Tables work fine but it's hard to see without borders. So you are right, they are useless.
edit: No, they don't work! They are not lined up correctly.
edit2: nvrm, I see what I did wrong. They do line up if you get the tags right. Added verticle 'pipe' to show where the vertical borders should be.

So all the forum does when it enounters that is shove your username and then the rest of the line into the me bbcode
