Title: D2X-XL demo mission
Post by: Kaiaatzl on October 24, 2010, 11:27:15 AM
I've been building some levels to show off D2X-XL features, I completed one of them today (it's in beta).

I used Pumo's D3 Weapons and Effects mod, and some music from my new TEW soundtrack (there's a reason I'm using music from that).
I used some textures from Irontower's pack and from DFW's D1 quake mod, and the skybox texture is from Yokellassance's Dimensional Intersect.  Because of enspiar's 500 character limit I wasn't able to give everyone credit on the mission page.

The final version will be released as a 3 level mission (this is the second level), each of which shows off some different D2X-XL features, and some of the same ones in different ways.

Since this is still beta, feel free to suggest some things to change.

Did you set the proper folders in the preferences dialog?
Title: Re: D2X-XL demo mission
Post by: Kaiaatzl on October 24, 2010, 03:38:43 PM
There was no "open" button next to any of the paths in preferences and typing the path in (or copying it from a previous version of DLE-XP) didn't do anything.
I'll post a bug report on sourceforge as soon as I can, that wasn't what this topic was meant for.

Has anyone played the level yet?  What did you think?

One might have thought you'd be glad that I am trying to help.

You need to click the "apply" button after changing a folder.

The skybox is too huge.

Sorry, I am glad you want to help, I misunderstood what you meant.  I did have trouble with the skybox, I made couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong with it, thanks for pointing it out.

Okay I think I fixed the sky now, it's not turning black at all anymore.  I'll upload a new version when I get back from church.

Was the rest of the map good?  It's your program I'm trying to show off so if there is something you don't want in there just tell me and I'll remove it.

Clicking apply in the new DLE-XP version didn't do anything either.  I'll post the bug report but I'm kind of pressed for time right now.

Alright I've updated it with the fixed skybox, I also fixed a small texture mistake I made at the start, and changed the music (now it's TEW level 8 instead of TEW level 24).

You should have a dle-xp.ini file in your dle-xp folder. Try to set the folders there.

Thanks, that fixed it.

And I have now successfully added the rain :D.

Imo your rain effect looks great!

Don't forget to add rain sound. ;) You can also make the rain fall a bit at an angle by giving the rain emitter object the proper angle.

The particle texture comes from Pumo btw.

There are more mistakes in the mission. You have been using one sky texture for all 5 visible sides of the skybox. There are however 5 different sky textures you need to use.

Really?  I did not know that.

I'll look for the other textures in DI's Gorge level.

Okay.  I'll try to get a picture of the rain effect  ;).

There is one sky texture in DI covering the entire texture area, and four that only cover half of their textures area (the other half is some brownish grey). The four half ones belong at the side walls of the skybox - upside down (DLE-XP turns them over). If you want I can send you your level with a fixed skybox.

The rain effect does look awesome... but don't forget that I made the actual level structure.  Looks like my TrackMania 2 music contribution might fit this level pretty well.

Why do you have to state that you made it? Do you believe I might take your "fame" away by posting a screenshot showing rain in your level?

Tsk.

I think it's perfectly reasonable for him to want credit for the level in the screenshot. What's unreasonable is question him about it, especially in such a hostile way.
Title: Re: D2X-XL demo mission
Post by: karx-elf-erx on October 31, 2010, 02:00:22 PM
I think it's absolutely unreasonable, since this thread is about his level all the way, and it should be clear to everybody reading it that the screenshot is from his level.

I also think it is absolutely unreasonable to suggest my post was hostile. You seem to see hostility around you pretty quickly. You may want to check your attitude in this regard. As it is now you are creating problems where there are none.

Ok everyone, I think we got that all worked out now.  Alter-Fox's level that intentionally showcases the abilities of D2X-XL which is has come about through karx11erx's efforts. They both deserve a lot of credit and both deserve recognition whenever their work appears here.

Nice effects, karx11erx.  I'm anxious to see multiple levels that make use of that.  As yet, few have had the chance to make use of it.

Alter-Fox, this demo mission looks like it's pretty cool.  I haven't seen it yet, so I just don't know yet but if it's anything like your other works, I'm sure it is good.

@Matthew... not to be an @$$, but I agree with Karx (though for a different reason).  I was a bit concerned that it was the D2X-XL FX and not my level design that was getting all the credit.  Then after I posted, I realized that I not only sounded like an insecure maniac, I remembered that the whole point of the level was to give D2X-XL all the credit.  I want to take it back and delete the post, but that would be rude to everyone who's been discussing it so I won't.

As for the new version, I've been having a couple of wierd problems.... first all the smoke objects were turned into rain.  It was easy to turn them back into smoke, but I couldn't change the colour in DLE-XP for some reason so they don't look like a noxious yellow gas anymore.
The other problem is destroying the reactor crashes D2X-XL now.  I'll download the latest version and test to see if it still happens in there (I'm using 1.15.95 right now).  If it still happens I'll post a bug report.

EDIT: It still crashes on reactor destruction in 1.15.100, I'll post a bug report tomorrow.  In the meantime I'll try to update my version of the level with a fixed skybox, and put it onto the DMDB (without rain FX yet though).

Also @Karx, how does that grey texture you used on the skybox work to make D2X-XL copy/align the skybox ceiling texture?  Are there any special things I should do to make it work for myself (for example: does it have to replace a certain texture)?

@Techpro: Wait to download till I update it, the version on DMDB right now has no rain effects and the skybox is messed up.  I'm also replacing the music again (now it's going to use a song that I'm trying to contribute to TrackMania 2 (don't tell Nadeo :P)).  Also, what do you mean by my "other works"?  This is the first level I've ever released publicly.

Fox,

changing particle fx color in DLE-XP can be a bit tricky. You need to set the desired color values and then press tab in the effects dialog repeatedly to reach some other input field, or the values will not be accepted. I am aware of this slightly weird behavior, but have been able to get around it so far, so haven't bothered trying to fix it.

I don't understand your question regarding the skybox texture. In the level I have sent you, the skybox should be properly textured with sky textures, which I have added to the level as custom textures via the texture tool's "-> edit -> load" function.

Nevermind I see now.
I was confused because I thought it was a 2-cube skybox for some reason.
It looked like the grey texture on half of each of four sides was causing D2X-XL to render the skybox cube as "unfolded".  I wanted to see if I could emulate that with my own textures.

Guess I'm pretty optimistic.  ;D  No pressure.  ;)

Either way, the screen shots (and the premise of the project) seem pretty promising to me.  And ... while this might be your first to release publicly, haven't you been involved in some of the projects?  Or is my aging memory playing tricks on me?

One of my really early (i.e. bad) levels got remade by DarkFlameWolf for TEW... and that's about it so far.

Regarding the "half" skybox textures: The textures come from a level from Yokelassence, and I don't know why they're "halves". Depending on how you place the skybox around the level half a texture is enough to produce the illusion though.

Fox,

there was a bug in DLE-XP where reactor trigger data wasn't properly saved. I am just fixing this. You will need to use DLE-XP 1.8.37 to either fix the triggers manually or have them fixed by the diagnosis function for you (which would just link the reactor to all exits in the level).

Post by: Kaiaatzl on November 01, 2010, 12:44:41 PM
And that will fix the crashing on reactor destruction?

Nice, I thought the fix would be harder (on most game engines I've tried building for [Fusion engine, Source engine] it is much harder to fix a crash).

@Foil: Just like I told Techpro, wait for me to update the level, the current version on DMDB has problems.

Well... D2X-XL has started crashing randomly (when I shoot, get a powerup, etc) so I can't test it...
I'll download the latest version, but I think the problem has more to do with a bug I tried to test recently which used to have a side effect of making the game extremely unstable for a while.  Apparently it still does...
Title: Re: D2X-XL demo mission
Post by: Kaiaatzl on November 02, 2010, 08:11:19 PM
Alright, I was able to use the Subspace cheat to make sure that reactor destruction doesn't crash the mission anymore... that's the best I can do right now.
I haven't been able to get far enough into the level to check whether everything else is working, but I don't think there should be any other problems.  I also haven't been able to test any of the secret rooms I added :(.  I suppose you'll see them in game before I do :P.
I removed the mod because it was causing problems with some powerup objects.  I also changed the music to my new song for TEW level 2: Timewinder.

I'm updating the mission on the DMDB right now.

Arrgh, DMDB is having problems updating the mission pack.  I think I've found the problem though.  Hopefully this works.

EDIT: It worked.  Mission updated.  Hopefully you won't have any problems with it.

Crap, do not download this version.  I just found out that most of the triggers are not working.  I may have found a workaround for the random crashing.
Title: Re: D2X-XL demo mission
Post by: Kaiaatzl on November 02, 2010, 08:57:25 PM
Alright, I found the problem in the level that was causing the random crashes... it was the equipment makers.  I just took them out, since they don't add that much to the level to be honest, they just feel like gimmicks.  I can also confirm that everything else actually works now (and the hostage cell looks great).

I'm updating to the working 0.8 version now.

Update successful, here's the link: http://www.enspiar.com/dmdb/viewMission.php?id=364 (http://www.enspiar.com/dmdb/viewMission.php?id=364)

Barring anything horrible, next update will probably have the other two levels.

Post by: karx-elf-erx on November 03, 2010, 01:01:28 AM
I had seen that crash once, too, and I will check what's going on there. I have a mission with equipment makers, so they really should work.

Edit:

I cannot reproduce the problem anymore, but I have nevertheless uploaded a new D2X-XL version that is more robust in regard of faulty materialization centers.
Title: Re: D2X-XL demo mission
Post by: Kaiaatzl on November 03, 2010, 06:17:12 AM
Thanks.

I looked at the version history and that's exactly the problem I was having (the equip maker started spawning laser shots, which crashed the game).

BTW - there's one trick (puzzle, trap?) in this level that you can definitely expect me to pull again.  The door to the hostage cell is behind a locked secret door in the reactor area... if you come to it and it's still locked then it's too late to unlock it (you need to hit a trigger earlier in the level).  This is something I like to do with a lot of valuable secrets (to increase replay value I guess).

I'm working on the level that will be first in the mission, and I have it more than half done.  The level will be called 7-UP (you'll see why).  It follows the TEW/Vignettes concept: small and following a theme.

Right now it feels a bit too easy, even for a starting level, so I'm going to probably change some robots once the structure is done (and maybe I'll add some Smelter IIs).

I think it'll have the TEW level 13 music, because that song fits a bubbly drink about as well as it fits diving into a volcano.

"7-up" is finished, it's a water themed level but the water looks like 7-up :D.  I'll post some screens when I get home.

I'm almost ready to release the full mission (7 levels, + briefing).  Storywise it's a prequel to Operation Otter (you play as the same pilot, though you won't find out his real name until Operation Otter).  Music is a combination of some of my older and newer songs (and the boss music is the non-final-boss level music from Operation Otter).

It will include the level I've already released, the level that I've just finished, and several "Oldie but goodie" D2X-XL levels I made a couple of years ago (just after the release of TEW).  4 of the levels are very small, but the other 3 are enormous.
