't look...thief-bot enough, not enough like how it appeared in the game, so much so that if I didn't know it was supposed to be the thief-bot before looking at it, I probably wouldn't have guessed it to be it.

It's not that it's a bad design (quite the opposite) it's just not recognizable enough as the bot it's supposed to be, I guess is what I have against it.  :-\

Well, it seems that the Bandit wasn't too popular, sorry guys. It was a challenge to pull off within the scope of the project (hi-poly/realistic) and I did go overboard with the detailing but I was/am happy with how it turned out - either way, I really appreciate all for the support and feedback! On another note, I've been working on a little something for y'all, will post as soon as it's ready :)
Title: And you've caught up to me!
Post by: TheAscentProject on August 06, 2012, 07:10:38 PM
Well my friends - this is it, With more polygons than the sum of all previous models (and I don't spam turbosmooth), in the making since late February 2012, pages of sketches, and around 10GB of total content; this is the big one, the crown jewel, the flagship of the fleet (so far) - for your viewing pleasure, the Smelter!

Please visit the dA link as imgur's tiny file size (by comparison) does not do the model any justice! Over at dA not only can you see the full-resolution image, but you can also read a little piece of fan-fiction I wrote around this bot (right in the description).

Alas, here is where my weekly uploads will end as you are now caught up with me. Just a couple of weeks ago I began sketching the Diamond Claw and this week I started a new semester... I won't lie, it will be a while until the D.C. is ready... I hope you don't forget about me as I definitely will not forget about you, this project, or the awesome support I've received. Thus, here, with you all as witnesses, I promise to work on the D.C. every spare moment I get.

My friends, it's been a pleasure and, with all of me, thank you so much for all the support!

... Prepare for Descent!

PS: Hope this makes up for the Bandit!

It looks great but I'm finding it hard to recognize it as the smelter.  Maybe it's because I can't see the eye?

Oh my god the Smelter is AMAZING. The Thief Bot too.

It's hard to recognize it as the Smelter we're used to seeing, yes, but I think the design is a huge improvement over the original nonetheless. The original smelter never really looked that robot-y to me. This new design does. So it all works out for me. :D

Hello everyone, I know it has been a while but I just wanted to update you all on what I've been working on (along with many other community members): Sol Contingency, a fanmade remake of Descent that I'm sure a lot of you have heard about by now. We've officially launched our own webpage! Come check us out at www.preparefordescent.com (http://www.preparefordescent.com) where you can find a some of my conceptual work in the gallery (C2D, Small Hulk, among others) along with a Teaser trailer I created with the help of a couple of members of our team.

Nice, I really liked the Class 2 Drone. :D

The menu music they released was awesome too.  8)

Yeah, Verran did great work with the main theme.  Kudos to him for that! :)

Really like those new models too, though the proportions on the Class 2 Drone are a little different.  Not that I'm really complaining, since I sort of like the look of two units bound together (maybe "Gemini" as a sort of codename like the Descent 3 robots?).  The Small Hulk turned out really well too, and I can't wait to see the Medium Lifter or Diamond Claw when it's complete.

Great job so far, and best of luck to the entire staff on the project!

I've been pushing to have the Diamond Claw and I'd like to see maybe Gyro or Thresher as well; but right now we're inconclusive on the idea of having non-D1 bots.

I've been working a little bit on soundtrack and I might even have one song in the first episode -- maybe not recognizable as my work! -- but the things I've really been spending more time on are far subtler and less obvious, although they tie into almost every aspect of the game...
