What is that as wall paper? Some kind of torture chamber, no doubt!  ;) Hey, I tried to play Nexiuz, but it did not play well for me. How does it work for you?

Its a CTF map for Flight Back, so i guess you could call it a torture chamber!  :P

Nexuiz works great for me.

My desktop PC desktop hasn't changed at all, but here's my Windows 7 destkop, from my ACER Tablet PC
(http://basementnet.dyndns.org/ryan/tabletdesktopthumb.png) (http://basementnet.dyndns.org/ryan/tabletdesktop.png)

I highly tricked out this install of Windows 7, managing to disable the feature where dragging a window to the top of the screen maximizes it, dragging it to an edge of the screen makes it fill up that edge, and the feature where dragging a maximized window unmaximizes it. The colors were all manually set via the registry (because the color editing dialog is crap and doesn't get the colors I want), complete with the two-pixel wide highlight feature (I think it looks cool). I'm probably going to use a shell replacement at some point as I absolutly hate 7's explorer

I'm floored, Insanity. I have Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit on my laptop and I have nothing but praise for the new GUI. The reworked taskbar is as functional as it is slick. The new Aero snap feature to maximize the window or half-screen-size the window when it's dragged to the top or to the sides respectively is an absolute joy when you have to compare two windows regularly (such as at school - powerpoint on one window, my notes on the other). Aero peek and shake are also very easy to use and rather useful. I love it.

Wait, there's going to be a free release of Mechwarrior 4?

It's amazing what you might find when you've been out working your fingers to the bone on finals for a couple of weeks and decide to hit up your favorite forum.  ;D

Oh, and here's my desktop for the time being on my laptop. Fresh install of Windows 7 64-bit Home Premium, I might add. (Thanks, ASUS!)

I'm sure my kids would like that game so I took a look. I'm still not clear whether this is a mod and you still will need to buy the game, or a download to play online. I didn't see any hardware requirements either.

Requirements should be similar to those for Descent 3. I'm guessing anything PIII 500MHz or higher would run it just fine. So basically anything this decade should work for you.  :)

Cool! My kids will love that. the kid's machine is not too bad with D3, a little stuttery under heavy load due to onboard video.

Gee, I think this thread has been derailed. /me  pushes the thread back on track.

I could use a little help getting the text right for this. I think I still have the PSD floating around; it's a game screen shot with text on a layer added to it.

What do you want to do with the text?
Title: Re: November + December Desktops.
Post by: Zantor on December 30, 2009, 09:22:49 AM
Make it stand out properly and look right. I was told not to do text straight on a textured background, but to do something to make it stand out. I use Photoshop 7.

Try outlining the text with a contrasting border, dark gray or off white.

Shadow effects can work as well.

Indeed.  I'm guessing that shadow effects may look the best.

Look at the logo for the Blue Christmas theme, I did that in the Gimp. Some texture for "Planet Descent", then Xach-Effect to give the chiseled look. Then shadow.

This isn't a full game. It requires Crysis.exe to run. It's a mod for Crysis.

As far as I can tell it is yet to be released. It is supposed to be provided by MekTek.net (http://www.mektek.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=138822) and by distributed by BattleTech.com (http://battletech.catalystgamelabs.com/2009/07/09/mechwarrior-to-be-distributed-free-on-battletech-com/)

Enough derailing the thread! This is not where you guys should talk about Mechwarrior!

I think I'll do a drop shadow; I'll tweak it to get it to look right. Thank you for your input.

Interesting. I gotcha now.

BTW: I was the one to change the sign for humor's sake. I take it my attempt failed.  ;)

I think we need to start a January Desktop now that it's halfway through January.

lol... The first is placed between some rolling stock on a siding and the mainline. If for some reason the cars start rolling they will become derailed before rolling out onto the mainline.

I believe it's called thread hijacking
Title: Re: November + December Desktops.
Post by: The Chief on January 15, 2010, 04:53:35 PM
I wouldn't say that, the conversation has simply wandered off track. A thread-jacking would be when, for example, a topic is started to ask advice on a crashed harddrive and someone is helping them, all of a sudden someone else comes in and starts relating there problem with a harddrive. It may be a sound like the same problem but they are taking away from the help the OP would be getting, and possibly confusing the people who are trying to help.

I stand corrected
Title: Re: November + December Desktops.
Post by: -<WillyP>- on January 16, 2010, 06:00:58 AM
Well, it's a fine line... posting a pic and asking for help with it is a bit off topic, might be considered thread jacking... but if he is planning to use it for a wallpaper maybe it's on topic. And as they say, 'no harm, no foul'.
Title: Re: November + December Desktops.
Post by: D2Disciple on January 16, 2010, 08:36:54 AM
And besides: thread derailment is a tradition at PD.  ;D

But seriously: don't hesitate to realign the thread if it's going way off track. I don't think anyone here had the intention of being unhelpful or ignorant, Zantor. My apologies.  :)
