DescentiaPedia, The Descent Guides Project Forum, as well as all the static pages at Prepare For Descent will be moving to Planet Descent. There is no timeline for this move, but it will be soon. Watch this thread for further news.
Ultimately, the goal is to merge the sites. Tiny portal has a nice article system and all the pages from DescentiaPedia will become articles. Threads from The Descent Guides Forum may become articles or perhaps the will be merged with the Planet Descent forum.
This is something I have been considering for some time. However, the domain registration is up for renewal shortly so I have decided not to renew it at this time.
-
Wow, that is awesome - I didn't even know it existed.
Good luck with the organise. These things are always time-consuming but I'm sure a lot people will be very interested to see the outcome.
-
Oh hey, that's actually a really good idea! Will keep tabs on your progress, then. :)
-
So many broken links... Oh the nightmare.
-
Part of the reason I think the move is a good idea; it'll help sort out some of those issues in the process.
-
I have no objections, if fact I think it's a great idea. :)
-
I didn't even know about that place, but it sounds sweet!
-
Consolidation = less maintenance. Should be good!
-
The domain expired at prepare4descent.net. The Descent Guides Project Forum is up at prepare4descent.planetdescent.net/guidesforum/ (http://prepare4descent.planetdescent.net/guidesforum/) temporarily. Expect broken links until I fix them. I'll move DescentiaPedia soon.
-
Internal broken links are easy to fix (You should be using relative links anyway, imo...) but you can't fix all the links to your site from other sites and posts.
-
Unfortunately, that can't be helped.
-
hmm, posts ... you could maybe download the database and do a find-and-replace for the root directory/domain name in Notepad.
I've never tried that before but for God's sake, if you do try it, keep a copy of the original database the way it was, in case.
It's a bit of a hair-brained idea but ...
-
Everything needs to be copied to the article system here anyway. So any outbound links will be fixed then.
-
where is this smf update? is this going to be updated with the prepare4descent site?
-
Oh, thanks for reminding me I need to post an announcement about the upgrade here. No, P4d will not be upgraded at that time, it will stay with SMF1.x. The idea is to extract all the useful articles and copy them to here. If that ever gets finished the p4d forum can be deleted. And the same with DescentiaPedia.
There is no need for three places of this information.
-
Glad to see it lives. ;D

Outbound links shouldn't need fixing. The inbound links are the problem. Every link to prepare4descent.net will break :(
-
You are right, I meant internal links.
-
now all we need is an email address here. Vanguard@planetdescent.net
nice :)
so yes, an email address ;) ;) ;) ;) ;)
-
imo I think p4d.planetdescent.net sounds better. The other domain is just too long. I always try to use abbreviations for subdomains but maybe that's just me.
-
then it should be p4d.pd.net, right? ;D
-
I sort of like p4d.pd.net. It is fast to say, rolls off the tongue, and all it is are simple letters.
-
Not me, I'd probably get tongue tied with all those P's and D's. :P
-
I'm having trouble having it roll off my tongue, see ~~~> :P
pd.net sure does. the p4d doesn't for some reason. i think it's the "4" that seems to be the break.
p.o.d. does, but maybe I'm used to saying c.o.d.
p.f.d.? prepare for descent.
pfd.pd.net?
wait, we are still going to be planetdescent.net though. right?
why the talk about domain names or is someone just thinking what sounds nice?
-
I was wondering why the subject came up, but I wasn't sure how to mention it. :P
I like pfd.pd.net better. :)
-
I am not registering any more domains, people are just talking. I highly doubt you could get any two or three letter domains*, but of course a sub-domain can be anything. But, no I am not going to move it again.
*I mean, at a reasonable price.
-
this domain name is fine. I kind of figured people were 'just talking', but sometimes I feel left in the dark.

One last nit-pick and I promise I'm done. If a site is set up properly, moving domains shouldn't be much work. Relative links are a wonderful thing. Then again, I'm not on the SMF dev team and I've never set up SMF so I don't know how "logically" they designed it in this regard.
Ok I'm done now.
(But you could make a redirect at least from p4d....net to prepare4descent....net without breaking anything?)
(Ok I'm really done now)
(Yes, really)
-
Would it be a good idea to include p4d in some section in the "Reactor" area?
-
Guys, I'm sure WillyP has this all figured out already. ;)
-
SMF uses relative links, so that is all set. Links that are broken are ones I hardcoded in, like in the header a link back to the home page, which I already fixed, the home page has links to the Guides Forum which I haven't fixed yet and I haven't reinstalled DescentiaPedia yet so that link is also broken. The links to images are also broken... etc. Within the guides there may be a few links that people posted that are broke. I didn't say all the links are broken, just that there are some. I'll fix them as I have time. But it is not a high priority right now. And you are right, moving to another domain isn't hard, it is just a matter of ftp'ing the files to a new domain, fixing hard coded links, running a script in the forum to change settings, and fixing a few setting the script doesn't get to. But, no reason to. It's done, once is enough. ;) And there is no prepare4descent.net to redirect to.
Alieo, Reactor is a fan fiction site, so I don't think material from P4D would fit there.
-
And there is no prepare4descent.net to redirect to.
I mean redirect p4d.planetdescent.net to prepare4descent.planetdescent.net. The ... was supposed to represent the planetdescent part because the whole thing is a handful to type out.
-
It will be gone soon enough anyway. ;)
-
... Brushes aside a little dust ...
So, how's the P4D move going? I see it's at the http://prepare4descent.planetdescent.net (http://prepare4descent.planetdescent.net) path, and the Descent Guides forum (which could use more guides) is sitting at http://prepare4descent.planetdescent.net/guidesforum (http://prepare4descent.planetdescent.net/guidesforum) ... but I'm not seeing any links or anything that takes you there unless someone knows the path.
Just wondering.
-
The idea of putting it up there was so we could copy it to the article system here, so I need to turn that on an provide a link to it. There still are some bugs in the article system and I was hoping for a fix but I will probably enable it soon as is.
-
I'm looking forward to it. I can't help but think about all the new vistas it might open up, buggy or not. :D
-
Ok, I'll get on it! :o
