Happy New Year! Post yer desktops for 2012!
************
In my Mario Maps monthly wallpapers, Luigi leaves behind Mario and returns to World 1, Cold Frontier. I'm going to post 2011's Cold Frontier map so you can compare it to the new 2012 map.
Improvements:
- Warp pipe architecture more "realistic" and not SMB3 map-like anymore.
- Character avatar downsized.
- Inventory better organized.
- File name removed from inventory box.
- Improved Koopa Kid avatars.
- Better icon integration into maps.
Coming Soon:
- Updated character and enemy avatars... upgrading from SMB3 avatars to Mario & Luigi: Super Star Saga avatars. (SMB3 map layout will remain the same.)

Ta-daa!

And... continuing on with the Desktops of 2012 ...
Here's what I put up on my work Win7 system. I'm kind of liking it. Easy on the eyes.
Yes, that is the Trashcan that's sitting in the Taskbar.

Argh! Can't decide which one to use (both really nice).

I'd go with the lighning, meself... the other one would bug me no end ;)

Ya gotta admit, that bug looks cool.

I just got a hilariously evil idea. Post a desktop background that's super awesome, and is animated so it has a bug crawling randomly across it periodically. But don't tell the downloaders that ;)

Not all that hard (but I ain't gonna do it), especially thanks to what used to be called "Active Desktop" in the Windows 95 days. You simply put active web content on your desktop and ... presto! -- However, it's pretty well avoided these days due to overhead and the fact that the desktop would be acting as a constant (and active) web browser. Not exactly a very secure approach.
Another way (not so easy, but doable) is a custom desktop widget that moves around the screen instead of being locked to the "sidebar" (as it's called in Windows Vista). The weather and time widget you see in my desktop screenshots is a desktop widget, but it isn't programmed to move around on the screen.
-
As I recall, it isn't possible to activate Active Desktop anymore, and while I'm pretty sure that .gifs won't animate if put on the desktop, it doesn't matter because Windows 7 decides that it has to convert every image you set as your background to .jpg (I don't know why they would ever do this, but it's pretty easy to work around if you know your registry-fu. Earlier versions, such as Windows XP, would keep the native format if it could, and convert it (to .BMP) if it couldn't support it (ie: .PNG). I'm surprised that Windows 7 still doesn't have native support for .png backgrounds, heh)
I think have seen some people work around the lack of animated desktops, however, by telling Windows to pull the backgrounds in a folder with all the individual frames of animation, and they'd set the computer to switch backgrounds rapidly. This sounds extremely space-inefficient on longer animations, though.

Luigi finishes off Lemmy Koopa in the World 1 Airship and lands it just shy of the start panel of World 2's Cupid Clouds.
Happy Groundhog Day everyone! I don't care if he sees his shadow or not, because it's 80 degrees here! WOOH! I remember last year on Feb. 1, it was 27 degrees. We're definitely having a MUCH milder winter than last year, and I am GLAD!

New desktop. Anybody here remember Commander Keen? :D

I do! ;D

Commander Keen is not forgotten in my home (see attached pic). 8)

Luigi made it through the frozen "Cold Frontier" and experienced acrophobia up high in the Cupid Clouds to make it here, today, to Clover Fields.

... and I've changed it again. Original available here (http://interfacelift.com/wallpaper/details/2874/la_mar_lamora.html)
/me wonders if he's changing it too often...
-
Changed my desktop again, but stuck to the same theme, so it's actually not that big of a change. :P
-
I decided that I should look at my art more often, even if it is silly sometimes, or not great quality-wise.

You can get a super high resolution version here (http://basementnet.us/ryan/coloredpencilfairy.jpg) if you're so inclined.
I had to download a custom utility from Sourceforge to capture this, though. Seems I hit some sort of limit with the Window's screenshot function, so I can't actually get my images into any utilities. Besides, I wanted to capture only one monitor.

This one was just too nice to ignore...

Mario Maps for April 2012:
World 4 - Voodoo Bayou
Last year, Voodoo Bayou was the May map, and was called "Crawdad Bayou."
MAJOR changes in store with this map:
-eliminated information box in the upper left hand of the map. Now, each information item has it's own sign.
-World identifiers now appear in HDTV looking monitors with a fancy schmancy little logo.
-The "World 4-X" signage is on a wooden post.
-Month signage is on a wooden post
-Coin and crystal counts appear on HDTVs.
-Those mini-dimensional relay tubes that my former avatar NOK was in now houses inventory such as keys, hammers, and bombs, etc.
-High resolution buildings and signs.
I went back and took out the old information box from this map after it was created; a sort of "retro-fitting" if you will. I retro-fitted the maps I've already made, which is April through September. Starting with October's map, these information signs and inventory tubes will be scattered elsewhere throughout the map.

New desktop, one of those that I couldn't fight the temptation on.
My only problem with it is that I'm not used to the white background. And since I'm running Windows 7 with the see-through task bar, it makes that task bar look like it's glowing in the dark when running other programs. :P

Mario Maps for May 2012:
World 5 - Floral Banks
Because April showers bring May flowers, right? This one is themed with a bunch of little flowers doing different things. Look closely at the individual flowers' facial expressions and various activities.
Last year, the Floral Banks map was used for World 4, "Dreamy Woods" in April 2011. The old map led to the swamp map last year, but those areas have been edited for the flow of things this year. Compare the differences below.
Also, we see a familiar face. Our good 'ol friend NOK is being held captive by Iggy Koopa! Can Luigi save NOK? What happens if he can't? Are there even enough orbs to defeat Iggy?

After Iggy Koopa killed Luigi at the end of World 5, "Floral Banks" and took his body to World 6, "Dimension-X," NOK's home, NOK emerged in his own dimension to help rescue Luigi just as Luigi tried to rescue NOK from Floral Banks. NOK successfully defeated Iggy Koopa in Dimension-X, and also located a 1UP that brought Luigi back to life.
With Iggy defeated, Luigi bids NOK farewell as he travels on to World 7, "Palm Cove" to face evil pirates, sunbathing goombas, and the guardian of the desert world, the sadistic Wendy O. Koopa! "I'm not sadistic," said Wendy O. in an interview, "I just like to have fun!" When Luigi was asked what he thought of Wendy's tyrannic rule over Palm Cove, he replied, "Kinky!"
+++
New Stuff for World 7:
- Swimsuit Power-up!
- Palm Express Sailboats: Used to travel around Palm Cove. Luigi must collect corresponding colored palm coins and ride the boat that bears the symbol of that coin. Last year, Mario pranced around Palm cove with an Ice Flower power up freezing the ocean as he crossed it leaving the island looking ugly at the end. (See Pic #3)
- Fancy new aquatic castle
- Arrrrrgh! A pirate ship!

Luigi ventures southwest from Palm Cove to World 8: Camel Sandhills. This will be the last of the enlarged overpixelated 16x16 converted into 32x32pixel tiles. You've slowly seen details such as flora, bridges and buildings gain finer detail over time. Next month, the whole land tiles get finer tuned into true 32x32 pixel tiles.

Luigi completes the Camel Sandhills defeating Morton Koopa and destroying the Koopa's Grand White Pyramid. He heads onward to the underground paradise of Caprice Caverns in World 9.
From here on forward, the Mario Maps will feature sharpened graphics with completely recreated land tiles. They will no longer have that pixelated 16-bit look, and now take on a sharpened 32-bit appearance. All sprites seen here were completely remade manually by me. Compare the August map with the September map and notice the detailed improvements.

Interesting, but just note that on Windows 7 you don't need any extra program like Background Switcher, as Win7 already includes a function to switch wallpapers every <insert desired time here> seconds/minutes. ;)
Anyway, I liked pretty much the second wallpaper (the GLaDOS one), and I'm curious, where did you found it?
EDIT: Nevermind, I Just found the GLaDOS wallpaper on DeviantArt. ;D

Indeed, I make gratuitous use of this function. I just wish windows had better multi-monitor support.

Like... How better? (Asks a daily Win7 multi-monitor user)
-
The ability to full-screen an application on one monitor and still be able to use the other monitor. The ability to have different desktop backgrounds. The ability to have a separate taskbar for each. etc, etc.
-
Well, OK, I'll give you some of that one. ... but the first item you can do in Win7, it just takes too many steps.
EDIT: Oh wait, you're talking about running something like Descent in full screen on one monitor, but want to still be able to use the other monitor at the same time. ... Sorry. Can't do that one, and it isn't Win7’s fault. It's a limitation of the design of the full screen app. Don't blame the OS for that.
However there is a non-MS app that does the second and third items (and much more goodness). DisplayFusion (http://www.displayfusion.com/) is a terrific program I highly recommend. Offered in Free or Pro versions (Free doesn't allow all features).
I use it in Free version and enjoy it mostly for having a simple keystroke to full-screen snap the current app to whichever screen I wish (worth installing just for that). I personally don't really care about the many other features it does, but I highly recommend you check it out.

Shouldn't need to install a program to add functionality that should've been included in the OS from the start.
-
Every feature of Windows was originally a separate program.
-
Further supporting my statement that it should be built into windows.
-
They can't think to include everything in every program they build, nor can they afford to. For all you know, there could be a very legitimate reason why Windows excluded such things.
-
Shouldn't need to install a program to add functionality that should've been included in the OS from the start.
That's easy to say, but is complete "bunk" (false/incorrect/bull/etc.). No offense.
There has never been an OS that didn't do what you have stated they should not. In every OS (any OS of which there has been multiple versions) the OS makers built-in what options/features they felt would be good and useful but cannot think/imagine all of the options and abilities that users might think of. There may also be limitations to what can be done at that time. Then, with the next versions they build in better and/or more features and abilities, many of which are often available as separate programs/add-ons that others came up with originally. This is true of all versions of Windows, all versions of Apple OS (anyone here remember using that?), all versions of Mac OS, and especially with all versions Linux. The list goes on.
Just because you or I think it was logical and should not have been left out, does not make it a reason that "it should have been there from the start". That's akin to saying the OS developers should have better than 20/20 vision of what users will want and need.
Again, no offense meant. If my comments are offensive to you, my deepest apologies.
-
They can't think to include everything in every program they build, nor can they afford to. For all you know, there could be a very legitimate reason why Windows excluded such things.
Microsoft? Have legitimate reasons? Never!

It's better to respond with vague metaphors. If you were saying, for example, that you want the people making computer chips to have the eyes of falcons and the hands of racoons so they can assemble components tinier than anyone can imagine, you haven't thought it through. If you were able to give someone those abilities, you'd probably much rather give them to yourself than some random stranger who makes computer chips.
-
Those kinds of programs have been around for years though, it's not like I'm just out of the blue saying "OMG Y U SO DUMB Y U NO ADD DIS BY NOW?" As for cost... That's not a legitimate excuse for one of the world's largest software developers, at least not for something so minor in the grand scheme of things.
Not that it really matters anymore, now that microsoft has decided desktops are old-fashioned.

The observant Whovian will notice that my Vortex shortcut now has some sort of referential significance, though you may have to go to the gallery page to view the image full-size in order to make it out... Technically it's a reference to a specific episode but I wouldn't expect anyone who isn't a conspecific (or even a conpersonic, for that matter) to get that. But if you can correctly tell me which specific episode it is you get some sort of nonexistant prize.
-
I know roughly what you're referring with that, but no, I can't name a specific episode with it per say.

December 2012 Wallpaper
World 12: Chronepoch Temple
>> This would normally be a winter-themed world, but with the Mayan end-date approaching, I created this "alternate dimension" world that contains the elements of earth, air, fire, water, spirit and time. The levels are in roman numerals and there are only 21 of them because if the world ends, well, then this is it. However, if we are all here December 22nd, there's the traditional "Winter Wonderland" map that will be posted afterwards.
Edit: Well, apparently it won't let me upload the .PNG file because it's 922kb. I don't get it seeing as all the others I've posted were always the same dimensions as this one, but oh well... here's a link: http://texace146.deviantart.com/#/d5n0hg6 (http://texace146.deviantart.com/#/d5n0hg6)

Also, I'm currently working on building a new map for World 5 from scratch. If you've ever played Super Mario Bros. 3 before, you'll see a very familiar layout in the northwest portion of the map as a tribute to the original World 1.
