Title: [News] D2X-XL Gameplay Video
Post by: karx-elf-erx on May 10, 2011, 04:21:27 AM
I have created a new D2X-XL gameplay video. You can find it on Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-X-Y41kVbBQ&feature=channel_video_title

Here's a brief comment about its making: http://forum.descent2.de/viewtopic.php?p=26066#p26066

Enjoy. :)

I tried to record some footage from TEW level 15 (Ben's checkerboard arena), but it didn't turn out too well. If you take a closer look you will notice that the video  almost exclusively features large areas of D2X-XL levels, showing off D2X-XL features. TEW just didn't fit that bill. I am looking forward to your D2X-XL level though. ;)

Posting a comment. :P

Seriously, though, it's pretty cool. Proves just how much I've been missing out on with D2X-XL as of late (I need to get that installed!). :D

Those terrains are awesome, almost identical at times to D3's terrain.

Wow, that Helix Cannon is superb. The tracer on the Vulcan Cannon looks a little strange though. I bet if it looked a little more 3-dimensional it'd be great.
What effect do you use for the Mega-Missile Impact? It looks like a lens-shader shockwave and an additive-blend sprite. - Very nice.

How is it that in D2X-XL we had Descent 3 Robots like the brown brutish one with the two fusion cannons?
Another great thing is how the enemies fragmented into identifiable bits, rather than just 'generic', glowing/smoking debris. How ever did you manage that?

The tracer is a 3D model (a very much stretched single super laser level 2 bolt). I wouldn't know how to make it more 3D. Real machine gun tracers are just light trails.

The mega missile impact (I guess you are referring to the blue shockwave) is a 2D texture effect the Open Freespace guys from Hard Light Productions have kindly allowed me to use (if I have enough time, I will beef up Open Freespace ...) The brief reddish explosion flash at the start of each explosion is a Descent 3 texture rendered as a billboard (i.e. always facing the viewer) and approaching the viewer while expanding (like an explosion wavefront).

You can add OOF and ASE custom models to D2X-XL levels (actually you can fully mod D2X-XL, providing new textures, AI, models, music ... anything else?)

Descent always used the robot submodels (parts) for debris. D2X-XL just exploits that (=> no submodels -> no debris).

That use of the multi-sectional enemies was pretty inspired. It's a long time since I did-in a large enemy in Descent 1/2.
Like I say, the vapour trails behind the Helix are awesome.  I can't work out why they omitted it from D3 in favour of the Microwave.
The drawing on all the different textures from D3 and places looks really good.

Perhaps a yellow or orange object would be better for the vulcan tracer. Whenever you glimpse bullets flying they have a warm, yellowish tint to them.
Maybe stretching it so long doesn't make the best sense because you're looking right along the barrel at it so you're effectively seeing it from behind.

Well, I think it's an amazing undertaking to go and adapt someone else's game, written in their language and make it so much better. That really is winning the battle on *their* own turf.

I posted another video on youtube (http://www.youtube.com/user/karx11erx?feature=mhee).

Reason: See the video comment. ;)

Machine gun tracers actually emit light.

Lol Karx you sound like Stephen Harper in the party leaders' debates.

Are these debates a US politics thing?

Well... this one was Canadian.
I'm not sure that the US does it but I think it's pretty likely.  I'm sure someone else here can answer that :P.

Stephen Harper is the leader of the Canadian Conservative party, and our current Prime Minister (personally I'm a liberal voter... but whatever).

Watched the Lunar Outpost Reloaded vid, pretty nice. I like all the little changes you've implemented, like borrowing the laser effects from D3 to implement in D2X-XL.

Though I do have a few questions, such as, why do the Class 1 drone's shots bounce? And can the 3D models for the hostages be turned on or off? 3D models for them do seem like the obvious thing to do, but I think I might actually prefer the old 2D models for now, just because they're more animated (even though they pretty much are just cardboard cutouts stood on end. I guess the real hostages were on a coffee break. :P).

Karx changed the class 1 drones' weapon to phoenix cannon in Reloaded.  If you're asking why he did it, I don't know but I suspect it had something to do with increasing the challenge (the original Lunar Outpost was pretty easy after all  ::)).

I'm seriously sick of the 'classic favourite mines' - Lunar Outpost and Ahayweh Gate (not so much PTMC Data Retention Center because it was bigger).  But I love LOR because it brings something new (and makes it longer, it's not just playing through the same way with better graphics).

What I'd really love is Pluto Outpost Reloaded -- because Pluto Outpost still is my favourite D1 level.

Lol.

There are a couple D1 levels I'd like to see "reloaded" myself, like level 8, the first of the Mars levels. I've played through that level so often, I know it like the back of my hand. :P

Somebody's just gotta take the time to build them, however.

You can turn the 3D hostages off. The class 1 drones have better guns because otherwise they'd be such a pathetic enemy. The level still isn't hard to beat.

It took several weeks to build LOR. I built it because that fabuluos remake of this level for the Unreal Engine (I think it was the 2003 engine) inspired me to it, and because it is "the" Descent level probably every Descent holds fond memories of, since it's the first level of the game most of them (us) will have seen. I will certainly not build another level with that detail after an original D1 or D2 level though.

Didn't think you would. I know it takes quite a bit of effort to build those high-quality D2X-XL levels.
