Title: Here's My Introduction & What Got Me To Descent & Freespace Collecting!
Post by: Tylosaurus on July 21, 2012, 10:30:09 AM
Hi everyone :)

Tylosaurus here :)

Hi everyone :)
As Co-founder of the first Descent Task Force:
http://dtaskforce.forumotion.com (http://dtaskforce.forumotion.com)

And the newly rebooted one, due to nonactive reasons:
http://descenttaskforce.forumotion.com (http://descenttaskforce.forumotion.com)
I thought becoming part of Planet Descent was surely a must, as many asked me to become a member there I did it for them, people likeEchoFox aka Alter-Fox or Kaiaastel, Pyro Jocky and a few others, I am bad at names so don't get agro at me for not remembering rofl!

Before I got involved with the Descent Communities I was and still am a General Moderator @ x-3dfx.com which was once the Official 3dfx Headquarters Website in Belfast, Ireland for 3dfx Europe.
http://www.x-3dfx.com (http://www.x-3dfx.com)

On January 20, 2001 we wanted to reboot our home to x-3dfx.com that being the home for all ex-3dfx gamers, collectors, fans and supporters.
October 27, 2006 we were hacked and went offline for about 4 years, in 2010 we regained power and rebuilt a totally new interface which it has to this very day, it is half active since it is getting a website update.

As Descent goes well here the full report:

Here is something I always wanted to show this place, after giving each of the 95+ items it's own sub gallery section.
What I did was create sub folders to all the parts of the collection, this took me half a day to sort out rofl  But hey it surely make it worth while doing right :)

Here you have it people, on October 24 this year I have been collecting for a good 18 years !!!

At other places I am named as Obi-Wan Kenobi & Gold Leader, but since I have anew name, Tylosaurus, due to that my partner will know me for who I am at new places as well, this new name is used because like here and I collect model Dinosaurs and resins of Dinosaurs., Tylosaurus suits me more than anything, collecting Dino's went even before my entire StarWars life. In games most will see me named as Tylo, this is also what I am mostly named as for short.

As Descent goes well here the full report:

Here is something I always wanted to show this place, after giving each of the 107 items it's own sub gallery section.
What I did was create sub folders to all the parts of the collection, this took me half a day to sort out rofl  But hey it surely make it worth while doing right :)

October 24 this year and this good ole collection will reach it's 18th anniversary!
So here all the games I have collected over these vast years.

So there you have it all 107 items, some may ask why I collect these well, Descent & Freespace have very well thought original designs and since day one they were released as demo's I got hooked to them and wanted only more and more and now this is my result, collecting these games has always been on my mind first you like it a lot then it becomes an addition then it becomes an obsession, no matter the more I can find the greater the thrill!

Also I collected these artworks and 3D renders

Descent Artwork & 3D Renders

My latest achievements were these:

Descent3: Mercenary USA Pre-Release Factory Sealed + NOT FOR RESALE Decal under the seal on the box :)
(http://www.3dfx.ch/gallery/d/42295-2/NOT+FOR+RESALE+decal+close+up.JPG) (http://www.3dfx.ch/gallery/v/3dfx_collectors/collectors_goldleader/Descent/Desccol/D3/D3MercUSA+NFR/?g2_navId=x52b1ea41)
Click to Enter!

Great and many thanks to a good friend of mine from USA for this one, a gift of many words 8-)

The Entire Freespace Collection as it is of now  :lol!:
(http://www.3dfx.ch/gallery/d/43144-2/520.jpg) (http://www.3dfx.ch/gallery/d/43140-1/The+Entire+Freespace+Collection_001.jpg)
Well, that was Freespace so far, it's smaller than I thought it would be, but very interesting none the less.

The latest addition was this interesting package from from MasternX a guy that has a contact with one of the cleaners that worked @ Interplay HQ back in 2003 to 2004, when it was being cleared after it shut down :)
So here's the parts in a one shot:
(http://www.3dfx.ch/gallery/d/43222-2/Interplay+Descent+Office+gear.jpg) (http://www.3dfx.ch/gallery/d/43220-1/Interplay+Descent+Office+gear.jpg)

That frame hung in the Interplay HQ Office hallways, them CD-R's are host software of Descent 1 and 2, the one with the scratches is the Descent 1 Alpha disc, this is where it all began before it was going final, the one from 1996 is the host disk for Descent Anniversary Edition me thinks hence the date of the disk, unless some Interplay Employee's can help me out here!

Anyways this came to me all thanks to MasternX from this website:
http://forums.my-collections.eu/ (http://forums.my-collections.eu/)
However I left that place some time ago, somethings didn't feel right, ah well no matter, sometimes it's best to leave a place before all hell breaks loose 8)

Okay here it is, only two items missing within the uber shot, which is the Interplay 7 level Descent Demo USA mini boxed:
(http://www.3dfx.ch/gallery/d/36228-2/ID1Demo.jpg) (http://www.3dfx.ch/gallery/v/3dfx_collectors/collectors_goldleader/Descent/Desccol/D1/ID1Demo/)

&

BytingEdge International Inc. USA Descent 3-D Air Combat 7 Level Descent Demo
(http://www.3dfx.ch/gallery/d/36224-2/BEIusad1dem.jpg) (http://www.3dfx.ch/gallery/v/3dfx_collectors/collectors_goldleader/Descent/Desccol/D1/BEIusad1dem/)

And they are within one of them many boxes and no I am not gonna do this again, since I just tidied up rofl, So to relay it all for just two lousy items? uhm no rofl  :lol!:

Here the entire lot:
(http://www.3dfx.ch/gallery/d/43255-1/The+entire+Descent+-+Freespace+collection+520.jpg) (http://www.3dfx.ch/gallery/d/43249-2/The+entire+Descent+-+Freespace+collection.jpg)

And only the boxes which is like 70% of the entire collection:
(http://www.3dfx.ch/gallery/d/43257-1/The+entire+Descent+-+Freespace+collection+boxes+only+520.jpg) (http://www.3dfx.ch/gallery/d/43252-2/The+entire+Descent+-+Freespace+collection+boxes+only.jpg)

Anyways it's Ultra HUGE! And yeah it's bigger than I though it was really! Crikey it even scared me rofl Image Image

So yeah, since October 24, 1994 til this very day, it was well worth doing and yes I will keep on collecting if I come across something I don't own yet, don't worry my friends, it will keep growing as long as I keep finding new items to add to it 8)

The only ones I seek now are these in boxed or factory sealed condition:

Descent: First Strike for Apple Macintosh:
(http://www.3dfx.ch/gallery/d/34760-2/Descent++For+Mac.jpg) (http://www.3dfx.ch/gallery/d/34759-2/Descent++For+Mac.jpg)

Descent II: Counterstrike for Apple Macintosh:
(http://www.3dfx.ch/gallery/d/34758-2/Descent2+for+Macintosh.jpg) (http://www.3dfx.ch/gallery/d/34757-1/Descent2+for+Macintosh.jpg)

So yeah it's pretty much complete now 8-)

Anyhow as the last half year goes, I have had mixed feelings about all this, of like selling it, but hey after at looking on what I have gathered all them years, I have decided to keep it all for now, it is a unique thing after all right.

Descent like Freespace means life to me as retro games go, they probably were two of the best game types ever to be created in the entire gaming history   :D

My latest achievement is Descent 1 EUR FDD Version Factory Sealed from 1994, this is Item 107:
(http://www.3dfx.ch/gallery/d/50739-2/Descent+EUR+FDD+Version+1994+Factory+Sealed+top.jpg) (http://www.3dfx.ch/gallery/d/50737-1/Descent+EUR+FDD+Version+1994+Factory+Sealed+top.jpg)

(http://www.3dfx.ch/gallery/d/50743-2/Descent+EUR+FDD+Version+1994+Factory+Sealed+rear.jpg) (http://www.3dfx.ch/gallery/d/50741-1/Descent+EUR+FDD+Version+1994+Factory+Sealed+rear.jpg)
As you can see this is a German printed version, no matter to that, the point is, that this has never been removed from it's factory seal since it was packed @ Parallax Software / Interplay back in 1994!

Items like this are so hard to come by these days, this is the game were it all started, Descent 1 is also my fav, to me the first is always the best, which is like that with most games.

As living room decoration goes I have a Vitrine Table, like that glass top table you saw in the previous post that had VGA cards in it, in this I laid my rarest Descent & Freespace factory sealed and boxed games, which you can see here:
(http://www.3dfx.ch/gallery/d/50986-2/Vitrine+Table+layout+front.jpg) (http://www.3dfx.ch/gallery/d/50984-1/Vitrine+Table+layout+front.jpg)

this is with the added decoration on it, my favourite Scale 1:200 Airliner models:
(http://www.3dfx.ch/gallery/d/50974-2/Vitrine+Table+_+Decor+layout+front.jpg) (http://www.3dfx.ch/gallery/d/50972-1/Vitrine+Table+_+Decor+layout+front.jpg)

They are these:
China Airlines Airbus A330-300 Orchid Livery
China Airlines Boeing B737-800 Lavender Livery
China Airlines Boeing B747-400 50th Anniversary Livery 1959-2009
Thai Airways Boeing B777-300 ER

Here my scale model Dinosaur collection with all my real Orchids, that with a few McFairlane Water Clan Dragons, two 3 headed Hydra's and two Tylosaurus models:
(http://www.3dfx.ch/gallery/d/51403-2/12+Steggies+an+d+Orchids+xDDDDDDD.jpg) (http://www.3dfx.ch/gallery/d/51401-2/12+Steggies+an+d+Orchids+xDDDDDDD.jpg)

here from the other side:
(http://www.3dfx.ch/gallery/d/51406-2/12+Steggies_+xDDDDDDD.jpg) (http://www.3dfx.ch/gallery/d/51404-1/12+Steggies_+xDDDDDDD.jpg)

Here the two Tylos, which i used for my Sig:
(http://www.3dfx.ch/gallery/d/51561-2/Safari+Ltd+_amp_+Kaiyodo+Tylows.jpg) (http://www.3dfx.ch/gallery/d/51559-1/Safari+Ltd+_amp_+Kaiyodo+Tylows.jpg)

Some of them orchids are older than three and a half years, and still they are doing great :)

Hey, good to see you here!
Not to discourage you or anything, but I'm pretty sure everyone (or at least mostly everyone) here knows you from other Descent sites XD.  And even if not I'm pretty sure they'll have heard of your collection.

Yeah, I'm the latter; not knowing the user that well, but I know of your collection quite well. :D

Seriously, that collection's awesome.  ;)

I'm both frightened and impressed by the scale of your collection. But mostly impressed. A wonderful tribute to what is (imo) the golden age of computer games.

Many thanks for the warm welcome everyone! I feel overwhelmed by so many friendly faces!!

As for them long gaming nights Enzo03, here's that game we played last night hehe
http://youtu.be/r4RylhN_9UY (http://youtu.be/r4RylhN_9UY)
720p only works since Youtube messed up the 1080p it seems rofl, I remixed it with Armin van Buuren's A State of Trance Episode 535

With communities like this we can keep the best game that hit the PC age intact. The goal of the collection also to create an archive of how many different original box arts were made, different releases, versions, even Pre-releases and such the original Host programmers disks of Descent, Descent Anniversary Edition and alpha's of Descent 2 also.

The Collection is also there to show interplay that there still is interest in these game series and I am still holding on to that piece of hope for a Descent 4 and a Freespace 3, then we can enlarge the game series even more and I have more games to collect also hahah xDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD

On the behalf of Descent 4 , when I worked for the Open Descent Foundation aka ODF, I wrote the official Role Script or say storyline for their version of D4, the entire script was my work and my idea's you can give it a read here:
http://descenttaskforce.forumotion.com/t47-flight-back-the-aftermath-of-samuel-dravis-vengeance-unorthodox-my-storylines-of-d4 (http://descenttaskforce.forumotion.com/t47-flight-back-the-aftermath-of-samuel-dravis-vengeance-unorthodox-my-storylines-of-d4)

I posted it in the open because the ODF has not been active for like 3 years now, this work took me a good 14 weeks. the main plot aka Flight Back: The Aftermath of Samuel Dravis is 24 missions + 6 Secret missions and the expansion pack aka Flight Back: Vengeance is 14 missions + 3 Secret Missions, as for the Mercenary Expansion pack: Flight Back: Unorthodox, I never got to start it,, since I could not find enough information to get it on going, still willing to work on this one, but I guess it's kinda late now.

So now since the script is my work and it's my own property I am giving it to the Descent Community to make their own Campaign for Descent 1,2 or 3, Descent 3 might be most handy since it has good outer location support, so do what you like with it, it's my gift to these wonderful places.

Everyone may use all the pics I made as the collection goes, go ahead just don't use it for sales, but I am sure you blokes won't do that hehe.

As for Planet Descent, that I never came to this place, well I am deeply embarrassed of myself not doing so, but really this is just great to see what is probably the oldest Descent forum out there and I thought that this place closed down in 2001 or so, but due to that I never came around., odd hay?

nyways like many other people say, better later than never xD Whaaaaa Zaaaaaaa xDDDD Bruuuuds!  ;D ;D ;D

Well, actually, long story short, the original PD DID shut down not so long ago, not so much because of lack of support, but more of due to the forum's increasing age, and the hosts randomly deciding to pull the plug without telling anybody, so we built THIS site to replace it. :)

Just technicalities, though. ;)

Ahhh okay! Well great to have one of the coolest looking Descent forums back, I like how you guys retained it's original look, just brilliant work guys!  8) 8) 8)

Thanks for the compliment. We have tried to keep the look of the old forum although not an exact duplicate. And the SMF software gives a lot of new features. But it's really about the people here and our common interest in this old game called Descent ;)

Thanks for the compliment. We have tried to keep the look of the old forum although not an exact duplicate. And the SMF software gives a lot of new features. But it's really about the people here and our common interest in this old game called Descent ;)

Manny thanks WillyP I am just surprised so many people are still active within the Descent communities we are talking about an almost 18 year old game here, really I am amazed! I play Descent 1 almost every night with the Descent Task Force and the Descent Rangers, just fun games though hehe.

Playing Descent does me good, due to my rough past, it's the only game that made me feel good when feeling blue.
The Descent Task Force like the Descent Rangers are the two places that gave me space within the community and I thank them both for playing multiple games weekly to almost daily, just great.

And the Descent Task Force a place I co-Founded like the Descent Rangers is still evry well active hehe

If any of you prefer fun games the Descent Task Force is the place for you if you prefer scored games the Descent Rangers is the place for you, but still they also do fun games but not as much as the Descent Task Force does.

Here the Descent Task Force:
(http://i47.servimg.com/u/f47/17/57/90/43/pyro11.png) (http://descenttaskforce.forumotion.com/)

Here the Descent Rangers:
(http://www.3dfx.ch/gallery/d/45942-4/beauty.jpg) (http://www.descentrangers.com/public/templates/default/index.asp?page=index)

In my humble opinion it's all about having fun and not some silly score, this is also the main thing why the Descent Task Force is very active, it's all about having fun and keeping the game series alive, that is our goal and so far we have been doing just that.

I dunno if Planet Descent does scored games or just fun games, do you folks use mumble as well for communication, or do you use something else?
The more active Descent communities, the better, and together we can keep this wonderful game series alive, anyways that is my goal.

If any of you seek good levels, go to these sites , unless you all already knew this :P

Well feel free to join my game nights if you feel like doing that :)
I am mostly on the Descent Rangers mumble server, everyone is welcome here, even that the Descent Task Force has their own sever, it has lag issues, so we just camp over on the Descent Rangers Mumble server, you can find more about that here:
http://www.descentrangers.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=80 (http://www.descentrangers.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=80)

As for the Descent Task Force Mumble server, here our info page:

Everyone is welcome and I hope to see some of you people in the mines  8)

I have the hardware available to host a (to the best of my knowledge) lag-free server, I just don't have anybody to play it, and I'm not into hosting stuff that nobody plays on.

Is your server D1, D2, or D3?
Title: Re: Here's My Introduction & What Got Me To Descent & Freespace Collecting!
Post by: Tylosaurus on July 23, 2012, 10:10:05 AM
Mainly D1 but D2 is played just for the change :)
Here an 8 player game we had this morning :)
http://youtu.be/s0V-5h9Hjjs (http://youtu.be/s0V-5h9Hjjs)

Descent Task Force & Descent Ranger Pilots having major fun at their best, expect the same tomorrow morning again and many days after it hehe
Everyone had a ping of 140 to 175 which is very good for my server here in The Netherlands xD even players I have seen with a ping of 200-225 played just fine.
Most European players have pings of 47 to 65 max which is very nice.

That are people from Poland, Greece, Germany, France, Switzerland and United Kingdom.

Yeah I'm also US so that's another issue.

I didn't know there was a dedicated server program for D1/2?

Well it's not dedicated, never said it was hehe and the US isn't a problem, all the people you saw in my video well 6 of them were from USA 2 of them Adwrith and I from the EU

As the games go, well I just host them myself on my systems which are these:

As for the systems, I have plenty of those, here are all six, showing the fastest as listed first :)

All three can host Descent  1& 2 games, the Dual 2435 and the Dual 285 also are great for new gen apps but I use them mainly to record, compile and convert self made HD films to HD DivX + AC3 sound for my You Tube channel, for game nights we had and such.

I have been working with Dual Opterons sicne 2004 and they have never let me down, they are dead stable and rock solid, the Dual 2435 is mostly used though, it has 12 CPU cores @ 2600Mhz idea for compiling and converting my DH Video's to the right format in a very rapid time, they are also used for real time flight & Ship simulations.

They are my collection of 2CPU systems, as Iam also a member @ 2CPU.com, whaving system with 2CPU's is very normal, there are also crazy people with system that have 4 or even 8 CPU's each with multiple cores for example a 4-way Opteron 6274 , these have 16 cores each, people that have these don't only do Seti @ Home or Folding 2 Home but mainly scientific research and such, very interesting stuff :) I also do renders for them, playing Descent is mainly for my fun hours as computers go along side the serious things hehe.

As being 100% Disabled I have the time to host Descent games and keep these games alive with systems I built from selling collections and other old stuff I 'd never saw useful in the end :)
After that Descent Freespace Collection, which is till have hehe, I was like let's do something with it, so I made this gallery; as where I sorted it all out:
http://www.3dfx.ch/gallery/v/3dfx_collectors/collectors_goldleader/Descent/Desccol/?g2_navId=xb0b685b1 (http://www.3dfx.ch/gallery/v/3dfx_collectors/collectors_goldleader/Descent/Desccol/?g2_navId=xb0b685b1)

I was like making it useful by hosting Descent games for the Descent players out there! And that lead me to the Descent Rangers and the Descent Task Force which I founded with Celestial after I left the Descent Rangers, but my return to the Descent Rangers is planned, there I have many friends there and I will make a return there, leaving them wasn't nice, I owe them one right!  8)
I do see them everyday and they are a great lot, just due to my asperger syndrome and autism I have it takes long for me to get used to people and places, the world hasn't been always the easiest place to be in, but sometimes you have to force yourself to do things to get further.

WOW.. all that just to play Descent! If your not dedicated, I don't know what is!

hehe it's an obsessed hobby of mine, I also do real time Flight && Ship Simulators hehe as for the Duallies? Well I got that idea from2CPU.com, been a member there for more than 11 and a half years as Gold Leader:
http://www.2cpu.com/ (http://www.2cpu.com/)

To visit the forums for your 2CPU needs, you'd have to register, really there are some sicker systems over there, I know some that have 4CPU and even 8 CPU setups, many professionals come there also that do science research or weather imulations yeah we seen alot of high end SMP gear there, it's the hardware I love using , also due to high quality Server hardware parts, they are redundant, reliable and more failsafe than the standard desktop stuff, lifespan per system is like 8 years instead of 2 :)

But since I only do Descent the Dual 6 core Setup is used to compile, render and convert self made HD video's which iremixed of Descent Task Force hosted games & Just Cause2 Game runs to HD DivX with AC3 sound for my you tube channel and this does use all my 12 CPU cores, which you can see here:
A D1 Video 1080p + AC3 Sound:
(http://www.3dfx.ch/gallery/d/50175-2/89_+CPU+used_+all+12+Cores+in+action_.jpg) (http://www.3dfx.ch/gallery/d/50173-1/89_+CPU+used_+all+12+Cores+in+action_.jpg)
Here the result:
http://youtu.be/hVGKrUqICn4 (http://youtu.be/hVGKrUqICn4)

And here a Just Cause 2 video I converted which also was 9 other programs in the background, hence the greater Ram usage:
(http://www.3dfx.ch/gallery/d/51040-2/91_+CPU+usage+5_58GB+ram+usage.jpg) (http://www.3dfx.ch/gallery/d/51038-1/91_+CPU+usage+5_58GB+ram+usage.jpg)
Here the result:
http://youtu.be/OY4kzpkbUso (http://youtu.be/OY4kzpkbUso)

As for Descent, the best game in the world deserves the best quality hardware in the world and I guess that is where I got a little too obsessed with xDDDDDD
As for the dedicated thing only D3 supports this, even though dedicated servers D3 wise can't run in a continuous loop, if I recall properly and since I only do mainly D1 and sometimes D2 to get a little change of taste in there, I have to host each and every game manually, my connection can handle 3 8 player games if needed to be since my down speed is 60MBps and my up is 6MBps :)
So no issues thx to that.

But I'm fine to host games if anyone has the need for some D, which the Descent task Force is all about, playing the games we all love, reliving them good old days as much as we can :)
We clal it spread'n the luv for D!

I'm confused. You said your server had lag problems, but then you post pictures of multiple 2xCPU systems?
Title: Re: Here's My Introduction & What Got Me To Descent & Freespace Collecting!
Post by: Tylosaurus on July 25, 2012, 10:24:53 AM
they are the systesm I host multiple games on, but as Isaid in the previous post, I have to host D1 & D2 games manually, via the games themselves.
Descent 1 & 2 don't have dedicated support, so what I do I host a game kill myself and there you go a D1 or D2 has been created.

Go here to track games:
http://www.descentvalhalla.com/tracker/default.aspx (http://www.descentvalhalla.com/tracker/default.aspx)

As lag goes, erm I never said that here :X Unless you can state where I said that or quote me ;)

I do get lag on American servers a lot, that is probably due to their weaker upload connections, this has to be high to create low pings and I always host with 20 packets, to prevent packet loss from taking place and since I have an upload of 6MBps this also helps a lot.
These systems are a part of my intro, just some obsession I have with Server hardware and they are the systems I host my games on and also use to make the 1080p video's from in game action with Descent Task Force & Descent Rangers pilots  8)

I am mostly on the Descent Rangers mumble server, everyone is welcome here, even that the Descent Task Force has their own sever, it has lag issues, so we just camp over on the Descent Rangers Mumble server...
There

I sure wish I could afford workstation/server-quality parts for my desktops :x The 10-year-old server I have with dual single-core 2.4GHz xeons (The REALLY OLD pentium-4 era 32-bit ones) can compete with my old desktop with a 64-bit capable dual-core 2.6Ghz Athlon 64, and 3x the RAM. How much graphics support is there with those server boards, though?

Nah I meant the Mumble server hehe voor the voice chat, never mentioned the games ;)

"so we just camp over on the Descent Rangers Mumble server..."

I did mention that ;) the DTF Mumble server is part of the DXX-Rebirth Mumble server, it seems to have symptoms, dunno why, i'd have to contact zif and see if he knows something ;)

the Dual 6 Core Opteron 2435 has the Supermicro H8DAE-2 it has native SLI support, thus the Dual GTX 295 Red Editions in it even GTX 690's work fine in it as a friend of mine has tested.

What about Xeon boards? I'm all for AMDs in desktops and I use them frequently, but if it's on a server board it's gotta be a xeon.
Title: Re: Here's My Introduction & What Got Me To Descent & Freespace Collecting!

Nah only AMD Opterons for workstation server, more cores per CPU , they consume less power as TDP's go, and their price performance is way better, I grabbed my two Six-Core Opteron 2435's for 235 EUR incl shipping from USA to my country which is The Netherlands, in my country they were still 800 Euro's per CPU at the time I bought them.

I bought them from a good contact ,as they were new from old stock, these are the finds you need hehe, for me this was cheaper than buying a new system and such. As Xeons go I can buy twice the amount of similar performing Opterons  for 2 Xeons, so again AMD is the Win when it comes t 2CPU & 4CPU setups.

Xeons are beyond my interest and also beyond my budjet, and I only had issues with Intel based setups, I just plan to use Dual Opterons only, they have proven me a much better experience.

Here's a question... How do you keep the room cool with all those monsters in it? I can't even keep my room cool with a single processor and video card.
Title: Re: Here's My Introduction & What Got Me To Descent & Freespace Collecting!
Post by: Tylosaurus on July 28, 2012, 11:03:02 PM
Well I live in The Netherlands an it doesn't get warm here, the other advantage is that I live in an Apartment on the first flor, it's very cool in my apartment, the one above me catches the most heat hehe.
I have fans to cool my room if it's really needed, but even so I can open plenty windows, I ever get an overheated room actually :)

And it is very rarely I use all three at once, it's mostly the left one and the other two are used , just depending on what app I will be running at the time :)

The Definitive Collection !! Awesome!  Factory Sealed!!  Double Awesome!

Yeah, I'm impressed.

IMHO the Definitive Collection is the way to get Descent 1 and 2.

Many thanks for the cool replies everyone :) @ Alter-Fox  I have that too when you go through it here my self, just astonished I found a 3rd version of the Descent I and II The Definitive Collection factory sealed.

The European/German version is like this:

Top:
(http://www.3dfx.ch/gallery/d/37092-2/Descent+I+and+II+The+Definitive+Collection+EUR+Sealed+top.JPG) (http://www.3dfx.ch/gallery/d/37091-2/Descent+I+and+II+The+Definitive+Collection+EUR+Sealed+top.JPG)

Rear:

The American version is like this:

Top:
(http://www.3dfx.ch/gallery/d/37098-2/Descent+I+and+II+The+Definitive+Collection+USA+_+Descent+3+Demo+Inside+Sealed+top.JPG) (http://www.3dfx.ch/gallery/d/37097-2/Descent+I+and+II+The+Definitive+Collection+USA+_+Descent+3+Demo+Inside+Sealed+top.JPG)

Rear:
(http://www.3dfx.ch/gallery/d/37095-2/Descent+I+and+II+The+Definitive+Collection+USA+_+Descent+3+Demo+Inside+Sealed+rear.JPG) (http://www.3dfx.ch/gallery/d/37094-2/Descent+I+and+II+The+Definitive+Collection+USA+_+Descent+3+Demo+Inside+Sealed+rear.JPG)

In Germany & Austria there was the Descent Venture Pack also, which looks like this:

Top:
(http://www.3dfx.ch/gallery/d/37107-2/Descent+Venture+Pack+Boxed+top.JPG) (http://www.3dfx.ch/gallery/d/37106-2/Descent+Venture+Pack+Boxed+top.JPG)

Rear:
(http://www.3dfx.ch/gallery/d/37104-2/Descent+Venture+Pack+Boxed+rear.JPG) (http://www.3dfx.ch/gallery/d/37103-2/Descent+Venture+Pack+Boxed+rear.JPG)

Which is Descent 1, 2 and 3 + Descent 3 Mercenary in one box, D1 Levels of the World & D2 Vertigo + Descent Mission Builder II were not added to this pack however, this piece out rares the Descent I & II Definitive Collections any day :)

Here a picture I took of the European/German & American Version of Descent I and II The Definitive Collection & The Venture Pack, the American Version of Descent I and II The Definitive Collection is quite  a bit smaller than the European/German variant of it incl the Venture pack
(http://www.3dfx.ch/gallery/d/37224-2/The+4+Descent+Combo+packs.JPG) (http://www.3dfx.ch/gallery/d/37223-2/The+4+Descent+Combo+packs.JPG)

I'll make more pics once the Australian version arrives 8)
And the one I just bought is the Australian version, which looks more like the European/German version but with a Descent3 demo like the much smaller American version has, all three are Factory sealed also.

Which is this one:

There are four versions for Descent 3 minus the Mercenary packs :)

As you can see the European one is the blue box, it comes with a 3dfx & NVIDIA logo the same with the US PC & Linux version, the Macintosh verson comes with an ATi Rage Logo, which was surprising to find out, it's Mac Logo's are also printed on the box instead of stickers.

That's wierd. My Descent 3 just came in a 3-fold paperboard thing, yours have actual plastic boxes.

The boxes are made of cardboard, but they have a plasticized cover the arts were printed on them with advanced machinery 8)

The one you have is this one I believe:

The CD Sleeve variant, these are re-releases of the game, my boxes are all dated from around Q2 of 1999, that is when D3 was released on PC, Linux & Macintosh, back in the 90's all games were packed in them big boxes, also for better marketing, int he early 2000's the games were reproduced and sold in CD Sleeve packaging like the one you have.

I also have three different variant of Descent3 Mercenary as the boxed version go :)

Descent 3: Mercenary European Variant:

This last one was a gift from a 3dfx Collector, which I helped to gain an ultra rare 3dfx Voodoo5 6000 AGP 128MB Rev.A2 2600 Engineering Sample, which is this card:
Top:

The sad bit is that this guy never contacts me again after he sent me a big F.U. to me during new years on Jan 01 of 2010 ... At least I got that rare D3 Merc USA NFR from him.

As you can see this Pre-Production Sample is identical to the Production one, well except the Factory Seal and the NFR Decal under the seal, making this piece an ultra rare and so far the only one I have ever seen.

I had a feeling you have linux. I saw a stuffed linux penguin in one of those pictures of yours.

I think it will come with a box. I hope this is it, and I can make copies. I only have linux, no windows or mac.
one copy I had, broke in the bluray tray, the other never got to me. They refunded my money, and said sorry.
At one time, I had a imac, and purchased it off from amazon. They gave me d1 instead for the mac.

Well I have a Tux Penguin yes, which I bought @ "HCC Dagen Utrecht" in 2006 I think it was, could of been earlier, I can't remember clearly, I bought it because way back then I was beta tester for x-3dfx.com or their x-3dfx Community Drivers for 3dfx Voodoo Banshee, 2, 3,  4 & 5 and 3dfxzone.it for their AmigaMerlin drivers for Voodoo Banshee, 2, 3,  4 & 5 that needed MesaFX OpenGL32.dll's to run fewer new-gen based games that rendered with OpenGL 2.0+
http://www.3dfxzone.it/enboard/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=992 (http://www.3dfxzone.it/enboard/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=992)

So due to that Tux Plays a big role in 3dfx land :)
I only use Windows 2KPro UK + SP4, WinXPPro UK + SP3 & Win7Pro x64 UK + SP1, I used MesaFX to get UT2003 running on my Voodoo5 5000 AGP/PCI 32MB & 3dfx Voodoo5 6000 AGP 128MB Rev.A 3700 Engineering Samples 8) Which were these three:

Here the Voodoo5 5000 AGP Rev.A0 3700 & Voodoo5 5000 PCi Rev.A1 0900 compared, 28 weeks difference between the two, and still never produced heh!

This was my Voodoo5 6000 Which I used with MesaFX 6.2.0.2 to get Doom3 running @ 60 fps @ 1024 x768 x32 in medium details with AmigaMerlin 3.1 R1 as base driver.

Top Card:      3dfx Voodoo5 6000 AGP 128MB Rev.A 3700 Engineering Sample, never produced
Middle Card:  3dfx Voodoo5 5500 AGP 64MB Rev.A 2500 Production Sample, mass produced
Bottom Card: 3dfx Voodoo5 5000 AGP 32MB Rev.A0 3700 Engineering Sample, , never produced

thanks to MesaFX from the Linux world, I could play many new gen games on these Voodoo5 cards without any issues what so ever. I also used them to test Descent 3 & Freespace 2 which both used the latest Glide version which was 3.54 8)  Voodoo5 made Descent 3 & Freespace2 look at their absolute best, nothing beats Glide 3.54 on these babies I even tried D3 on Radeons and GeForce cards, they all suffered from heavy banding and bleached out skies, tbut them 3dfx Voodoo5 cards, they ran it issue free.

Here a collection update, I did my recount today and found out that I have 102 items and not 112, so yeah it was good to find out what I really have collected them past 18 years and 4 months.

So here the two factory sealed items I bought off ebay from Old game collectors I think, since such find a are near to impossible these days.   :blah: :blah: :blah:

Descent I and II The Definitive Collection Big Box USA Version Factory Sealed, this item is from 1997, so it's been like this for the past 16 years...  :D :D :D

Whoa, hold on, is that a functional copy of Descent IV: Invasion game as it stood before it's cancellation on that floppy, or just separate and miscellaneous files and stuff from it?

No it's a backup of the rtf the Storyline of D4 invasion :)

It's a copy of the original of course but the story is original none the less :)  I just placed it on a floppy disk so I won't lose it :)

Oh, okay. Although, now that I think about it, I don't think I ever saw said storyline...how did you come to possess a copy?

Some fun games, but I couldn't hold onto too many games. I am quite a minimalist. not bragging or saying I'm right. It's only a preference, and I don't like a lot of stuff around.

I love it, it's the game it's self I truly interest over playing it, Descent like Freespace were both original of their own :) To collect these speciffic games was my goal and yeah kinda proud that I did do this. I don't like bragging off either really, that is totally not my thing.

Oh yes I can, the Floppy I used is in good shape, I also have placed a backup of it on my server ;)
Right but you'll have to hang on to an old computer forever if you want to have a floppy drive to put it in.

Not necessarily.  USB floppy drives (at least the 3.5" flavor) are fairly common and cheap.

With SD cards, usb, cds, dvds, blu ray, cloud/server, external hds, whatever else is out there, im surprised the floppies are still being made. That's only 1.4 MB. That's nothing now.

My Software Engineering professor has stacks upon stacks of 3.5in diskettes in his office at my university.

They're probably old student disks.  I remember using 3.5" disks to turn in programming assignments back in '96 or so.

I remember using linux back in '06, but not floppies on it. Been a while for me. Any data can just end up on something else.

I have lots of PC's lol three of them have functional FDD Drives, I don't see the need to hassle about that :P it's that I found it a waste to spoil such little info to use an entire CD heh, don't worry it's safe kept like this. my Flppy is indeed 1.44MB to be precise the file is just a few KB, so I see no issues with this solution :)

I just use flash memory sticks for everything now, I don't even bother with CDs anymore unless there's something I want to play in a CD player :P.

about the same here, USB mostly. but I will have a CD backed up with my data, just in case the USB goes bad.
I don't do clouding at all, with the exception of maybe amazon MP3 cloud.

USB sticks can fail the same as a Floppy can, as for the cloud? I'd never trust that, it can be hacked and the chance of data loss is greater than on a safe home network which is connected to the internet via a router/switch, the cloud is also a much more interesting and larger target for hostiles, thus due to that the chance is greater for data loss, so as my D4 RTF goes, it's safer on a Floppy Disk within my collection :)
Also I have locked the Floppy Disk, so it can't be overwritten 8)

I'm thinking of the old "put tape over the hole to unlock it" trick. Can now be overwritten  8)

I don't trust cloud either. Someone could hack into it. Server down, or my internet.
music doesn't seem to private.

"The cloud" has a much better track record than your home network. Backups, redundancy, uptime guarantees, building security, fire suppression, multiple locations, network security, encryption, monitoring, etc. What does your home network have? A deadbolt and a smoke detector, and a basic NAT firewall? Maybe a RAID setup if you're good. Data loss simply doesn't happen in the cloud. Data theft? Maybe, extremely rarely. But not loss.

Sorry but I disagree with you, my home network I find more reliable, it never failed me and it never will, I keep my data on systems I hardly have enabled. These are not connected to the internet.

My home network is more private than the cloud too, I don't trust the cloud, I never will, sorry :X

The point about the cloud being immune to fire is a good one hackers, but I tend to think that most of its other advantages can be achieved just by keeping backups on a computer that's not connected to the internet and not used for anything else.

Of course the problem there is that you need the money to buy a computer that you don't even plan to use :D.

When it comes to backing up my data I always like to rely on myself and not some third party.  Because I know how much my data means to me and how far I want to go to protect it better than anyone else who could do it for me.

If there's anything I've learned about the computing world, is that there's never anything that is absolutely immune to hacking or other forms of data loss/corruption. So in this instance, to each their own, and whichever method they prefer.

basically in a nutshell. I prefer the non-cloud approach, some prefer to have it.

Anyways back to the topic :P  I was wondering if there were any baseball caps with the Descent, Descent 2 or Descent 3 logo's on them or a Pyro for that same matter?
Personally I have never seen these but it could be that these were made too right as Descent Merchandise products went? I also wonder what happened to the Parallax Software & Vollution Software Company Flags, I guess these were also made, anyways always keep looking they say 8)

I can't recall ever seeing any 'official' Descent branded apparel, but there is Planet Descent stuff here:

PlanetDescent:Zazzle.com Store (http://www.zazzle.com/planetdescent)

And this is why the best plan that's always advised by experts, is just to have more than one backup in more than one place!
Oh wait, we've moved on.
