Title: D2 Level 1 Portal 2 Version (IMG Heavy)
Post by: Ronin RedFox on May 16, 2012, 08:38:31 AM
I know we have some Portal junkies in here, so I thought those people would find this interesting.  :)

Recently I was challenged by NUMBERZero to make Descent 2 Level 1 in Portal 2.

I thought "If the early descent levels were made with cubes, then I can make it in Portal 2!" so I took the challenge.

For the most part, I have all the level designed, but probably since I tried to make it in 1:1 scale, I cannot fit the whole level. (The Portal 2 Level editor has a size restriction.)

Really all that's left is to make it a puzzle.

I might have it released sometime today, or tommorow, because there's not much left to do.

Here are some screenshots to tie you over for now (May not be Final):

Hopefully you can recognize stuff a little, I'm not the best map maker out there, but I think it's close enough. :P

I would've normally put all those in a spoiler, but I don't believe we have those here.. Oh well.

No. It's all work I did on my own, constructed entirely from memory.

Darc, you've changed your display name again!??!
It's like, every time you come back here you start over.

I'm currently recreating 2Fort for Descent 2 (but that's another subject)

Might be done tommorow. Was testing the test earlier and all was well until near the end, I died randomly. I have to figure out why. Lol (Seemed like an engine issue, I pulled a turret through a portal and it dissapeared, and shortly after I died.)

But the good news is, that it's turning out to be a generally challenging puzzle. You'll need to keep all of your cubes throughout the whole puzzle. If you lose any.. Well. Too bad, start over. :P

A truly good designer would make sure you couldn't loose any of those cubes for good.

Darcshadow?  Mr Fancy Floof?  You know him right.

When I changed my name during the hackers thing it was with a good reason, and I just decided I liked it better than Alter-Fox.  But I only changed it once.  In-game, that's a completely separate topic.  But the Fearrets are great.

A truly good player wold make sure you wouldn't loose any of those cubes for good. :3

But if I really must, I'll add dispensers or something. It might be a good idea so people don't get angry at me.

Aw man, the one time I have to forgo visiting PD for a few days so to focus on homework, THIS pops up.  ::)

Looks great, can't wait to play it.  8)

For that matter, can't wait to try the editor for myself yet (another thing I've had to put off because of homework).

If this works out, we'll have to see if there are any other Descent levels we can recreate(ish) in Portal 2. Personally, I'd love to see D1, level 1, in Portal 2 next. :D

Sorry it's taking a while to complete this. I've completely redesigned the puzzle aspect of the level, also life and stuff is getting in the way. Expect it later this week, perhapsley.

And sure. I could definitely try D1 Level 1. I really wish that the In-game editor could do slopes and such, that'd really help in the construction of levels. Maybe it does and I just don't know how.. Oh well.

That's part of the reason why I thought of D1 level 1, because it's more boxy than D2 level 2.

Anyway, I was thinking about it, and decided that if you don't do D1 level 1, I'll try and find time to do it next time I get the chance. With the Portal 2 editor, I don't think it'll be too hard (if only building REAL Descent levels was this easy).

It's not much harder honestly.
I was very surprised how they designed the editor so it almost feels like building a Descent level with cubes and whatnot.

Yeah, it does give those of us already experienced there a bit of a leg up. :D

But seriously, this new editor almost makes it too easy. I think I could easily make a fully functional, complex, test chamber in one day if I could spare the time. Could never do that with Descent.

But of course, Descent has more complicated details to keep into consideration. Portal is more straightforward. And even boxier.

Yeah, It's much easier. Anyone could do it.

The only thing about it is that you can't make a full sized level like what you would see in the campaign. It has boundaries. (I've not counted how many blocks you are allowed though.)
