The new PD contest is a two part contest...
Take this image and alter it. Then write a short story around it!

What is going on in this pic? Well, it's really a jet aircraft leaving an airport at sunrise... but with a little imagination and digital manipulation it could be a Pyro leaving a mine after blowing the reactor, or it could be... well, I'll leave that to you! ;)
What should the story be about? It doesn't have to take place in the Descent world, although it would be great if it did.
You are welcome to collaborate with others, in fact encouraged...
Entries can be pm'd to WillyP or TechPro. Stories must not be published prior to the deadline. The deadline for entries is February 14. The winner will receive a digital trophy in a custom made level.
-
Mine blends 4 worlds together including a little Descent :P.
I'm done.
-
Wow, that was quick!
-
How about this?
"Nice picture"
:)
-
Thomas, you've done a fine job altering the picture, I hardly recognize it. And your story had me on the edge of my seat, all the way through, both words. ;)
However, I regret having to tell you this, but your entry is hereby disqualified, as you are in violation of this rule: "Stories must not be published prior to the deadline."
You may, of course, submit another entry.
-
Ok, I have to take it obviously: I didn't win. ;)
Did NumberZero win again?
Where's his story, and was it better than mine?
-
here's my entry

-
Ew must escapes out of here fastly!
-
Hehe. You're disqualified now because you violated the rule not to disclose your story before the deadline. ;D
-
You can disclose the story without publishing it... The idea, is to have people write a new story, not rehash one that's been published elsewhere.
Maybe that's just a teaser...
one can hope...
-
Ok, I have to take it obviously: I didn't win. ;)

Where's his story, and was it better than mine?
The deadline is still a ways off, no one has won yet.
-
Maybe that's just a teaser...
It looks more like something for Christie's.
-
Here are a few questions.
1) If this is the "January 2010 Descent Contest," why is the deadline in February? I don't think it takes that long to photoshop this picture.
2) Who is making somethin and who is done?
I was done about 2 days after this was announced.
If everyone who wants to be in and is done, can we set the deadline to this month?
-
The 'shop work is only part of it... write a story!
-
*just now reads reply*
Done.
-
It's February already.
Who won?
I also would like to request to see the winner picture and story too. I still can't imagine that there's any story better than mine. ;D
-
It was me, WillyP went crazy over the storyline
-
I haven't received either of your stories.
-
I posted my story here but got disqualified for releasing it too early.
Wait a minute...
Does that mean this contest was again a mock-up game and NZ has won already before it even started? ;D
-
No, I haven't received anything from NZ, or anyone else for that matter. Maybe he submitted it to someone else. Also, Thomas, you are not disqualified, but your story consisting of a smiley and two words is.
C'mon people let's have some good writing! The deadline is still 9 days away!

-
I don't quite understand.
Does that mean that no one's submitted anything?? Everybody was just bragging around here??
Not even NZ?
Boys, boys, you got no chance. I'm going to win that beer!
-
I just noticed, the airport in that pic looks like Denver International. Am I correct?
-

-
I was just holding onto my stuff incase it needed tweaking. I sent everything over to WillyP now.
-
I think I've found enough time to start workin' on this...
... Now I just want some competition. ;D
-

Good call, Foil!
i've recieved NZ's entry... It's pretty darn good! (although there is some room for improvement... the ending is a little short.)
-
I don't know any type of advanced photoshopping techniques. The most advanced thing in my book that I just found out about was that you can click and drag each individual corner on a pic and slant it.
Story's short because I told it up to the point of the scene. BTW, I forgot to mention that there is music that you are supposed to be listening to while you look. That will go in the files section too.
-

So somebody other than me, Techpro, and Foil actually DOES visit that site! :P
-
I do. In fact, I tried to register a couple of times but could never log in. I would say I have read around 90%.
BTW, I forgot to mention that there is music that you are supposed to be listening to while you look. That will go in the files section too.
Hold off on that, I have something else in mind... ;)
Story's short because I told it up to the point of the scene.
Just seems, the story is going along pretty good, then the last sentence comes along and you didn't want to write anymore so you wrapped it all up in one sentence.
-
Is it too late to tweak it a little?
If not, I want to try to think of an 11th referance. ;)
-
No, it's not too late. The deadline for the contest is the 14th.
-
Uber story has now been sent. :)
-
...and received. Thank you!
-
Ok, now that it is not 1:30 in the morning, I will be modifying i the one that I just sent to include more details and fill in a couple of holes.
-
The deadline is nearing... So far, the only entry I've received is NUMBERZero's. Anyone else?
-
I can't see why this is an issue.
He would have won anyway. ;)
-
That's quitter talk.
-
Thomas, why do you think NUMBERZero has a better chance than anyone else? I'm a little offended, If that what you think. I can assure you, NZ was not pre-picked to win. There is still time if you want to enter. For all I know, there could be other entrants just waiting until the last moment to submit.
-
You guys are really missing out on something big.
-
You guys are really missing out on something big.
IDK man, getting a level made trophy doesn't really make me wanna do things that require thinking and effort
8) heh
-
That's not it...
-
That's not it...
enlighten me
-
Well, it is the 14nth, all will be clear soon.
One last try before I close this out and fufill Tomas' prophecy... anyone?
Bueller?... Bueller?
-
I was going to do one, but then I honestly just stopped caring
-
Once again, that's quitter talk. It's NOT that complicated to do.
-
yes it may not be hard. I do have a photoshop finished
but that doesn't explain what the point is
-
The point is to participate, have some fun, friendly competition. Create something others will appreciate. If you prefer not to, though, no one will think less of you. There is no obligation.
And true, a custom level may not be as motivating, as say a new gaming rig or even a video card, but the prize is not the point. If you would only write a story for the sake of getting some cool, monetarily valuble prize, then you are missing the point and I don't think I can explain further. Maybe someone could write a soupe on the subject. ;)
-
I just realized how horribly I misphrased things. It's mostly just a lack of interest in certain things that made me pull my submission (that has nothing to do with the prize i'd be getting)
-
I seriously wonder how many new levels you have on hand, WillyP. ;-)
-
I hear you, IB. No prob.
Thomas, I have dozens of levels I have started and not finished or just made to try stuff out. But this level I'll start from scratch. The only thing I copied from another level for 'Trophy' were the tube lights in the hallways.
I'm think of making this one an outdoor level, with a half shell in the middle.
