Title: Questions about Descent: Underground?
Post by: dunkelza on April 03, 2015, 11:47:13 AM
Hi, I'm Dunkelza, the Lead Moderator over at the Descendent Studios forums:
http://descendentstudios.com (http://descendentstudios.com)

I wanted to stop by and see if people had any questions that hadn't already been answered on the Kickstarter page:
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/descendentstudios/descent-underground (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/descendentstudios/descent-underground)

I'm happy to answer any questions I can- and to try to get answers for things I don't know.

Well, here's a simple one to get the ball going that I thought of with the recent gameplay vid; when a player dies, will the ships still do that trademark "death roll" that appeared in the other Descent games? I mean, prequel or not, I can't really see any reason why not, and in fact, the death roll strikes me as even more fitting in a prequel as the whole idea of a death roll seems robust, like what you'd expect from a prequel like this.

Here's another; will there be equivalents of an energy center?

Not sure on this one.  Probably a bit early for the guys to have thought through it.  It would make a great Wish List post on our forums, though:

I believe so.  I don't have the specifics, but Rob mentioned them at one point, IIRC.

I just want it to feel Descent like. Some of the same sounds can help. maybe the old Descent 1 music, that sort of idea.

This is a prequel to the first Descent? So no burners, headlights, guidebots, etc? or another type of equipment similar to it?
Descent 3 is rather old in terms of graphics compared to this game. Not sure how it would work, but Doom 3 was quite a leap from the old DOOM.

I don't see why there'd be no burners or headlights.  Those have already been invented in real life and this is in the future.

But they weren't in D1, so chronologically speaking, it'd make sense to either exclude them, or limit their use. I don't know, depends on what Descendant wants to do. In the case of the afterburner and headlight, I'm indifferent, so it wouldn't really matter to me too much...though I kinda would like my only option for a light source being just flares again like in D1.

I wouldn't have my hopes too high for that, Vanguard. You have to keep in mind Descendant only has access to the Descent name, but not many of the other resources that had featured in Descent games, including the sounds, and especially the music. Though Descendant seems to be looking into the possibility of getting permission to use them, it's also highly likely they will end up unable to use them for legality reasons.

Best we ought to hope for is sounds/music that aren't quite the same...but in the same spirit as the originals. :)

I think you guys could at least do some recurring robot designs... even though it's a prequel, I seem to remember that the backstory for some of the robots like Old Scratch and Diamond Claw said that in-universe they were very old designs.

My understanding is that the robots are still being worked on, but if you look at the concept art for the Torch, I think there's a clear desire for people to look at some of the assets and immediately recognize the kinship.

That looks very Descent-ish to me... I could easily see that as a precursor to the Pyro.

Agree. Something to still give it some Descent feel.

*Sigh* I can't help it but I'm still feeling a bit worried.
There are just 4 days left on the Kickstarter campaign, and it still needs 38% to succeed!

I know there will be a final rush on the last 48 hours of the campaign, but I feel afraid that it may not fully reach the $600,000 goal.
Please any Descenter here, unite and spread the word as much as possible and let's make this happen! ;)

Together we can do this.  People have counted out Descent before- let's make sure they'll never dismiss Descent again!

If I had the money, I'd help some, but I am close to losing my job. My last day is the 10th. I may have another job lined up, but I am falling behind on bills as it is.

I wish you the best of luck. Nice to see Linux getting more attention, being that's all I have for an operating system/distro.

I haven't donated, but haven't because A: I probably wouldn't be able donate much more than, like, 5 bucks, given my present economical situations which wouldn't really make much of a difference in the grand scheme of things, I feel, and B: DU hasn't won me over enough to make me comfortable with donating money to it just yet, as there wouldn't be much point to it if it ends up being a game I'll never play. It's sort of a precaution sort of thing, reason B, and it doesn't help that, unlike most Americans, I'm quite stingy and sensible with my money.

But I do want it shown on the record that even though I started out being VERY skeptical with DU, you've been slowly winning me over, to the point that I'm now more cautiously optimistic. And that vid discussing singleplayer has notably helped with that, dunkelza, so thank you for sharing that. :)

I'm sorry guys, I've been there way too many times. :(

I hope things turn around for you soon!

Just in case someone here would decide to support the project, note that there's a Kickstarter referal contest going on and you can win an AMD 295X Video Card!  ;D

The campagin just entered into the most tense and stressful moment, it needs its final rush right now!  :o
Just 48 hours to go, be sure to pledge now if you really want to make this happen!

Also with the referal contest going out now, you still may have a chance to win the AMD 295X card!

Tell your friends, tell your family, tell your fiancée and even tell your dog or cat!
We need this to become a reality!   :D

a lot of it looks very nice indeed.

Maybe it's the age, maybe it's the different lifestyle, or whatever else, but I care more on if it's fun than a Descent feel. Both would be nice though, and maybe that will happen.

Nice promo I like how you used the design theme of the old promo for D3. I wonder, though, why did you use 'prepare for war' instead of 'Prepare For Descent'?

Not sure.  Maybe to stress the larger number of players in the biggest multiplayer options?

I saw the video at the same time as everyone else, so I don't know.

I had totally missed it, so I had to watch the trailer again. That's not a bad thing, right? :)

Though, in reference to an earlier comment, I do have to note with some dismay a great lack of death rolls in that trailer... :P

ADDENDUM: Just pledged $35 to the Kickstarter. Let's just say the new trailer won me over. :)

what happened to the amount? I'm new to this stuff. I saw it at $602,000 or so, and now it's only 600,000 something.

update: They did it. CONGRATS AGAIN!!!. I decided to pledge the cheapest amount, nothing to brag about. But I guess I can say I was part of it.

If you're referring to Sol Contingency, don't worry, we're coming through and we *do* have the Descent feel for sure. The flight mechanics feel identical, but we'll have a closed beta soon to dial everything in.
