Soupe Du Jour:

Blue screen of death?

Microsoft hasn't retired the blue screen of death we all knew so well... It's back, and it's got a new name: The black and blue fading screens of update hell. The first thing you notice... is you can't just turn your machine off and go to bed. You have to choose update and shut down or update and restart. The next morning, it starts off so innocently... "Hi" and then "We've got a few updates for you" But quickly it turns more sinister, "Do not turn off your computer" And you notice the lack of punctuation. "This may take a few minutes" A few minutes? I once let it run for over an hour with no end in sight. "This is taking longer than expected" All the while the screen goes from black to a fading blue. Is Microsoft teasing us with a reminder of the dreaded blue screen of death? I press the reset button. See? I didn't turn it off, I reset! Really, I promise! Finally, Microsoft relents, and I get my machine back. But I feel more like I'm borrowing it. From Microsoft.

xx Overload DLC release!

October 06, 2018, 05:57:45 PM by D2Disciple
I'm a few days late on this, so my apologies, everyone!  8)

As of September 28, 2018, the first community-contributed DLC for Overload is released to Steam for your itching trigger fingers to get a hold of! For the price of a typical grease-pit cheeseburger ($4.99), you get a nine-mission campaign and twelve new Challenge Mode levels to sink your teeth into. Plus, half the sales go to the contributing level authors, so you're directly supporting the Overload community by purchasing. How cool is that?

Get it on Steam here!

Plus, special shoutout to our very own Kaiaatzl for contributing two devious and well-designed levels to the campaign! Congrats, shut up, and take my money!  ;)

xx Forsaken Remastered Release!

July 31, 2018, 04:57:43 PM by D2Disciple
Now here's one I didn't expect to see anytime soon. ;) Forsaken, the faster, louder, and dumber Descent clone from 1998, has been re-released by Nightdive studios for modern PC systems with some re-mastered options such as FHD and 4K widescreen support, anti-aliasing, FOV adjustment, and other general quality-of-life updates to the game. More interestingly, though, is that it isn't just the original PC/Playstation version that got the updated release - no, this one incorporates the entirety of the completely-different Nintendo 64 version into the singleplayer campaign as well. This marks the first time (to my knowledge) that the N64 game gets some PC love, and means that this is going to be one seriously content-loaded singleplayer game. Oh, and there's working multiplayer too,  if that wasn't enough.  :)

Once maligned by many hardcore Descent fans, Forsaken is, in hindsight, a very fun, frantic, and occasionally immature 6DOF shooter that takes the Descent formula up to 11 and adds some of it's own gameplay twists as well. At 20 bucks, it's hard not to recommend, especially since you're getting the revamped and definitive version of what is essentially two combined games.

Get it on Steam: https://store.steampowered.com/app/668980/Forsaken_Remastered/

Get it on GOG: https://www.gog.com/game/forsaken

If anyone needs me, you know what I'll be doing after the kid goes to bed the rest of the week.  :P

xx Overload Release Date Announced!

April 23, 2018, 05:54:39 AM by D2Disciple
From the Overload team this morning:

"The good news is that Overload will launch on PC (Windows, Mac, Linux) on May 31 on Steam and GOG.com with full multiplayer support.

The not-so-good news: We are sorry to say that the Playstation 4 and Xbox One versions are being delayed by a couple more months."

It seems cross-platform multiplayer support is the reason for the delay of the console versions. However, as the Descent community is primarily a PC-gaming community (no offense to you Descent: Maximum fans  ;)), I'm sure there will be a great many Descent fans very excited that the fully-featured version will drop in little over a month. Personally, I'm already clearing my calendar.  :D

xx Sublevel Zero Redux Release!

July 13, 2017, 10:05:33 AM by D2Disciple
Sigtrap Games dropped PC 6DOF'ers a nice surprise today in the form of the release of Sublevel Zero Redux, an expanded version of their hit indie 6DOF shooter. It features a whole slew of new features, including new classes, new enemies, a remixed campaign, VR support, and more. In celebration of the release, they're listing the game for 35% off, and owners of vanilla Sublevel Zero will receive the updated version for free. From the Steam News announcement page:

Additionally, the original composer for the music of Sublevel Zero returns and has added new audio tracks to the Redux version.

I'm of the opinion that Sublevel Zero is the best 6DOF game since Descent (or Forsaken, if you were into that one too). It's a fun, very replayable corridor shooter, and the rogue-lite elements (procedural generation, perma-death, and crafting) are so unobtrusive and well-implemented that it adds to the charm of the game without bogging down the intense moment-to-moment action. At just under 10 bucks on sale today, there's no reason any Descent fan shouldn't pick it up.

Get it on Steam!

Get it on GOG!

Expect roncli to speedrun this before you've had a chance to read this post.  ;)
