Descent Dreams - The New Enemy Within OST
Album - Owner: Kaiaatzl - 12 items
This is the official ogg soundtrack of Descent - The Enemy Within, and it's finished now.  Find instructions for installation in this thread: http://www.planetdescent.net/index.php?topic=565.0.  It's also the official soundtrack of D2X-XL when it gets released as a standalone program (using TEW as the default mission).
All of the songs that you see here were recorded "live" on my Yamaha PSR-E403 keyboard (which I've had since about 2005).  After the recording was done on each one it was rendered, one track at a time, as a midi file.  The midi file would be then loaded into FL Studio and mastered with synths, effects, and automation.  This means among other things that midi versions of these songs already exist, though some of them admittedly sound pretty terrible compared to these versions.  Nevertheless, if you want to use the midi version of one of these songs for whatever reason, drop me a PM or an email telling me which ones and I'll get them to you.  As a warning they will probably not sound right in Descent, the tempos are higher than what's supported by the HMP format.

Penumbra Grind October 09, 2010, 07:11:56 AM 555
Theme of Level 22 - Over then Under

The song has 2 parts (kind of like the level :P), the first is more ambient, kind of like the level 22 song from Vignettes.  The second part is the meat and potatoes of the song :P.  All in all the song has a similar "alien" style to Robot Jungle from the D2 Redbook.

Technically the song could also be called "Grind in A-flat Minor".  I'll explain why:

This song is a spoof on all those classical music books that have songs named things like "Sonata in C major", and "Bouncy Waltz".  And those songs mostly do have other names (like Fur Elise, for instance).

So I made my own subgenre of Industrial (seriously!).  And I called it "Grind".  And this is the only "real" grind song (seriously!).  I'll probably do more grind in the future though.
Call of the Serpent October 09, 2010, 07:21:38 AM 573
Theme of Level 17 - Descent Dreams (the titular level for the soundtrack :P)

I'll try to make at least one other song with the word "Serpent" in the title.  Fits the mission's story.
Star Forest October 09, 2010, 07:25:27 AM 578
Theme of Level 4 - Through Broken Skies
Molten Driller October 09, 2010, 07:26:49 AM 746 2
Theme of Level 12 - And Lava runs Through It

Dedicated to the memory of the Drillers who were blown up in the Material Defender's murderous "First Strike" rampage.
We miss you, Nathan.  Come D4, we will avenge you.
Lockdown October 20, 2010, 06:57:33 AM 696
Theme of Level 8: The Flowing Trench

The level feels like a military base in lockdown, hence the song's title.  The song is a sort of Industrial-Acid with a Sci-Fi feel.  I suppose it could be considered another Grind as well.

Theme of Level 11 - Hot Stuff

Much, much better than the D3 Mercenary level 6 music.

Theme of Level 2: Winding Back

Acid synths backed by a cello, nylon guitar, electric bass, and a prominent slapped bass.  The slapped bass was something I knew since I started this soundtrack that I wanted for the level 2 music; the title is another serpent reference, though not as obvious as the level 17 song.

Pirate-y  ;).
Out of the Ashes November 05, 2010, 10:28:45 AM 613
Theme of Level 25: The Core Is The Nexus

The name is a reference to a phoenix obviously.

I'm discovering the power of the FL Blood Overdrive FX to make anything sound like an electric guitar.

Try this song in level 23 of D1 or level 17 of Vertigo.
Atlantis November 09, 2010, 10:54:57 PM 571
Theme of Level 7: Brightwater Caverns

Like Caldera Dive, this one has some (soft-)rock influence.  I've found that particular style of music to fit very well with Sirius's level design.

This song is meant to bring out the mysterious feel of Brightwater Caverns (why does the water glow?  No one knows :P).  I already used the title Aquatic Mystery, so I named this for a specific underwater mystery.

It's kind of fun to do the music for Sirius and DarkFlameWolf's levels in The Enemy Within actually.  Because they're so small and themed, it's fun to do a musical interpretation of the theme rather than the level directly.  That applies more to Caldera Dive than Atlantis though.
Clockwork November 25, 2010, 03:09:03 PM 586
Theme of Level 14: Dragnet

The name is a (very) indirect reference to what made this level so infamous; the exit run.

The style of the music itself is sort of like Descent 3 Mercenary, but more experimental.  I suppose it's also something like the level 4 music from Entropy Experiment 2.
Into Darkness November 26, 2010, 08:52:33 PM 586
Theme of Level 23: A Road that Leads

Techno-style Drum&Bass, which manages to sound playful and evil at the same time.
A very interesting song for a very interesting level.
Paradise Star November 27, 2010, 10:14:20 PM 650 2
Theme of Level 1: Itdak'maz Outpost

I didn't spell that level name myself, I copied it from the DBB  ;D.

The music feels very... paradise-ey, in a soundtrack that obviously gets darker later on.  Good mission intro music.

Actually this is a remix of Lavastar (DarkFlameWolf and Pumo might remember that name).
