Title: Descent 3 - online. How's it looking?
Post by: VANGUARD on April 19, 2011, 01:05:22 PM
Hey all. I can't promise anything, but I am thinking of clearing off the dust on my D3 discs and possibly play online again. The last time I was on, was on a linux system using that descent.cx website or something. mostly just shows the IP address, map, how many are playing.
I am now on the iMac, I imagine it will still allow me to connect. I will have to see though.

maybe I'll see you in the mines again soon. And if anything, it'd most likely be Friday and Saturday night.

I will see.

And my pilot name will once again be VANGUARD or {VANGUARD}.

Good!

Not quite as many playing as when you were around the D3 mines before, but there are some new faces.

You might also check the tracker and stats system at Ryujin's new DescentValhalla (http://descentvalhalla.com) site.

That's sort of scary. There weren't too many when I was there. I really only played CTF at night, and it varied from a few to 20 people.

How do you join the game with no IP address? Do you know if it will work with an iMac?

I can check some night too. I may have time Friday night.

Both the descent.cx tracker and Ryujin's tracker allow you to click the game for an auto-launch which will connect you automatically.  Or you can manually enter the IP & port (found on the game info page).

There are a few Mac D3ers, but I haven't seen any of them in a while.  Not sure if the Mac version of D3 works on the newest OS-X.

Does Vortex work on Mac?

Probably not, but it's definitely the best way to find games and connect to them right now.

Thomas would be a good person to ask about that actually... or to make a version of the D3 direct IP launcher for Mac - you could find the server on the DBB.net tracker (same as Vortex) and copy the IP.

Vortex is not cross-platform in any way but it works well under Wine, at least.

BTW the auto launch from the non-vortex trackers doesn't work for me at all even though I'm on Windows.

So it's possible that wouldn't work.
You can easily copy the IP but be careful not to copy any of the spaces before or after it, as they invalidate it.

I used PlayonMac to get Descent 3 going. I'll see when I have time.

It's a setting in vortex to associate D3:// links with vortex.

I still miss Descent 1 and 2 (offline). I don't know if I'll ever see that. I don't understand how a lot of that d2x rebirth or whatever, and d1x-xl or something, goes.

By luck alone, I have the D1 disc (imac edition), but no luck on getting that running. It has nice music though. Someone on here pointed that out to me. thanks again.

Head to here (http://www.dxx-rebirth.com/download-dxx-rebirth/) to download DXX-Rebirth. Unpack the DMG which should install the program for you. The included docs nicely explain where everything goes, but it also describes difficulty getting the data. Your options there basically boil down to using an PowerPC emulator to run an older version of Mac OS to install it, or find a PC CD-ROM instead. DXX-Rebirth can work with either the PC or Mac data, regardless of the operating system you're on at the moment. You can get the data cheaply from GOG also, if you have a little extra money to spend

I guess the other solution would be to use a PowerPC emulator to run a older Mac OS version or a version of OSX with Classic support, but I'm not sure if the Mac versions of D1/D2 have the 150 FPS cap issue.

I'll see what I can do, thanks for the info.

I think what I have to do first is get things in order. My problem is, I have an order of what comes first, second, third, etc. Not always, but at times I do. sad thing, some of these things are not important, and some are actually becoming a waste of my time.

Whether I say bye or not, I will have to stop going to some forums, mostly the Linux ones. I just don't use it anymore, and I am not in any real conversation with anyone.

PlanetDescent is really the only forum I find worthy of going to. We talk about things, share whatever, laugh, goof off. etc.

I may have to lay off gaming on the PS3. I stopped recording some things on the DVR. I just want to get back into some of the good old stuff again, like D1 and D2. even D3, like online.

UPDATE: I was finally able to play the original Descent game. The graphics were poor, it didn't fill up the screen, mouse didn't move very fast, sound effects were delayed, but it was still a BLAST! I then tried the Dxrebirth. I was amazed to get it going. All looked a lot better except one thing, my mouse barely moves :(

I'm beginning to get deva vu. the days I had to use only the keyboard.

I love the mouse, it's a Logitech marble mouse.

edit: there is a slight issue however. How do you save where you've been? I have a bad feeling the iMac does things differently.

To save your game, hit Alt-F2, a dialog will pop up where you can save to one of the slots. In game, you can hit Alt-f3 to load a game. Press f1 for a listing of all keys. In the "Options" menu, you can increase mouse sensitivity, this should make you turn faster.

I don't think this works with the iMac. I can try again. I only did on the other game.

update: Alt+Command+2 works with saving, and those commands with 3 is to load.

Now it's just the mouse issue or back with the keyboard only.

I cranked up the sensitivity and that doesn't do anything. It's not moving slowly, it just moves a tad, and doesn't really want to move anymore. It's hard to explain on here. I can turn left, and it may move a tad to the left, then hesitate, may turn a tad up or down, then stop

update: I think it's a pitching error, that I read from the dxrebirth forum. also, for some reason, the music stops while playing a level. It doesn't want to re-play the song.

Hmm... d1x-rebirth does that too when you tell it to emulate the MAC CD music, so I'm wondering if that was supposed to happen?
And many of the mac songs are longer than the psx version so I'm wondering if that's the reason.

I had it selected, and unselected. I had other things selected and unselected, and I am still getting no music when it ends. It won't loop.

I'm just curious if it's supposed to loop at all - read my above post.

The evidence points to the idea that the mac version is not supposed to loop music.
Have you played the mac version before?  (Talking about years ago when it was released).  Are you sure it was supposed to loop music then?
