Rain Effect in D2X-XL
Title: Re: Let it Rain!

That looks really good! Thought I'm not really sure why you wouldn't just play D3 at that point... I thought everyone's major gripe about D3 was the terrain?

The complaint isn't that there is terrain, it's that it is not as well implemented as people seem to think it should be.  There aren't many, if any MP levels were the outdoor terrain is used effectively.

Grr...I need to get a computer that'll run D2X-XL well enough to actually see this effect like this...:P

Oh, there are more D2X-XL levels with outdoor areas, and some with very cool interiors:

In Yokelassence's mission Dimensional Intersect:

can we just call this Descent 2.5 now?

The D2X-XL icon on my desktop is called "Descent IV".

LOL!

Too much honor. If I'd ever create a Unreal 3 Engine based Descent, that might deserve such a name. :)

I say get on with it!

Those screenshots look fantastic. They're not far off Descent3 are they? That is some serious work when you're modifying something so old rather than creating from scratch.

Very nice, particularly the snow!

How many of you here know that D2X-XL supports real-time glow fx?

In response to that, I refer to my earlier post, and also tack on the sudden inexplicable need to download the newest version of DLE-XP so I can start messing around with some of these effects and put 'em to use. :D

I completely stole Yokelassance's texture scheme from "The Gorge" for my outdoor area (because I thought the gorge looked so cool).  I just realized how hard it is to tell them apart...
Actually, after reading Descent Equinox I thought that D2X-XL had a gameplay closer to the books than any of the (other) Descent games.  (In the book, the omega cannon shot lightning, the cloaking device worked kind of like D2X-XL's inventory, and all the robots were from D1, D2, and Vertigo).
I can't wait to get the Wolf ship.

Here are three pics from my most "Descent 3-ish" D2X-XL level (maybe it's actually more Half-Life-esque):

Pumo Mines looks D3ish.

Yeah, that's also part of my target on Pumo Mines project, as it's some kind of tribute to the 3 titles.
(if you see Level 2 of PM 3 Level demo is a mix of Descent 3 with some D1 elements on the caves and maze structure).

Pumo Mines are undoubtedly the most D3-ish D2X-XL levels around. :)

Well, I didn't say that my level is the most D3-ish D2X-XL level, just that it's my most D3-ish level. It probably is the most Half Life-esque Descent level around though. 8)

Is that good or bad?  I have never played Half Life.

Half-Life < Descent :)

Half-Life is one of the greatest games I have ever played. If you love 1st person shooters, HL ist must.

I played HL2 and (even though I got it for the source modding rather than the game itself), it was the most enjoyable FPS I've played apart from Descent.  I'm still stuck on the final area (boss?) though.  I can't figure out how to stop Dr Breen.

HL1 >> HL2. ;)

Did you google for the solution already? I don't remember how exactly I beat him, but I remember that it wasn't hard.

In fact I did, but I haven't got around to opening the game and trying it yet :P.

And I believe you about HL1 vs HL2, the original is almost always better than a sequel (as long as you don't care too much about graphics :P).
