I want to see what the best two symbols are, coming from long-time Descenters.
Be honest about it.
I expect that the Shield will get the highest, but I have it there for a reason.
MASSIVE EDIT: I know this is kind of late, and I made it some time ago, and it's kind of crappy (because of a lack of even frames), but here it is:

I think the shield orb is a bit over done.
Even since I first saw it, I have always liked the Invulnerability Orb. That is the one power up that has always excited me the most, and (in my opinion) the best looking power up.
-
Eh, true, but the shield is Descent's trademark symbol, the thing you like at and immediately think "Descent".
Kind of like how the Starfleet insignia is Star Trek's symbol?
-
It's gotta be the orb. I've always liked the way it looks, particularly some of the fan-made versions.
-
The shield orb because it's the "official" symbol, and the cloaking device.
When I first played D1 that was the coolest looking powerup I had ever seen, and its effect was even cooler. Too bad D3 ruined the purple orb's animation...

Yeah, the coak was ruined in D3. The invun was still cool looking, though. They also ruined the shield. It was just a randomly rotating orb rather than a blue sphere with an electrical arc going from bottom to top.
I voted the Shield and the Ex-Life. The Ex-Life because it is unique among all games featuring one. Most games just had a downsized version of your sprite ('cause most where 2D back in the day) or some other similar item, like Mario's mushroom. Descent on the other hand had a ship in a sort of containment sphere. You could almost call it a zero-point reconstruction module, which is what I call it 8). It was almost as if there was some sort of theoretical science behind it. Much more realistic than a shroom or a hedgehog head.

Voted for Extra Life and Cloak...
Extra life: I'm with Infamus here.
Cloak: This here is my favorite ALL the time, and not only for Descent. I love the idea of being invisible to everything around me-it gives me an interesting sensation... and a good 30 secs of rest :D
Now, I heard, they've made somewhat real "invisibilty cloaks"...
-
Invulnerability and Cloak. My two favorite powerups in the series.
-
Hmmmm. I want to vote for Shield for sure, but it is a toss up between invuln and extra life.
CRAP! I can't decide! I'll get back to this.
-
I voted for the shield orb as it's the most iconic. I couldn't decide on a second, which is why I waited this long to vote. Then I decided to vote for energy, because if you run out of energy your screwed.
And also moved this to front page, we needed a new poll.
-
Without Cloak, I woulda gone for Shield but the purple (which is everyone's favourite colour), the dark shade and its continuous collapsing, pulsating animation swung it.
-
...purple (which is everyone's favourite colour)...
Actually, my favorite color is cobalt blue, not purple.
The fact that the shield orb just HAPPENS to be around the same shade of color is pure coincidence, I swear. :P
-
I've been thinking about this, and I know that the Shield orb (if done well) looks cool and is pretty accepted iconically for all games Descent (just look at this site's header).
However, if one is looking for a powerup to serve as a icon or symbol to represent a new or revamped or re-worked product along the Descent line ... I think I would choose the Extra Life orb because not only is it cool looking, but because other than the Shield orb, the Extra Life orb epitomizes all things Descent, and it is instantly recognizable for Descent.
-
I went shield and the extra life because the extra life is very special, fancy, and makes a cool sound.
-
Definitely the Shield Orb first... then the Energy Powerup.
Though I would say that the general shape of the Medium Lifter is just as symbolic.

It was the symbol robot on the D1 cover art.
-
...with the Diamond claw being D2's. Sadly, D3 didn't get such a treatment. :-\
-
Well, the title does say Descent 1 and 2. Although, neither the Medium Lifter nor the Diamond Claw are among the choices.
-
Most Descent 3 stuff I've seen often had the Tailbot, or the Frag missle firing version of it.
Again, not in the choices.
-
Out of the choices given I voted for the shield orb. My first choice would have been the Pyro-GX, but hey, I am kind of biased ;D

Nah, the Tubes was pretty memorable. First a scream, then you get sent flying.

The GX is the universal symbol for all things Descent, and it cannot be argued with. Ever. The powerups, however, are a different story.
This is kind of a poll-slash-debate.
-
shield orb, because it is a Descent staple.
then invulnerability orb because it is cool.
and about the cloak powerup, i just have to say,
-
LOL! (Seriously, I'm actually laughing aloud here...) :D
-
perhaps that's why the quake invisibility artifact keeps your eyes visible... heh
-
lol, never thought about that! But there are other ways of cloaking without bending light.
-
I finally played Descent last night and really liked the extra life powerup the most. I just think it's cool.

Wait, you've never played D1 before?
I am officially no longer the most sheltered person here :o
-
lol. did I word that wrong? I use to play Descent 1 and 2 A LOT, but it's been a while since I played it and forgot how each symbol/powerup looked.
