Here's my current desktop on my old laptop. It was drawn by NateMoody (http://natemoody.deviantart.com/) on deviantART. Wish I had more Redwall-themed desktop pics like this one.  :-\

I have a new laptop now too, but it's just got one of the default desktops at the moment that really isn't much to look at, so I won't post it for now.

I eliminated my ban on video game screenshots for desktops (well, provided they don't have hud elements), and am now using a screenshot of my minecraft world at night.

I finally found something to change it to - though it took forever to cut the picture to the right size.
It's not my favourite desktop ever but it's better than what I had (game screenshots).

That wallpaper of yours kinda makes me think of a book that I used to read when I was in Middleschool called MossFlower.

Anyways, as I said about my rotating wallpaper on my laptop at DBB.net:
I decided to make my laptop wallpapers change automatically, here are some samples:

first (Entire Team is Kirby!)-
(http://s4.postimage.org/34tui2gx0/kirbyfortress2.jpg) (http://postimage.org/image/34tui2gx0/)

Second (Sap this, Spy!)-

Third (an awesome Transformers: War For Cybertron wallpaper)-
(http://s4.postimage.org/34u2rr7dw/war_for_cybertron_battle.jpg) (http://postimage.org/image/34u2rr7dw/)

Fourth (an old wallpaper that I used for years)-
(http://s4.postimage.org/34u9dwld0/rtm1.jpg) (http://postimage.org/image/34u9dwld0/)

Fifth (Lilformers)-
(http://s4.postimage.org/34ukyo0tg/lil_skywarp_and_cobra.jpg) (http://postimage.org/image/34ukyo0tg/)

and finally, this one with the Timberwolf (or Madcat to you InnerSphere Surats!)-
(http://s4.postimage.org/34upxa2as/timberwolf.jpg) (http://postimage.org/image/34upxa2as/)

(the first and second Wallpapers (that I found) can be found here-
http://wall.alphacoders.com/index.php?s=Video%20Game&su=Team%20Fortress%202)

I used this nifty freeware utility called "Any Wallpaper", to randomize my wallpaper automatically

(P.S. Can we get this thread stickified, please?)

This would be because Mossflower is part of the Redwall series, and are thus interconnected. :)

These are my January, February and March desktops. I've only got up til March created, but the ingredients to create them all. Each 32x32 piece of graphics I cut from gamemaps.com (I think that's the website). I have always wanted a Mario world for each month so I'm making my own. If I'm not editing Descent music or doing math homework, I'm doing this.

This is a list of all the worlds corresponding to each month as follows along with the boss associated with each world, AND the song associate with each map in parenthesis:

1 Cold Frontier - Lemmy Koopa (SMB3 World 6)
2 Cupid Cloud - Wendy Koopa (SMB3 World 5 Upper Level)
3 Clover Field - Larry Koopa (SMB3 World 1)
4 Dreamy Woods - Iggy Koopa (SMW World 5)
5 Crawdad Bayou - Ludwig Von Koopa (SMB3 World 7)
6 Palm Cove - Roy Koopa (SMB3 World 3)
7 The Moon - Tatanga, final boss on Super Mario Land, and area boss to the Space Zone on Super Mario Land 2 on Gameboy (SMW Star World)
8 Camel Sandhills - Morton Koopa (SMB3 World 2)
9 Wheat Fields - Kamek (SMW World 3)
10 Dreary Woods - Big Boo (SMB3 World 8)
11 Autumn Vista - Bowser Jr., from SMW2 (SMB3 World 5 Lower Level)
12 The North Pole - Bowser/The Grinch (SMB3 World 4)

Fun stuff!

:O pretty cool wallpapers Alieo.
You would be an excellent map maker for some mario 3 hack/mod.

Thanks, Pumo! Unfortunately, I don't know anything about hacking or modding, but if there was just a way to simply drag and drop tiles where I want, the sky would be the limit!

NOTE: on #10, that reference should be to SMB3 World 8... not world sunglasses... unless you wear your sunglasses at night in Dark Land! lol

Okay, new laptop now has a desktop worth showing. :)

It's from Stargate Universe (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stargate_Universe). Say what you will about the show, but there's no denying that it had a lot of beautiful special effect views like this one.  8)

@ Scyphi: Cool background! Is there a way to prevent that dock from appearing on startup other than X-ing it out each time? I hate it... I'd rather use desktop icons and save memory.
Title: Re: Desktops 2011

If you're lucky and they use a simple approach for running it, you should just be able to clear it out of start -> programs -> startup, I've seen a few similar programs start up on boot using this method.

That "dock" (HP Advisor with a kind of quick launch) is easily removed from startup.   If Scyphi say's OK, I'll get the steps from his system and post it for you (or he can post it for you).  Either he likes having it there or hasn't worried about turning it off yet.

@TechNor... oh you don't have to go through all that trouble for me... I'll just figure it out when I got the time. Thanks though. Besides, I'll try Insanity's method when I get a chance... I mean sure I'm at my computer and the start button is 3 inches away from where I'm typing, but like, I don't feel like clicking the start button right now! LOL

The dock was there when I first booted up the computer. I've never actually used it, so it can probably go, but it hasn't really been bugging me, actually. It's pretty easy to ignore. Furthermore, the desktop seems kind of empty without it...so I might just leave it there as filler until I've got something else to put in it's place.

JUST finished the April map! In April, which is World 4, "Dreamy Woods" (going to be opposite of October's "Dreary Woods") I introduce those P balloons that were used in Super Mario World to make Mario fat and fly for a short period of time. Since this is not an actual game but more like what I like to call a "daily graphic event calendar," the P balloons are used to fly one space over an unreachable area. I also added a sub-objective other than just getting coins to pay hammer bros. or plants for hammers to shatter corresponding shops. You have to collect 4 faeries and put them in the faerie box in the upper corner of the world. When that happens, it destroys the mines guarding Iggy Koopa's battleship surrounding Level 30 (April 30). Then, you continue into World 5, Crawdad Bayou, on a boat. That world will be a swamp wasteland with a bunch of boat usage and docks. That'll be fun to make!

Also, I changed it up in April. In January through March you collect coins as you go. In this month, you collect Yoshi eggs as you go on a month-long Easter egg hunt and trade them in for hammers, bombs, etc. Oh, and in March, I introduced bomb shops where you can purchase Bob-Ombs for $9 each. They destroy the harder rocks, which are really re-colored icebergs from SMB3 World 6. Also new in April, I cleaned up the way you collect keys and hammers and such. I added comic bubbles (which was made from the SMB3 comic bubble coming out of the castles that say "HELP!") Sundays are either fortresses, battleships or tanks, the last Sunday of the month is the palace, and the last day of the month is usually an airship, but it's a battleship this month leading into May...

With nice artwork, why have icons and added stuff on the desktop? Mine is clean except for the dock, or panel on the bottom. no other icons or anything exist on my desktop. Got that from my dad. he'd even have the panel disappear until he needed it.

What, do close all your windows, and just stare at your wallpaper? Why wouldn't you want to have icons on the desktop, at least for your most used progs?  As soon as the machine boots, I start opening windows and doing stuff.

Each to their own, of course, I mean no offense to anyone.  8)

Vanguard uses Mac OSX for his main machine so I'm assuming that the role of desktop icons are pretty much covered by the dock and the Finder's "Go" menu. On my windows machine, I use the launcher KwikStrip and just leave the my computer/ect icons on the desktop.

basically yep :) There is that one folder on the dock called "applications", where I can access pretty much any application that isn't already on the dock.

With Linux, I had just some next to the menu, quick launch or whatever you call it.

Naturally, when I run applications, some will fill the screen and I am okay with it. But I like the clean look.

We are different. I use to have icons on the left side of the screen, only one row/column

edit: and yes willyp, after getting that wallpaper from techpro, I plan to stare at that screen a bit  8)

hm...does techpro mind being called that?  ???  technor isn't too hard to remember I guess

edit: my uncle however, has an imac and icons all over the screen. I think I know why I like it clean on my desktop...can you guess? I just said it. I like "CLEAN". It just seems too cluttered when icons are all over the place.
I do what I can at work, having it as clean as possible but obviously I can't.

I do have two rows of icons on my droid, almost taking up half of the screen.

I do have icons, but I keep them pretty much at the minimum...I handle important stuff by shortcuts and folders...

And I also like the "openness" so I've framed my BG with icons, grouped like a HUD... I'm using this approach when I had this Freespace-themed desktops...

you changed it back? all because of me? who am I, that is worthy enough to have someone change it back?

I don't mind either name. I guess I just got use to techpro from planetdescent.com, seems like a name you've had a while.

Maybe if I changed my name, most would still call me Vanguard because it's a pretty well known name that I've had a while.

He might as well have changed it back, everybody was still calling him Techpro anyway. :P

I can understand the want to have a "clean" desktop, Vanguard. I generally try to keep the icons on my desktop to a minimum, and the sticky notes I have up organized and taken down as soon as I no longer need them. Unfortunately, I have easily five fairly sizable ones that are up now that seem to be permanent. :P

Like I said, my droid can look "busy" so to speak. Icons that fill half of the screen, and occasionally, I'll have a post-it note/sticky.

Also, in May, the paths may seem IMPOSSIBLE, but they are because Mario will be wearing a frog suit the entire month allowing him to hop over stuff, but not over trees. He can't jump into the swamp without an underwater path but he can jump on a lily pad. He also can't jump OVER trees or levels, pipes, etc. Only small rivers. And he can jump up down left right 2 squares over from origin, and only one square diagonally up-right, up-left, down-right, or down-left.

I have June almost completely finished and will post it tonight. June is "Palm Cove" and what I think is the prettiest Mario Map Calendar world I've made by far. A bunch of island, and you have to rescue semi-naked mermaids so you can go to SPACE on Shuttle Atlantis!

Okay, I have two things here. The first one is my desktop Mario map of halfway through April. I've added weather icons to the completed days. Also, compare this April to the first time I posted April. There are a few changes because the shuttle launch for April 19 got scrubbed so the rocket is gone. It's now going to appear in June which is the one I will be attending.

Also, I need your help for May. In April, a side objective for Mario was to collect 4 faeries and insert them into a vault adjacent to the April 29 tile that blows up the mines surrounding Iggy Koopa's tanker. For May, "Crawdad Bayou," the side objective is to collect "froggies" along the way. Here's where I need your help, if you feel like taking the time to do this. I need only 5 froggies to be inserted into the vault to unlock the mines that block Ludwig Von Koopa's Boat at the end of May. How many froggies do you count? I count 5.

---

Edit: Oh yeah two more things... remember what you did for 4/20 as a high schooler? Also, May 12 is my math FINAL, that's why it's centered at that evil voodoo bayou section on a skull!

Okay as promised, here's June 2011. June is "World 6: Palm Cove" of my Mario Map Calendar series. Currency this month is the Sand Dollar. I introduce a new weapon, the Ice Flower. Instead of traveling from island to island by boat, you travel via Ice Flower, freezing the ocean as you skid along it. Background objective is to rescue the mermaids which unlocks Star Island where you climb the tower, battle Roy Koopa, then get inside Tatanga's space ship and go to... July... World 7... The Moon!

July 2011, World 7 - The Moon

By the way, I edited the ending of World 6 a little. Instead of chasing the launched rocket from 6/28 on the ship that appears on 6/30, the rocket launches and RESTS on an empty space atop the cloud on 6/30 and you ride THAT rocket into World 7. 7/1-7/2 are outer space levels, or "days" and on 7/3 you land on The Moon.

The side objective for the moon world is to activate 6 red antennas that turn from red to green. For each antenna that turn green, it slowly exhumes that ship you originally saw at the end of 6/30 from my last post.

The exhumation of Tatanga's ship will slowly emerge throughout the month in the middle of the largest crater. It has 6 exhumation phases before it's flyable at 7/31, but as you're going through July, an alien Mario battled at the end of the gameboy game "Super Mario Land" by the name of Tatanga chases Mario and hides behind various moon rocks until finally he takes a hold of his ship (which is Tatanga's actual ship from the game) at the last minute and he becomes the boss to World 7, The Moon. The battle (if this were an actual game) would take place in space on the way back to Earth. Finally, Tatanga's ship will crash in the midst of a barren desert, becoming World 8 - Camel Sandhills. That's next.

There's also one HUGE moon rock in the middle of the moon that takes three bombs to be blasted. Several bomb shops are posted around World 7. Mario travels around the moon for the entire month in a Hammer Suit because I always thought it looks a lot like a space suit. The crash landing that will occur on Earth will cause Hammer Mario to shrink down to little Mario but not quite kill him. The first parts of World 8 will be the scavenging of various power-ups.

So here it is... The Moon! A totally different kind of Mario world in the format of SMB3.

SIDENOTE: Also, notice my commemoration to the 7/20/1969 moonlanding. I HAD to add that!

I'd post my desktop, but right now I'm using Ubuntu 11.04, and it's Unity interface is pretty poor... Not sure I want to show off such an ill-conceived taskbar as the one mine has currently got. And plus, it currently has a stock wallpaper ::gaspshockhorror::  ;)

nice ship wallpaper :)

I'm not getting the wheel of fortune thing. I'm assuming part of it is "That was a (something something something) chance"..wait....."that was a joke, haha fat chance?

I didn't get that either.  So I followed the link and there was some reference to Portal, and the song at the end. I assume the puzzle was 'shopped.  Since I never completed Portal, as it was the most boring game ever, I never heard the end song.
Title: Re: Desktops 2011

During the final song of Portal, GlaDOS, the malicious (and very funny) supercomputer sings a song about staying alive. During the song, she suggests you go to Black Mesa - the location of the "resonance cascade" (otherwise known as pseudo-scientific mumbo jumbo) that caused the space-time rift in Half-Life, populating the world with alien creatures. The line goes "Maybe Black Mesa? That was a joke, ha ha, fat chance." Therefore, the wheel of fortune puzzle.

It would really only be humorous if you played the game. And if you didn't find it boring, like WillyP did. That saddens me.  ;)

It also saddens me to hear this as well, but despite popular belief, apparently Portal really ISN'T everybody's cup of tea.

Word of advice to WillyP then. If you found the first Portal boring, then don't play Portal 2, cuz' it's triple the original's length.

...but it goes against everything I believe in (gaming wise) to say that, just so you know. :P

As for the pic, I saw that pic ages ago, and I believe linked to it once in some old thread on here where we were discussing the then-still unreleased Portal 2. I laughed out loud when I figured out what it said, but it really something you have to figure out yourself. If you have to have someone else explain it to you, then it's not so funny.  :-\

As for desktops, I haven't changed mine yet, but I've been considering it.

I wonder what it really was.

I guess it makes sense now, just never played Portal. Never really heard of it. I think it's safe to assume now is the time to run and hide.

lol, no I didn't like Portal but I do like to exaggerate how much I disliked it only because everyone else (with a few notable exceptions) are such big fans of the game.

It would be an awesome game to combine the concept behind Portal, namely the portal gun and solving the puzzles, with the excitement and varied game-play possible with Descent. While we are at it we should add in the destructible environment from Red Faction.

Ok, back on topic... My desktop:  :-[

Okay, but I might have to warn you, that cake was made back in 2007, so it's going to be a little stale and hard.

And those turrets don't always have the best of aim. :P

The cake, potatoes, and all that were references to Portal itself, BTW, just so there's no confusion with those who are unfamiliar with the game. :P x2

Quote from: WillyP
It would be an awesome game to combine the concept behind Portal, namely the portal gun and solving the puzzles, with the excitement and varied game-play possible with Descent.

I've already thought with this, but I really don't know how well it'd work, mostly because part of what makes Portal so fun is the physics of it, and taking advantage of it. In fact, a lot of the puzzles necessitate this. If you start throwing in Descent elements, namely where you're in a flying ship, you all but eliminate all of that, and the portals start to become only a cool novelty.

So what if it wasn't a 360-idea like Descent, but more of a groundpounder like it already is, except with other elements thrown-in, like the ability to use other weapons to shoot people with? Guess what, people have already tried this too, by modding Portal's sister game, Half-Life (2 I believe, I've never actually played it, but I've heard lots about it) to include the duel portal device, and again, it just boils down to a cool novelty.

To be fair though, that's partly because Half-Life wasn't designed with that in mind, so there weren't really that many chances with to "think with portals" as the phrase goes. So including some of those mind-bending puzzles might give it a chance, but then you'd run a very HIGH risk of making the resulting product feel like two games tacked onto each other, constantly switching off, with either none of them taking predominance as needed, or one taking more predominance over the other, making the other seem like a mere novelty. There is also the risk of the two clashing with each other by forcing the player to have to use one over the other at times, which would ultimately cause more harm for the game than good.

In short, as I see it, there's a slim chance it could be done successfully once all of this is kept in mind, but you have to be very careful to pull it off just right, and even then, you'd have no guarantees it'd be worth it in the end. And even if you did pull it off, I'd highly doubt you could do it again.

So in the long run, I think the whole Portal concept works best as it already is. You try messing with that, and you run the risk of messing it up altogether.

Still...I will admit it's a cool idea to fantasize over. :)

I just don't think it could work. :(

unlike some people on here, *cough* WillyP *cough* cough*, I just said I never played it. Never said I hated it. I am sure there are many games I have liked that you guys haven't heard. and for the record, I'm having fun writing this  :P

I wouldn't be surprised if you heard of these though,

Ultrabots
Maabus
C.H.A.O.S. (something, some C name, DOS or windows, can't remember, puzzler type)
Stellar 7 (think that's right)
Terminal Velocity
Sinistar (more should know this one)
7th Guest
11th Hour

I know there were others, but most would have heard of them, like Star Wars games like X-Wing, and Tie Fighter; others like Doom, Hexen, Heretic, um..................... Descent I think,  :P

there's a fighting one, not Mortal Kombat or street fighter. I want to say you were very limited on who you could choose to fight, and they showed the level of their agility, and two other things.

Oh...OH yes I have! Techpro, THIS was the game I was trying to describe to you a few days (or was it weeks? Maybe you can't even remember) ago but you couldn't figure out what I was talking about. You used to play it WAY back in the day. Or, at least, it was on the computer TO play...

Anyway, as for some of those others, no, can't say I'm familiar with them.

Except Descent, of course, but that's just by chance. :P

And Doom, I've heard of Doom, but I haven't ever played it, and I highly doubt I ever will, as it's just not my kind of game.

The idea of going around shooting demon things never really appealed to me, to be honest.

Going around and shooting demented robot things in a ship that can literally go ANYWHERE, on the other hand... :P
Title: Re: Desktops 2011

Doom is overrated. Yes, I said it. The only FPS games I've actually enjoyed are Half-Life, Goldeneye 007 (both for the N64 and the Wii), and the Metroid Prime series (if you want to call the Prime series an FPS series ;))

EDIT: Oh, and Unreal Torunament 2004 when I get bored at work. Stupid, mindless, destructive fun, right there.  ;D

DOUBLE EDIT: Vanguard, might you be talking about the old DOS fighter "One Must Fall 2097"? It's the only DOS fighting game I remember that had very specific statistics regarding each pilot and each giant robot you could choose. Yes, that was certainly some great fifty-foot robot vs. fifty-foot robot action, there.

My Ubuntu 11.04 Classic desktop, clean and dirty.

Terminal Velocity. Game developer: Terminal Reality
Game not licensed with Microsoft. Game released prior to Fury3 and Hellbender, yet had slightly better graphics. I blame Microsoft for that since the other 2 were licensed under Microsoft :P

I still play Hellbender thanks to compatability mode. I used to have my avatar set to the Hellbender pilot. I remember some of the cheats too. imstuck was level warp. impumped was all weapons. steroids was invulnerability.

I really wish that I could have played Terminal Velocity and Fury3. I tried downloading their torrents, but I can never figure out how to get them to properly download.

The classic Doom was fun, my opinion though. Doom 3 and beyond, not so much.

Yeah, "One Must Fall 2097" I saw some pictures, sort of brings back memories. Thank you.
Anyone know that CHAOS game? I don't think there was much animation. more like click on something, and you see the next frame. It's a puzzler I think, and you're in some vehicle or ship of some sort.

I tried it once recently, I didn't particularly like it especially after having played Half Life 2 first.  Plus it's so limited compared to today's games (even compared to Descent :P) - I'd like to at least have the ability to look up and down, or jump.
Title: Re: Desktops 2011

they updated that a while back, where you can look up, down, and even jump. I'd like to say it's ZDoom.
I have played all sorts of games. games like Maabus, you basically just click here and there, there's no great freedom. it still wasn't too bad.

Stupid Imageshack, CPU is always more costly than bandwidth. You can normally milk unlimited bandwidth from your host but often only like 25mins/month of aggregate CPU time on a shared server.

5$ says they host their own servers, meaning that bandwidth is all they pay for besides electricity.

I absolutely don't dispute that.
What puzzles me is that a loaded CPU consumes more power and discharges more heat than an idle one whereas a busy connection can't say the same.
I think it must all have to do with getting people back to their site so they can hit you with adverts on their own turf, which presumably balances out the extra CPU usage financially.

Interestingly, the Pirate Bay just ordered 10 2xQuad Xeon servers and I pointed out how sad it was that the hardware was being wasted in that way and, my God, what a flamewar kicked off there, over at TorrentFreak.
It was a bit like me V all the pirates in the world (one of whom was one of the guys prosecuted in the 2009 Pirate Bay Trial).

Can you really not hotlink an imageshack image without a link back? I've done it before

Then again, these days I tend to avoid imageshack like the plague -- they've been doing some very annoying things lately, like forcing certain regions to register (likely paid if I remember correct) accounts to view images, heh.

Agreed about promoting the service (esp. with a view to advertising revenue).
Hell with them. Getting some decent hosting or setting up a little server for personal use is usually pretty inexpensive. Then you can do what you want.

Wallpaper is from InterFaceLift.com (http://www.interfacelift.com) (which is free).

My job got the iPad for me, and I gotta say ... it is very nice to have on hand (and handy).

[Insert off-topic comments...]

With this thing I can (while away from my desktop or laptop computers, or at them):
1. Do multiple email accounts (I'm checking 4 currently, though I have around 14 accounts)
2. Surf the web (duh) and while Safari isn't the greatest (sorry Steve Jobs, you and I disagree) it actually does a pretty decent job.
3. Multiple Calendars (can be calendars tied to you email accounts)
4. Take notes anytime/anywhere (probably one of the best all-time uses for this thing) and in a I.T. job that is worth a lot.
5. Most wireless based network activities (ping, traceroute, telnet, packet analysis, signal strength, subnet tools, network speed tests, on and on ...), VNC, RDP, 5250 Terminal, SSH, etc.  (yes, I can easily remote control my Win2008 R2 servers with this device)
6. News apps, and info feeds, streaming, RSS, you name it.  Lots of these.  USA Today, BBC, MSNBC, PBS, NPR, Engadget, CNet, on and on...
7. Social networking.  Facebook, LinkIn, MySpace, Twitter, IM apps of all kinds, SMS messaging, Digg, StumbleUpon .... again, LOTs of stuff here.
8. Media (video, music, pictures, etc)  YouTube, GoogleVideo, Movie Trailers (Apple.com and others), IMDB, Pandora, iTunes (of course), MP3, and much more, including Google Earth.
9.  File handling.  Despite the opinion many get right off, it does do file handling, especially the the Internet "Cloud" by way of many apps (including Google Apps).
10. Video Conference.  It has two cameras (in front and in back) making it easy to snap pics or use as a web cam.  I got the WebEx app (for those of you who are familiar with WebEx video conferencing).
11. Read books.  Lots and lots of books.
12. Games.  Yes, we shan't skip that.

To give you a "peek" ... here's some additional pics.  One shows me reading the News through the BBC app, another shows the latest news of HP and Dell through "Flipbook", then a pic of me switching between apps (yes, it runs multiple apps at the same time), and lastely a very informative Weather app.  You don't get stuff this in-depth or immersive with the much smaller iPod Touch (I have one of those, too).

[... return to thread topic now]

Why do you have 14 mail accounts? Is life too long for you or something? I don't mean that nastily. I just read it and was like, Eh?

I think they should have called it the "Why?-Pad". I got a 5" android tablet that is a good size for browsing, has Flash for a start and makes a pretty good job of all the above. I've had it ages. It has a really good camera and it's built like a brick s***house too. It's pretty pocketable, makes calls and it was free with contract.
Apple really are the kings of marketing if they can get so many people to *pay* separately for a larger and maybe less-functional product. I say that with particular reference to the first IPad.

You'd be right about the original iPad.  As for Flash ... I find I don't miss it that much.  Fewer and fewer sites are using Flash, and with good reason (but that's for another thread if we wish to go there).

14 email addresses... My "home" email accounts (I have 3, long story), email accounts for IM services (msn, yahoo, aim, icq) at home, email accounts for the same IM services when at work, work email account, 2 email accounts for printing and scanning services I maintain at work ... That's 14 and I have't even mentioned my "junk" accounts for when I sign up for stuff online (thus avoiding spam in my 'active' accounts).   ;D

Yeah, my email is very compartmentalized... ::)

I dunno, after all Flash has much higher runtime performance than HTML5 but HTML5 is obviously still in its infancy. Flash certainly has its uses and I think it will long into the future as well if my experiences with HTML5 are anything to go from. Certainly, for in-browser games you can't really beat it.

I hadn't considered all the instant messaging addresses that you pick up in life. I just use Windows Live but I'm dissatisfied with its reliability and the amount of advertising. I feel that when you pay well over £100 for the 'ultimate' version an operating system, you shouldn't have to be exposed to advertising when you use programs that ostensibly form part of it. Obviously, I understand that the Live Network costs money to run, which has to come from somewhere, but it does come as a slap in the face.

HTML5 has bad performance? Quake online runs in HTML5 afaik ... bad performance? Don't think so.
Title: Re: Desktops 2011
Post by: Crash on May 19, 2011, 02:42:42 AM
I don't think so either.
I didn't say it had "bad performance".  Where did I say that?  Maybe you can look back and find where I said that because I can't find it.
If there's one thing I dislike, it's being misquoted or misrepresented. Could I has cheeseburger/apology?

What I did say was that "Flash has much higher runtime performance" and that's all I said.  That statement can be backed up by evidence and I did say that things would likely even-up once the technology matured a bit.
There are published demos and experiments right there on Youtube for you look for, done by people far more qualified than me that show that Flash has far superior performance to HTML5 in terms of handling large numbers of objects (ie. impressive particle effects and whatever) although I grant you that I saw those some time ago and things have likely improved. Large numbers of objects is one big thing that you need for online games development. That's why I said it was ideal "for in-browser games".

I don't draw many conclusions from that fact that "Quake Online" *might* run in HTML5 ... , AFAYK.  I can find something called "Quake Live".  According to Wikipedia "Quake Live" runs from a browser plugin that has to be downloaded, so I'm guessing it doesn't run ... in HTML5 although it doesn't seem to run in Flash either.  Aside from that, it is based on Quake III Arena and that game is 12 years old. I should know. I was too young to purchase it without my parents being there to lie about my age when it was released. Mind you, it was a good game and I got a *lot* of mileage out of it.

All I'm saying is that Flash has its uses. Now, Google seems to have got Quake II working in HTML5 but that game requires 90MHz worth of CPU time and no hardware acceleration in its original form. It is a product of a nobler era.  I don't know at all if the same is possible in any way with Flash, not having that much experience working with it but it looks as though the only reason this was done by Google was just as a "Haha, look. Mine's as big as yours." exercise. I wonder if poeple thought "what's the point" when it came to porting it to Flash and ported it to Windows Mobile or... whatever instead.

I can understand why people think Flash is a bad idea. I can think of quite a few reasons for that but I don't appreciate the way you try and slap me down based on "AFAIK" information that turns out to be completely wrong as far as I can tell.

I'm sorry if I come across as overly aggressive but I've kinda had my faith in humanity shaken by a certain argument that I unfortunately got tied up in at TorrentFreak.

That's why I use the Trillian client (http://www.trillian.im/). It handles multiple chat services (msn, yahoo, aol/aim, icq, irc, google, Facebook, LinkedIn, and more), provides most services that chat users use including webcam and voice, doesn't use a lot of system resources, no ads, and standard version is free.

That sounds great! I'll try that. And... , as long as it works, right? I mean Live Messenger is really unreliable. It won't allow me to send files or even winks to certain contacts and who it allows you to send them to changes on a minute's basis. All the buttons for sharing etc disappear at the bottom of some peoples' windows at random.
Apparently, a lot of people have that trouble. I un- and re-installed but it made no frickin' difference.
Title: Re: Desktops 2011

I gotta retract one detail... apparently Trillian does allow ads these days (unless you pay for a "Pro" account, pretty nominal fee) but from my experience it's almost only occasional ads encouraging upgrading to "Pro" ... which is far, far, far fewer ads than the Windows Live client.

I was made aware of this detail while reading the details about the newest update to Trillian.  I've seen so very very few ads with it ... it's like having no ads at all.

Kind of...
Watch Silver's gameplay in Sonic 06 and you'll see what I mean.

And I actually liked Sonic Heroes (and the Sonic Adventure titles, now that I've played them).  I played Unleashed and Colors on my friend's Wii... Unleashed was awful (at least in the night stages, the day was kind of cool), but Colors was really good.
Title: Re: Desktops 2011
Post by: Scyphi on May 31, 2011, 12:58:14 PM
In terms of the goods and bads of Sonic, it depends entirely on the person. Everyone seems to have different opinions about it. To quote myself when last speaking about the matter...

Quote
"It's like politics, with it's people on the "right" side, and those on the "left", with several sitting somewhere in-between...except with the Sonic fanbase, there's also an "up" side, a "down" side, a "southeast" side, a "northwest" side, and so on, with even more people sitting somewhere in the middle of it all. With all that diversity, it's hard to find two Sonic fans that can agree on much of anything regarding Sonic."

It's actually quite frustrating at times. Particularly when fans start getting carried away. There are some out there that seem to quite truthfully hate the direction the franchise has gone with every fiber of their body. And then keep playing the games, as if expecting them to sudden match their every, unique, want.

As if.

There are a few things most fans can agree on, though, and that's Sonic 06 was a really bad game (made worse by the fact that it was obvious to all it didn't have to be, because deep down, it still had the makings of a stellar game), that Sonic Colors was probably the most promising Sonic game released in a long while (but not perfect, to what degree, though, is a matter of debate), and that the upcoming Sonic Generations looks pretty promising for the moment.

Going from that, one can safely say that, yes, Sonic has gone downhill in recent years, but is showing signs of pulling out, so Sega may still turn things around. So I'm hopeful. :)

And here I thought I was going to have people asking me where I got the picture. :P

Silver is a great character by the way, he just had the misfortune of debuting in a very bad game.  :-\

You're absolutely right. I'm no great fan of it although I know someone who is at the age of 25/26.
I just remember from my childhood that Sonic was the game everyone looked up to as the standard on the megadrive. It made Mario seem very childish, slow and stilted. Now all it seems to do is play catch-up and try to fit-in and measure-up.

I think they need to go back to the characters and premise that really made it great. I wonder whether they've diluted the original characters too much with newer ones that push away the original fans. That and they've changed the original ones as well with regard to Dr Robotnik and his unfortunate name-change.

Robotnik was always only his North American name, something we America's dubbed him for some marketing reason that alludes me. In Japan, he was always Dr. Eggman from the beginning. I think the reason they ultimately dropped one name, was because having two different names was causing a confusion.

Not to derail the topic, of course. Maybe I should have asked this in a new thread...

I don't know why, but I could never stand custom sound schemes (with the exception of replacing some of the vague and hard-to-hear sounds used since vista with their xp counterparts -- like the usb sounds). I guess I'm just weird :P

(then again, I also almost never customize my color schemes or the like. I guess I just can't decide on something that looks good ever).
Title: Re: Desktops 2011
Post by: Kaiaatzl on June 04, 2011, 11:17:26 AM
I'd love to personalize my sound scheme, but I'm such a DIYer when it comes to anything including sound I'd have to make all the sounds myself or be completely unsatisfied.  (And my background is still a giant coyote, so I need them to fit that...)
And even once I've personalized the sound scheme I'd probably be changing it again really soon.
So... not yet.  I'm not good at sticking with decisions when they involve things I make and I could (and will) improve on.
I think I do almost have enough sounds I've made that I like though.

I should look into a explorer extension that allows the classic icon modes again... Then again, with Windows 7 Microsoft is trying to force everyone to use their views by making Explorer use an undocumented control that kinda almost sorta acts like a ListView but with an entirely different and undocumented API for making it work, though I hear there's a trick that makes Explorer use ListViews again.

I updated the details of my Mario Map individual levels tiles and added shadow effect on the numbers so they stand out more and also improved pixelization on the diamonds. In this picture, compare the old style: Tile#23 with the new style, Tile#22. There are three detailed diamonds instead of two pixelated diamonds. Completed level, Tile#15, shows how well the numbers stand out now.

All this time I've been working on various MP3 album projects and haven't had a chance to finish World 8, but it's pretty much finished, just gotta complete some holes in the map.

Samus FTW! Ultimate ass kicker.

Now for mine! I love the A-10. They were scheduled to go out of service many years ago, but considering how we're only dealing with terrorists living in rundown houses and caves, and driving around vehicles held together with duct tape, the Air Force figured that some 30mm cannon fire solves many problems.

You're like... my evil opposite or something.  I absolutely hate the humidity.  Summer or winter.  In summer it feels like I can't breathe, in winter the wet condensing everywhere makes you that much colder.

Granted, you probably wouldn't be such a big fan of humidity either at minus 50 degrees.
Title: Re: Desktops 2011

Some jet wallpapers that I found on Deviantart (1 F-14, 2 F-15s)-

Not on dev-art but still:
someone on tfw2005.com compiled these awesome Transformers: War For Cybertron poster sized images into a wallpaper-
(http://s2.postimage.org/17gmlnjtw/war_for_cybertron_autobot_vs_decepticons.jpg) (http://postimage.org/image/17gmlnjtw/)
(NZ, you should get War For Cybertron for either XBox360 or PS3.  It's the best Transformers game since Transformers Armada for PS2 (since you told me before)
EDIT: Bumblebee's face is being obscured by my non-steam game shortcut icon :P

and finally, this is battletech related but the description for this one is a long story-

For all the art work that desktop demonstrates, don't you find that the icons 'hide' in the pattern and are more difficult to locate?  And that taskbar, not very efficient I'd think.

Maybe it's just me, but I always thought desktops should be both beautiful and easy to use instead of being beautiful and difficult.

Pictures like this
http://www.flickr.com/photos/7172698@N06/6198642077/
Is what I like to use for desktops.  Beautiful and when used on your desktop, the icons are easy to see.

It's kind of a "calendar" desktop. I update it daily moving Mario around one level. Everything I use is in the taskbar, and any excess icons are in the borders of the map.

As I battled being a victim of identity theft, Mario battled with Bowser on the last day of November (World 11-30). Mario now enters World 12, Winter Wonderland! With Christmas coming up, what is Christmas without Luigi? Well, the Grinch has him captive in the same contraption Alieo's avatar is in. It's up to Mario to rescue Luigi on the Winter Solstice so they can have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year... but it appears Mario's 12 month (12 world Tenure) is over. Mario will not be continuing to the first world of 2012.

I recently went through all of my favorites on my deviantART page and organized all of the desktop wallpapers I had accumulated into a separate collection for easy reference, so I figured I'd make use of it and pick a new desktop from that collection.

It was hard to pick which one I wanted, though. Wasn't really in the mood for a Star Trek or Stargate themed pic, though, and I had a whole mess of Portal pics I liked, but I had just had a Portal desktop, so I wanted something different this time. Didn't find any original artsy pics that I really felt HAD to be my desktop on this occasion, though, nor did I have anything that fit the wintery theme of the time of year. Nearly went with a Sonic-related desktop that I had found recently...

...but finally I broke down to temptation and went with the pic I had actually been trying to resist using as a desktop for awhile now.

For what I would think would be obvious reasons.

Still...at least I'm brave enough to admit it.

Assuming you're talking about the presence of a cartoon animated pony on your desktop, I don't think there's anything wrong with being a mlp fan (even if you're a male), as long as you aren't annoying about it. (A problem I've seen so many places on the internet, heh) I don't think I see that coming from you, though.

I could to Techpro though, because of a certain discussion we had once on the matter of MLP while sitting in the same room at home, on the subject of a certain episode I brought up in this thread (http://www.planetdescent.net/index.php/topic,833.msg11885.html#msg11885).

But I won't.

Not here at least. ;)

lol, You can probably tell the interest that I have generated at this point. Had "the discussion" with my mom actually and it went over well. She is now the editor of my story. Haven't told my dad.

The planes are SAAB J-35. Sadly, retired. After 50+ years of service. The Austrian airforce was the last to fly them.

By the way: SAAB-Scania is an aerospace/bus maker company that also makes cars. Not the other way around.

Son of a beach that one is perdy... but is your monitor really wide for that one or do you have it centered or cut off or...?

? ... ah ... Ooh!  You're talking about the Win7 desktop, not the Mac desktop. (geez, took me long enough).

The 2560x1024 image is the background (tiled) that I use on my dual 1280x1024 monitor setup.

The Mac is what it is. (1680x1050)

Alieo, sorry, it occurs to me (now, finally) that you must have been referring to the Win7 and not the Mac desktop.  So the correct answer would be: dual monitors, background is tiled and that way fits perfectly across two monitors.

End of 2011 and end of the first year of Mario Maps. I started designing these in 2010, and 2011 set the foundation for how the worlds /months are going to look, but in the future, different date layouts and architectural improvements are in store. In 2012, Mario stays behind the Toad's House by World 12-31 and hands the quest off to Luigi to begin on his year long quest. Bye bye, Mario... Hello, Luigi!  And hello, 2012!

Edit: I took the liberty of adding a "Desktops 2012" thread: http://www.planetdescent.net/index.php/topic,965.0.html (http://www.planetdescent.net/index.php/topic,965.0.html)
